A national and international speaker and trainer, her expertise includes advancing educational equity, leading across differences and striving for inclusive excellence. Clients included Teach for America, Metropolitan State College, Case Western Reserve University, University of Maryland, National Alliance for Hispanic Health, Denver Public Schools, Aurora Public Schools, Family Star Montessori, The Community Foundation serving Boulder, and the W. MAYOR S OFFICE FOR EDUCATION AND CHILDREN Denver, Colorado Executive Director Focusing on the first two decades of life, the charge of the office was to champion educational advancement for children and youth in Denver. Responsibilities included annual budget management of $14 million, cabinet member and educational advisor to Mayor Hickenlooper, oversight of federal Head Start grant, oversight of Denver Preschool Program, the Office of Child Care Initiatives, the Office of Youth Development, Office of School Programs, Invest in Success Initiative and five Mayoral boards and commissions. Major accomplishments during Guajardo s tenure include: Chair of the Democratic National Convention s Education Committee (2008) developing national civic engagement initiative, America: Live and In Person. City-wide summits convening over 1,000 stakeholders: Mayor s Early Childhood and Education Summit; Mayor s Summit on Latino Academic Achievement; Multiple Pathways to Graduation Summit(s), recognized as national models for Mayoral leadership in education. Championed the Mayor s Leadership Team, to advance quality preschool in Denver, leading to a ten year ballot initiative that provided over $100 million for the Denver Preschool Program. Launched innovative partnership in after-school programming, Lights on After School, that allocated $1.8 million in funding annually to Denver Public Schools, impacting over 15,000 school age children annually. This partnership was featured nationally as a best practice by the National League of Cities (NLC). 3 positive youth development, and setting a national standard for innovation, best practices, and leadership in community mobilization, and evaluation. LATIN AMERICAN RESEARCH AND SERVICE AGENCY (LARASA) Denver, CO Executive Director LARASA is a non-profit organization that targets public policy research and evaluation to increase knowledge and awareness of the issues facing Latino children and families. Under Guajardo's leadership, staff size and budget increased three-fold. During her tenure LARASA became a national Latino Policy Center was fiscally responsible for serving 250,000 individuals in Colorado. COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION (CDE) Denver, CO Dropout Prevention Coordinator Provided leadership, training, coordination and technical assistance to school districts and national agencies in developing and strengthening programs for working with youth; assisted school districts in conducting evaluation of model programs for working with students; identified, developed, and funded effective dropout prevention components; served as liaison from CDE to state agencies, community organizations and advisory councils that work with children and youth.
