UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA DIVERSITY STATEMENT RECOMMENDED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA BY THE ACADEMIC SENATE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Adopted by the Assembly of the Academic Senate May 10, 2006 Endorsed by the President of the University of California June 30, 2006 Adopted as Amended by the Assembly of the Academic Senate April 22, 2009 Endorsed as Amended by the President of the University of California August 17, 2010 The diversity of the people of California has been the source of innovative ideas and creative accomplishments throughout the state s history into the present. Diversity a defining feature of California s past, present and future refers to the variety of personal experiences, values, and worldviews that arise from differences of culture and circumstance. Such differences include race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, language, abilities/disabilities, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, and geographic region, and more. Because the core mission of the University of California is to serve the interests of the State of California, it must seek to achieve diversity among its student bodies and among its employees. The State of California has a compelling interest in making sure that people from all backgrounds perceive that access to the University is possible for talented students, staff, and faculty from all groups. The knowledge that the University of California is open to qualified students from all groups, and thus serves all parts of the community equitably, helps sustain the social fabric of the State. Diversity should also be integral to the University s achievement of excellence. Diversity can enhance the ability of the University to accomplish its academic mission. Diversity aims to broaden and deepen both the educational experience and the scholarly environment, as students and faculty learn to interact effectively with each other, preparing them to participate in an increasingly complex and pluralistic society. Ideas, and practices based on those ideas, can be made richer by the process of being born and nurtured in a diverse community. The pluralistic university can model a process of proposing and testing ideas through respectful, civil communication. Educational excellence that truly incorporates diversity thus can promote mutual respect and make possible the full, effective use of the talents and abilities of all to foster innovation and train future leadership. Therefore, the University of California renews its commitment to the full realization of its historic promise to recognize and nurture merit, talent, and achievement by supporting diversity and equal opportunity in its education, services, and administration, as well as research and creative activity. The University particularly acknowledges the acute need to remove barriers to the recruitment, retention, and advancement of talented students, faculty, and staff from historically excluded populations who are currently underrepresented.
UCLA Principles of Community The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is an institution that is firmly rooted in its land-grant mission of teaching, research, and public service. The campus community is committed to discovery and innovation, creative and collaborative achievements, debate and critical inquiry, in an open and inclusive environment that nurtures the growth and development of all faculty, students, administration and staff. These Principles of Community are vital for ensuring a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of the campus community and for serving as a guide for our personal and collective behavior. We believe that diversity is critical to maintaining excellence in all of our endeavors. We seek to foster open-mindedness, understanding, compassion and inclusiveness among individuals and groups. We are committed to ensuring freedom of expression and dialogue, in a respectful and civil manner, on the spectrum of views held by our varied and diverse campus communities. We value differences as well as commonalities and promote respect in personal interactions. We affirm our responsibility for creating and fostering a respectful, cooperative, equitable and civil campus environment for our diverse campus communities. We strive to build a community of learning and fairness marked by mutual respect. We do not tolerate acts of discrimination, harassment, profiling or other conduct causing harm to individuals on the basis of expression of race, color, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, religious beliefs, political preference, sexual orientation, gender identity, citizenship, or national origin among other personal characteristics. Such conduct violates UCLA s Principles of Community and may result in imposition of sanctions according to campus policies governing the conduct of students, staff and faculty. We acknowledge that modern societies carry historical and divisive biases based on race, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, and religion, and we seek to promote awareness and understanding through education and research and to mediate and resolve conflicts that arise from these biases in our communities. The Principles of Community statement was developed by the Chancellor s Advisory Group on Diversity, since renamed the UCLA Council on Diversity & Inclusion, which is comprised of representatives from administration, faculty, staff, students and alumni. For more information, or to download copies of the statement, please see
