NOTE: I will be posting handouts for the duration of the 1st week on my personal ELAC webpage: III. IV. Instructor Information Instructor: Dr. Le ElacAnatomy@yahoo.com *I check my between 9-11pm, from Monday to Thursday, during the entirety of the 5 weeks Course Description: This course is the study of the structure of the human body. This course provides the basic knowledge and lab skills to meet the needs of pre-nursing, physical education, physical therapy, and allied health majors. Dissection of the cat is required. 1 P a g e
2 V. Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Describe the structure, function and location of the four basic tissues. 2. Identify individual human organs and classify each structure into its correct organ system. 3. Relate the gross and microscopic anatomy of organs to the general function of the organ and organ system. 4. Appraise the complexity of the human body by linking the functions of organ systems to the organism as a whole. 5. Compare and contrast the relationship of the human organs and structures with a dissected cat, using proper anatomical terminology. 6. Demonstrate the skill to dissect accurately and neatly. 7. Assess the relationships of tissues, organs, and systems in the dissected cat. 8. Apply the knowledge gained of the human body to everyday life and personal health. VI. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Differentiate basic anatomical terminology and directional planes of the human body. 2. Analyze the organizational levels of the human body. 3. Examine the basic anatomical and functional principles of each major organ system. 4. Compare and contrast the histological components of the major organ systems in the human body. VII. Books & Materials: Required Textbook Human Anatomy, 6/E Authors: E. Marieb, P. Wilhelm & J. Mallatt Publisher: Pearson Required Materials Scantrons #882-E I.D. (required for exams) Rubber gloves Dissection kit (1 kit per group) Cat specimen (price: $80/whole cat) - can be purchased from ELAC bookstore Optional Lab Manual Anatomy 001 Laboratory Manual Optional Atlas Brief Atlas of the Human Body Authors: E. 3 VIII. Grading Criteria: The total points earned from all scheduled activities will determine each student's final grade for the course. Lecture Lab Exam 1 (100 points) Exam 1 (100 points) Exam 2 (100) Exam 2 (100) Exam 3 (100) Exam 3 (100) Exam 4 (100) Exam 4 (100) Exam 5(100) 8 Lab Quizzes (48 points) 6 pts each Lecture subtotal (500) Homework (46 points) - 2 pts per chapter Cat dissection participation (6) Lab subtotal (500) Total (1,000) NOTE: When an exam is returned, it is the responsibility of the students to review their scantron before returning it to the instructor on the same day. If no review is requested during this time the score becomes finalized. A final letter grade will be assigned according to the points earned and will not be adjusted either up or down. In other words, if your total number of points earns you a C this is the grade you will receive. You will not be given either a higher or lower grade. B's as well as D's will have to be earned. Again, grades will not be modified in either direction by a student's request. The grading scale is as follows: A 89.5% - 100% B 79.5% % C 69.5% % D 59.5% % F less than 59.5% Lecture exams The material to be tested will come primarily from the lecture notes, although all topics from the review guide will be a FAIR game for the exams. The format of the lecture exams are: multiple choice, matching, diagram labeling, short answer questions, and POSSIBLE essay questions. THERE ARE NO UNEXCUSED MAKE-UPS! Lab exams The format of the lab exam is fill-in-the blank and spelling counts!!! You will be rotating from one station to the next. You will have 1 min and 30 seconds per station to write down your answers. Due to the nature of the setup of the lab exam, THERE ARE NO MAKEUP LAB EXAMS, NO EXCEPTIONS! Also, student will not be allowed to enter the classroom while the lab exam is in progress, so DON T be late. Daily laboratory quizzes These quizzes will cover laboratory handout(s) from previous lab. The quizzes will be conducted at the beginning of each lab. THERE ARE NO UNEXCUSED MAKE-UPS! 3 P a g e
