(Section 7) amarens@iastate.edu Office Location and Hour: Forker 0164N and Monday 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or by appointment Lab Instructors: Jeni Langsing (Sections 1) jenil@iastate.edu Jessica Velthoff (Section 2) - jessvelt@iastate.edu Allison Hedges, (Sections 3 & 6) - aahedges@iastate.edu Jenna Burnett (Section 4 & 5) - jburnet@iastate.edu Course Description: Kinesiology 258 Physical Fitness and Conditioning is a hybrid course where one component (i.e. lecture) is delivered online while the other portions of the course are conducted face-to-face (i.e., lab). This course will provide you with an introductory background of the five components of fitness: cardiorespiratory, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition. You will be exposed to various exercise modalities and training techniques. In addition, you will develop the skills to assess each component of fitness and will practice constructing cardiovascular, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility programs based on the fitness assessment. The course serves as an introduction to the role of exercise in health promotion, fitness, and performance including the acute and chronic responses to exercise. KIN 258 Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course you will be able to complete the following: 1. Cardiorespiratory Fitness: Demonstrate understanding of the cardiovascular responses to aerobic exercise; assess an individual s cardiorespiratory fitness level; and develop a cardiovascular prescription for the initial, improvement and maintenance phase. 2. Muscular Strength and Endurance: Demonstrate understanding of the skeletal muscle responses to resistance training; assess an individual s muscular strength and muscular endurance levels; and develop a resistance training prescription for the starter, slow progression 1 & 2 and maintenance phase. 3. Flexibility: Demonstrate different types of stretching exercises; assess an individual s flexibility; develop a flexibility program to enhance flexibility. 4. Body Composition: Identify health issues excess body fatness; assess an individual s body composition. 5. Fitness Assessment: Evaluate a fitness assessment that includes the five components of fitness; interpret the testing results; develop exercise prescriptions to enhance components of fitness. Learning Outcomes will be assessed through quizzes, exams, in class activities and assignments. Department of Kinesiology Learning Outcomes: 1. Communication. Uses clear and effective written, oral, visual, and electronic (WOVE) communication techniques to foster inquiry, collaboration, and engagement in physical activity and health related settings. (Objectives 1, 2 & 5) 2. Lifelong learning, assessment, and self-reflection. Analyzes and evaluates one's own knowledge, abilities and actions relative to professional standards, seeks opportunities to grow professionally, and utilizes self-assessment and assessment of others to foster physical, cognitive, social, and emotional well-being. (Objectives 1-5)

2 3. Content knowledge, discovery, and critical thinking. Understands fundamental concepts of physical activity and health, conducts scientific inquiry, and applies critical thinking to solve problems from personal, scholarly, and professional perspectives. (Objective 5) 4. Ethics, diversity, and social justice. Demonstrates leadership and social responsibility to improve quality of life for others and ensures equitable access for diverse groups by creating appropriate environments to initiate and maintain a physically active, healthy lifestyle. (Team Format) Required Textbook: Customized Text: Health, Kinesiology and Nutrition Kinesiology 258: Physical Fitness and Conditioning Hybrid Course Format: Online Portion: The focus of the online component is to build your knowledge of the content area and to enhance your learning to successfully complete quizzes, exams, and lab assignments. Weekly lectures and reading assignments will be posted in BB Learn one week in advance every Monday at 11:59 p.m. in the weekly folders. To enhance your success, weekly checklist and reading/video outlines will be provided. Lab Portion: Lab sessions will give you an opportunity to actively demonstrate concepts learned, perform exercise testing, analyze assessments, and accumulate data to complete lab assignments. Lab sessions will meet face-to-face every Tuesday and Thursday. You are expected to have watched the assigned videos, read through the assigned readings, and completed the weekly quizzes prior to coming to lab. Lab assignments and activities will be posted in the weekly checklist and is located in the course outline at the end of the syllabus. Lab Meeting Location: The majority of labs will be located in the Exercise Clinic, 194 Forker. Lab Sections and Times: All labs will meet Tuesday and Thursday at their respective times. Section 1: 9:00 a.m. 9:50 a.m. Section 2: 10:00 a.m. 10:50 a.m. Section 3: 11:00 a.m. 11:50 a.m. Section 4: 12:10 p.m. 1:00 p.m. Section 5: 1:10 p.m. 2:00 p.m. Section 6: 2:10 a.m. 3:00 p.m. Section 7: 8:00 a.m. 8:50 a.m. Grading Criteria: To pass this course, you must participate in and complete all of the evaluated work including: exams, quizzes, and lab assignments. 