DAVID GEFFEN SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AT UCLA Diversity and Inclusion: We, the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, aim for excellence in all tenets of healthcare, including education, research, community engagement, and clinical care. We believe that the core values of diversity and inclusion are inseparable from our institutional goal. DGSOM leadership is committed to fostering an environment that celebrates the unique backgrounds, contributions, and opinions of each individual. Through fair and deliberate recruitment, hiring practices, promotions, admissions, and education, DGSOM will draw its talent from across the community and provide the highest quality of service to everyone we encounter. We believe in a system that supports outstanding faculty, fellows, residents, staff, and students with different perspectives and experiences. By a process of continual reevaluation, reflection, and shared responsibility, we are unwavering in our dedication to equality, communication, and respect. In addition to our mission regarding faculty, we are committed to celebrating and encouraging the diversity of students, trainees, and staff at the David Geffen School of Medicine. Diversity celebrates the richness of our individual differences whether they are based on gender, race, ethnicity, age, socioeconomic status, language, religion, or abilities. Excellence is achieved through the diversity of thought and opinion that helps eradicate barriers for success, expands research goals, and improves patient care. The David Geffen School of Medicine Diversity Affairs Office was established in July Its mission is to foster institutional awareness and commitment toward gender equity and equal opportunity for all and to recruit and retain a diverse faculty. The Office of Diversity Affairs, through partnerships with Education, Faculty Affairs, Research, Community Engagement, and the UCLA Health System, strives to create a broad and inclusive environment for the community of faculty, staff, trainees, and patients. We work closely with the campus Vice Provost for Faculty Diversity and Development to ensure that the DGSOM faculty employment policies and practices comply with all relevant Federal, State, and University requirements for equal opportunity, non-discrimination, and affirmative action. Together with the DGSOM department chairs, we are working to enhance recruitment and retention efforts to advance excellence through diversity. In 2013 we announced the creation of a Strategic Plan for Faculty Diversity for the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. This plan was initiated using data generated from the 2011 Faculty Forward survey and realized through the hard work of a diversity task force and strategic planning committee. The dedication and creativity of numerous contributors to this plan are greatly appreciated. The plan is available on the DGSOM Diversity Website. We welcome broad participation and new ideas to enhance the climate at UCLA. Please contact us with your thoughts, suggestions, and availability to work together with us in the future. diversity@mednet.ucla.edu
INTRODUCTION The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA (DGSOM) Diversity Statistics Monograph is published annually. The 2015 monograph presents the diversity profile of the DGSOM faculty, based on data from January 12, All faculty members in five academic series are reported; three carry Academic Senate membership (Regular, In-Residence, and Clinical X series), and two do not (Adjunct and Health Sciences Clinical series). All of these series are academic titles that require periodic review by the Council of Academic Personnel (CAP) for advancement, but only faculty members in the Regular series are eligible for tenure. The breakdown with respect to faculty location at the Westwood campus or affiliated sites is included. The monograph also provides an estimate of national availability of faculty and trainees in departments for which these data are available. The faculty data were taken from the faculty data book of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Percentages of senior faculty (associate and full professor) and junior faculty (assistant professor), as well as details of gender and race/ethnicity, are provided. UCLA departmental assignments are not always concordant with the AAMC designations; where necessary, some data were combined for specific departments, and data for other departments that were not available from the AAMC are absent from the summary pages. When available, additional data are provided regarding current ACGME trainees for individual departments (Brotherton SE, Etzel SI. Graduate Medical Education, JAMA. 2015;314(22): doi: /jama ) The data presented here, as well as prior faculty demographic data, are posted on the DGSOM diversity website at We hope you find this monograph a useful resource in assessing the ethnic and gender composition of the academic units and of the campus. Other aspects of diversity, such as family or veteran status, sexual orientation, and disability are not included in these statistics, but resources related to all aspects of diversity may be found at the above website and at Lynn K. Gordon, MD, PhD Senior Associate Dean, Diversity Affair Jonathan R. Hiatt, MD Vice Dean for Faculty

Distribution of U.S. Medical School Faculty by Sex, Race/Ethnicity, Rank and Department *Note from AAMC: As part of an AAMC-wide initiative to standardize the collection of race and ethnicity information, the Faculty Roster has updated the way it collects and reports race and ethnicity information. As a result, starting in 2014, the U.S. Medical School Faculty (USMSF) report displays different race/ethnicity categories than were reported in previous years. *Due to limitations of the data, we will no longer provide counts of faculty by specialty. As a result, table 17 (Distribution of Full-time Faculty by Sex, Degree, Race/Ethnicity, and Specialty) is no longer available. This report provided data for the following departments in the past: Neurosurgery Radiation Oncology Urology No faculty availability data was found for the following departments: Biomathematics Human Genetics Neurobiology Neurosurgery Radiation Oncology Urology ACGME availability data source: Brotherton SE, Etzel SI.
