3 introduction Prior to the launch of fusion technologies, the biggest issues in the processing of edges have always been associated with the use of conventional hot-melt glues. This traditional process requires unproductive heating-up time, excess glue in work pieces and processing units, additional storage of adhesive materials, changeover of the glue tank with every change of edging colour and a permanent optical imperfection: a visible glue joint that in certain circumstances can negatively influence the overall appearance especially in high-gloss boards. Zero-joint technology is the buzz phrase in the world of edgebanding at the moment. The technology is revolutionising the achievable optical quality of the edging. 5 Hot-air technology what is it? Hot-air technology is a welding process to apply edgebandings to boards in place of conventional hot-melt adhesive through the use of hot-air activation of a functional layer applied to the reverse of the edging. The functional layer, made of a special polymer is applied to the edging prior to processing, thus eliminating the need for any additional hot-melt glue application in the edgebander itself. 6 Hot-air technology how it works? Hot-air units use the very simple principle of compressed hot-air ( C) to perform the melting of the functional layer applied to the reverse of the edging. This activates the layer and bonds the edging to the panel fibers. This technique allows changes based on banding colours without any setup. 9 ProAir high performance airtec edging ProAir is an ABS edging with a special functional layer on the reverse of the edging. This layer consists of a special polymer that can only be activated using the hot-air technology. Because no hot-melt adhesive is used, it does not occur staining / discolouring of the joint. It enhances the adhesive properties and the overall resistance to eat, water, moisture and dirt while giving a very good optical zerojoint finish. 14 testing In close cooperation with the machine manufacturer Biesse, the ProAir edging was extensively tested over many months and optimised to be ready for the market. To further improve this product, Proadec purchased a Biesse AirTec edgebander in order to carry out internally all the testes needed to approve and test the quality ofproair. 16 ProAir high performance airtec edging application parameters ProAir was tested in close cooperation with Biesse and Schugoma. Application guidelines were produced for each case as the exact application parameters vary according to machine manufacturer. However, take into account when using ProAir edging that: In most cases in the market, a change in the edging width or thickness and/or a change to a different colour means the processing parameters also need to be changed. NOT WITH ProAir! This is only possible because the functional layer of ProAir is adjusted in production according to the edging specifications (colour, thickness) and therefore the key application parameters for each equipment do not need to change according to the thickness or colour of the edging.