3 Grading Scale: A (100-93%) C ( %) A- ( %) C- ( %) B+ ( %) D+ ( %) B ( %) D (67-66%) B- ( %) F (<66%) C+ ( %) Grade Evaluation: Exams: All Exams will be administered in the Testing Center. There are two locations for the Testing Center: 60 Carver Hall and 2552 Gilman. All exams will be available Monday through Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. of the exam week. **FINAL EXAM WILL BE AVAILABLE THROUGH THRUSDAY. You are required to be at the testing center not later than 7:20 p.m. and you must bring your student ID. There are no make-ups for missed exams. Quizzes: Quizzes will open on Mondays at 11:59 p.m. and close the following Monday at 11:59 p.m. However, quizzes will not be made available until you watch the entire video for that week. Quizzes will cover material from online lectures, book chapters, and articles. To ensure that you perform satisfactorily on all quizzes, be sure to read all assigned materials thoroughly and watch all assigned videos. You will two opportunities to take the online quizzes and the average score will be kept. It is assumed you are not using notes or outside resources to take the quiz. There are NO make-ups for online quizzes. Lab Assignments: You are expected to bring all lab materials to class and turn in assignments as instructed. Failure to bring lab assignments to class will result in a zero for that assignment; only lab papers from BB or in the book will be accepted. Late Work Policy: Most assignments will be completed and turned in at the end of lab. If you fail to bring your lab materials and do not turn in your assignment at the end of the class period, you will receive a zero for the lab assignment. LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Grading Turnaround Times: You should expect to receive feedback for all assessments within 1 week. Your lab instructor will post any possible grade delays in the Announcements link on BB Learn. If you want to contest a grade for any assignment, quiz, or exam you have one week following the date the grade was posted. Attendance Policy: Attendance is required for this course as you will be completing daily assignments. If you are not present, lab assignments and quizzes cannot be made up. In addition, you are expected to come to class dressed to perform various physical activities (e.g., t-shirt, shorts or sweatpants, and tennis shoes). If you are not properly dressed, you may be asked to leave. In addition, if you are no participating in the lab activities, you may be asked to leave. If you have a University excused absences or you (athletes, band members, athletic trainers, etc.) participate in University affiliated activities, you will be allowed to make up missed labs if the following occur: Student will receive a notice of absence from athletics, student health, etc.

4 The lab instructor should receive notification from Coach or facilitator of event via or paper verifying participation in event. If you miss a skills lab, you must make up the lab a week prior to or after the missed lab. The make-up for all other misses will be determined by the TA (e.g., attending group fitness classes, writing article review, etc.) and will be in line with the amount of points missed. Device Policy: For most lab classes, you will not need to use technological devices such as computer, ipod, tablet or cell phone. You will be expected to put these devices away during class time as they are a distraction to the learning environment. If you choose to disrupt the learning environment, you will be asked to leave. If a lab class requires devices, you will be informed prior to class. Accommodations for Students with Disabilities: Iowa State University is committed to assuring that all educational activities are free from discrimination and harassment based on disability status. All students requesting accommodations are required to meet with staff in Student Disability Resources (SDR) to establish eligibility. A Student Academic Accommodation Request (SAAR) form will be provided to eligible students. The provision of reasonable accommodations in this course will be arranged after timely delivery of the SAAR form to the instructor. Students are encouraged to deliver completed SAAR forms as early in the semester as possible. SDR, a unit in the Dean of Students Office, is located in room 1076, Student Services Building or online at Contact SDR by at disabilityresources@iastate.edu or by phone at for additional information. Academic Honesty: The Iowa State University Policy on Academic Policy will be followed. The consequences of academic dishonesty are the following: The student will receive a zero on the test or assignment involved. The instructor is required to inform the dean of students for further action. If the student admits guilt, the instructor shall inform the student (a) of the grade on the work in which the dishonesty occurred, and (b) how this incident will affect subsequent evaluation and the final grade. The instructor must report the incident in writing to the dean of students. The dean of students will meet with the student and, depending on the severity of the offense as well as on the student s past conduct record, may schedule a hearing before the All-University Judiciary Committee. This hearing is to determine the disciplinary action to be taken. If the student claims to be innocent of the charge, the instructor shall consult with his or her department chair and report the incident in writing to the dean of students. The latter will schedule a hearing before the All-University Judiciary Committee.
