Carlye Meadows "MMR vaccine controversy." wikipedia. N.p., 17 Mar Web. 22 Mar When researching articles on the vaccine and autism topic a lot of useful articles were selected. I came upon an article that explains Wakefield s article on the Vaccine/ Autism issue and how it has a strong connection with the British medical journal, The Lancet. It also includes that after the Wakefield article was released in The Lancet vaccination dropped severely in the UK and Ireland causing tons of cases of mumps and measles that caused patient deaths. I think that this article was very useful and had a lot of information that helped me understand the vaccine/ autism case and The Lancet and how they tie in together. The only thing about this article is that it s from Wikipedia. All through school and was constantly told that Wikipedia was a bad source because more than half of the information on the site is incorrect. I think that this article shows them wrong. I found very valuable information that I will be looking at when I construct my paper. Reflect:
I found this article in Wikipedia and everything this article talks about has everything to do with what we are learning, and have already learned in class today. This article provided a break down part of this process that helped me understand the information a little better. Carlye Meadows Warber, Adrienne. "MMR Vaccine and Autism." LovetoKnow. N.p., Web. 23 Mar This article is focused on the parents of autistic children that are looking for answers on the panic of vaccinations causing autisms. This article lets parents and readers know that vaccinations are not causing the children to have autism. Vaccinations are made to help protect your children from deadly diseases, not to cause autism. Wakefield s conclusion of vaccinations cause autism was based on a handful amount of cases. The Danish Medical council provides a studied among 500,000 kids and have not found a case with connecting vaccinations to autism.
This article is not only useful to me trying to learn information on the vaccine/ autism issue but provides information and answers to parents that have concerns whether vaccinations really could have caused autism problems within their child. I feel that the reason why parents of autistic children believed within Wakefield s article is because there looking for a reason why there child became autistic, because humans are most likely to blame themselves for issues that could go wrong with their child. Wakefield s article made it possible for parents or guardians to potentially blame themselves. Reflect: This article made me stop and think why parents believe in Wakefield s article in the first place. It wasn t just because it was in the lancet, a well known medical journal, and therefore people believe it s true, but because autism could be caused by something they have done to their own child. Being a parent you tend to take full responsibly for how your children turn out in life. This article really opened up my options to the reason why parents believe in the vaccine/ autism controversy. Carlye Meadows
Williams, Mary E. "Jenny McCarthy's autism fight grows more misguided." Autism. N.p., 6 Jan Web. 23 Mar After looking up the affects of the vaccine/autism controversy made of the medical world I decided to search on articles that Jenny McCarthy was involved in. This article was about Jenny McCarthy s side of the topic. Jenny McCarthy has a child that has autism and she strongly believes that it was caused by the vaccines. To this day, Jenny McCarthy stands up for what she believes is and believes that the article that Andrew Wakefield wrote about vaccines verse autism is not fraudulent. This article was extremely helpful because it tells another side of the topic. This side is the parent s side of the issue. This helps me understand how parents could look at this article from the outside and almost believe everything that was said is true. People are always going to believe something if a celebrity strongly believes in it. Reflects: I will be able to use this article not only for my paper that is coming up but for papers in my future as we get closer to the end of the school year. This article is very similar to what we are learning in class because its explaining Jenny McCarthy s opinion and how people that look up to Jenny McCarthy might feel the same way.
Carlye Meadows Olmsted, Dan. "A Statement from Jenny McCarthy & Jim Carrey: Andrew Wakefield, Scientific Censorship, and Fourteen Monkeys." Age of Autism. N.p., 5 Feb Web. 28 Mar This is another article I found when looking up information on autism and vaccines that involved Jenny McCarthy and her boyfriend Jim Carey, both very well known celebrities. This article was about Wakefield s story on the fraudulent article that was displayed in The Lancet and was Shorty retracted. This article says that even though highly educated scientists thought that Wakefield s work was fraudulent since Jenny and Jim still believed in him, people still didn t know what person to believe. You would think that if you were a parent and you wanted to do what was best for your child you would believe in highly educated doctors that know what they re talking about over celebrities, unfortunately that is not the case. This article was very educational to me as a reader on the vaccine causing autism topic. Reflect: This article defiantly deals with what we are talking about in class, and I will be able to use this information in majority of writing within this course. The power that celebrities do have is very strong towards the public. Pretty much anything seen or done within the media becomes the newest trend. For a popular celebrity to be passionate about vaccines causing autism is a huge influence on the public.
