3 1. Preface The position of diagnostic neuropathology as a specialty is distinguished by the fact that it recruits from postgraduate trainees and possibly from other specialties. In general, veterinarians do not get exposed to in-depth diagnostic neuropathology during core training or general surgical training. They discover diagnostic neuropathology as a career option when they delve into histopathology training or start training in neurology/neurosurgery. Trainees in neurology and neurosurgery encounter neuropathologists in practice within the context of a multidisciplinary clinical neuroscience service. Training in diagnostic neuropathology should be regarded as higher specialty training. Whatever the provenance of those who register for this course may be, the registered students will needs two sets of knowledge/skills to enjoy and excel in this course: either basic histopathology or basic clinical neuroscience. 2. Objectives We welcome you to the graduate level Veterinary Neuropathology course that is designed to equip you with terminology, basic concepts of pathologic processes in both of the central and peripheral nervous system and enable you to be familiar with morphology of neurologic diseases at the gross, histologic and ultrastructural levels. Specific goals: - Understand the basic pathologic processes (general pathology). - Understand the pathologic processes particular to diseases of the nervous system such as Wallerian degeneration and regeneration, trans-synaptic degeneration, de-myelination, infections of the nervous system and neoplasia. - Learn to recognize and interpret evidence of gross and microscopic disease of the nervous system. - Acquire an understanding of the causes and mechanisms of these pathologic alterations. - Correlate clinical manifestations, imaging findings and pathological lesions related to the nervous diseases. - Pass the pathology part of your Neuro Board certifying examination We, in collaboration with the neurologists and neurology trainees, shall try to emphasize entities of interest in veterinary literature during lectures, small groups and image review

4 sessions, but prototypes of rare diseases will also be presented to provide an overview and perspective should you encounter such rare entities in your practice. The main purpose of the lectures is to present conceptual, nosological and pathogenectic aspects of neural diseases. Additionally, we will try to illustrate the application of neuropathologic principles in problem solving and analysis of clinical settings, which should help both neurology and pathology residents. We have included a lecture of neuroimaging since this area is currently expanding at a fast pace and a basic appreciation of techniques and value and/or limitations of those techniques will assist pathologists and neurologists equally. The course syllabus will be used in lieu of textbooks, but at the end of each chapter a list of literature will be provided for those of you who wish to cover material in more detail. Images for the small group sessions will be available online at the following website: A large number of additional websites covering mainly veterinary neuropathology and human neuropathology as well are available to enhance your learning. npatlas Examinations: Classical gross lesions, histopathology alterations and clinical cases (with established diagnoses) will be used for short quizzes during the course and final examination. Ancillary tests including immunohistochemistry or molecular testing will be emphasized when appropriate Final grades will be based on examinations.
