1 Divya Jyoti AADMD Student Resident Chapter Report of Activities April 2017 (issue 2/2017) The Divya Jyoti AADMD Student Resident Chapter witnessed an eventful month of April HANDING OVER CHARGE Madhvi Tandon 4 th year student of BDS takes over as the Chair, Divya Jyoti AADMD S/R Chapter from Tanvi Kalra. AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH was celebrated in the college over a period of one week. Members of the Chapter made a banner for advocacy towards inclusion and understanding of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Signature Campaign was carried out in the college. The members of the AADMD S/R Chapter along with members of CLUB UNIFY conducted a TALK SHOW. Faculty and students conducted participated in the event. The members role played as a psychologist, a pediatric dentist, public health personnel, an celebrity diagnosed with Autism, a parent of a child with Autism, dental students and general public to understand and educate the whole college and the patients present about what really is Autism, the probable etiologies,the sign and symptoms of a person with Autism. The pediatric dentist highlighted the methods to manage and treat a child with autism in the dental operatory. They spoke about the way a parent feels about the insensitivity exhibited by general public and highlighted the need to educate and understand that a person with autism is focused and is often outstanding and brilliant though may be non verbal and appear to have difficulty in communicating. They named scientists who had the autism challenge and yet contributed to science and society in an extraordinary manner.
2 YOUNG ATHLETE PROGRAM The AADMD student members of 1 st year of BDS and residents of 1 st year MDS conducted the Young Athlete Program with the help of resource team from Special Olympics Bharat, Sulekha Rana and Aroop Banerjee who had a dual role as Faculty adviser AADMD and the resource team.the members learnt and educated the parents and coaches on the role of Early Intervention to enhance learning and motor skills of children with intellectual disability below 7 years of age. It was a gratifying experience for all the participants.
3 YOUTH ACTIVATION PROGRAM 20 students of 1 st year BDS and 19 students of 1 st year MDS underwent Youth Activation Training to become empowered Leaders of Special Olympics. Resource person of Special Olympics Bharat, Aroop Banerjee, who is also the faculty adviser of the chapter, conducted the training. Previously trained youth leaders of the chapter facilitated the event.the new youth leaders are excited about the new roles they will play in society. They were trained in team work, communication, people first language, event organizing and fund raising besides the strategic new goal of Special Olympics and the dual role they will play as general advocated in society and oral health care professionals for people with ID/DD 2
