2 3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION These products contain rosin. Prolonged or repeated skin contact can cause an allergic reaction to develop. Inhalation of the fumes produced during reflow will irritate the respiratory system. Repeated or prolonged exposure to flux fumes may cause an allergic reaction leading to occupational asthma. Solder alloys containing lead give off negligible lead fume at normal soldering temperatures and at temperatures up to 500 C. Lead, if absorbed into the body of a pregnant woman, can cause developmental abnormalities in the nervous system of the foetus and breast feeding infants. 4. FIRST-AID MEASURES Inhalation Fumes emitted during reflow irritate the nose and throat and may cause an asthmatic type reaction. Remove affected person to fresh air. Obtain medical attention if there is any respiratory distress. Ingestion Will irritate the gastric tract. If the casualty is unconscious but breathing, place on one side in the recovery position. If breathing has stopped apply artificial respiration or give oxygen by mask. If the patient is conscious, then encourage the patient to rinse the mouth out several times with water. Do not induce vomiting or give anything to drink if the patient finds it difficult to swallow. Obtain urgent medical attention. Skin Contact Prolonged or repeated contact may produce irritation and skin rash. Wash hands with soap and warm water. If any skin irritation develops seek medical advice. Eye Contact Solder creams are irritating and abrasive. Flush immediately with plenty of water, ensuring that the eyeball and the inside of the eyelids are properly bathed by gently prising open the eyelids. Also make sure that the contaminated water runs off the face away from the eyes. Seek medical attention. 5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES Extinguishers Suitable - dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or foam. Unsuitable - water jet. Temperatures above 500 C may produce heavy metal dust, fumes and / or vapours. The flux will give rise to irritating fumes. Fire fighters should wear full protective clothing and breathing apparatus operated in positive pressure mode. 6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES Avoid contact with skin. Wear suitable protective clothing. Scrape up and place in a closed container for subsequent disposal. 7. HANDLING AND STORAGE The fumes produced during reflow should be extracted away from the breathing zone of the operators. Avoid inhaling flux fumes. Ensure that the general area is well ventilated. Wash hands with soap and water after handing solder cream, particularly before eating, drinking or smoking. These products should be stored in a cool, dry area. Keep out of reach of children and away from food and drink. 8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION In normal soldering operations where the temperature is below 500 C the exposure to lead will be minimal and the risks from the toxic effects of lead insignificant. From Appendix 1 of the Approved Code of Practice supporting the Control of Lead at Work Regulations Employees should be under medical surveillance if the risk assessment made under the Control of Lead at Work Regulations indicates they are likely to be exposed to significant concentrations of lead, or if an Employment Medical Advisor or appointed doctor so certifies. A woman employed on work which exposes her to lead should notify her employer as soon as possible if she becomes pregnant. The Employment Medical Advisor/Appointed Doctor should be informed of the pregnancy. Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, employers are required to assess the particular risks to health at work of pregnant workers and workers who have recently given birth or who are breast feeding. Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999, there is a requirement for personnel who are exposed to substances hazardous to health to be under appropriate health surveillance. Guidance on this can be found in the HSE publication Preventing Asthma at Work - How to Control Respiratory Sensitisers. Cases of occupational asthma arising from exposure to rosin fume are notifiable under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations Respiratory Protection: Not generally required unless there is inadequate control of solvent fumes. Eye Protection: Skin Protection: The use of safety glasses or goggles is recommended. PVC or rubber gloves. Suitable workwear should be worn to protect personal clothing. 9. 4 Materials to Avoid Solder will react with concentrated nitric acid to release toxic fumes of nitric oxide, which oxidises to nitrogen dioxide, a red gas with a pungent odour. If personnel are exposed to these gases then immediate medical attention should be sought, as symptoms can be delayed for a considerable time and can be fatal. Solder creams will react vigorously with strong oxidising agents. 11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION Acute Toxicity Oral: Ingestion may cause irritation of the gastric tract. LD 50 (oral, rat) Modified rosins >2500 mg/kg Propan-1,2-diol 1500 mg/kg Lead can cause weakness, pains in the joints, vomiting, loss of appetite and stupor. Inhalation: The paste contains low volatility components and does not present an inhalation hazard at ambient temperatures. The flux fumes produced during reflow will irritate the nose and throat. For personnel that have become sensitised to rosin fumes, further exposure can cause symptoms of asthma (attacks of wheezing, chest tightness and breathlessness), alveolitis (breathlessness, and flu-like symptoms), or rhinitis and conjunctivitis (runny or stuffy nose and watery or prickly eyes typical of hay fever.) Corrosivity/Irritation Skin: Eyes: The paste may produce mild irritation on contact with skin. Rosin can cause sensitisation by skin contact causing skin rash, weals and / or pustules to develop. Flux fumes produced during reflow contain resin acids which may irritate the mucous membranes and skin. The paste is abrasive and will produce irritation on contact with eyes. Sensitisation Inhalation of the flux fumes produced during reflow may cause respiratory sensitisation. The flux residues formed during reflow may contain resin acids which are skin sensitisers. Repeated-dose toxicity Inhalation: Oral: Mutagenicity: Prolonged or repeated exposure to rosin flux fume may cause some workers to develop occupational asthma. Cases of occupational asthma due to inhalation of rosin fumes produced from solder fluxes are reportable under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations Lead can cause weakness, insomnia, headache and possible paralysis. Chronic overexposure to lead may result in damage to the blood forming, nervous, urinary and reproductive systems. Lead is classified as a 2B carcinogen by the IARC (1987), i.e. evidence for carcinogenicity is adequate in animals but inadequate for humans. Severe lead toxicity has long been known to cause sterility, abortion and neonatal mortality and morbidity. There is no evidence of mutagenic effects. Carcinogenicity: There is no evidence of carcinogenic effects. 12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION Lead is not degradable and will persist in the environment. Lead is insoluble in water and is not attacked by most inorganic acids and bases. No data is available on the biodegradability of the resins in this product. It is considered likely that they will biodegrade in the long term Rosin and its derivatives vary in their acute toxicity to fish. Based on tests with similar materials, the rosin and modified rosins in these products should be regarded as toxic to fish. 13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS Issue No: 5 Number: HS RA10 Sn62 Page 4 of 6

5 Wherever possible unwanted solder creams should be recycled for recovery of metal. Otherwise disposal should be in accordance with local and national legislation.
