The TRB Technical Activities Division provides a forum for transportation professionals to identify research needs and to share information on research and issues of interest. The Technical Activities Division is the home of the TRB Standing Committees and the TRB Annual Meeting. 11
12
The foundation of the Technical Activities Division is the standing committee. We currently have over 200 standing committees, each focused on a specific transportation issue. Technical Activities Council Group Group Group Section Section Section Committee Committee Committee Committee Committee Committee Committee 13
Each committee has a title and a committee code. Members are encouraged to avoid using the codes too frequently. We do not want to discourage new members or participation by making the committees seem like a secretive community. However, you will hear the codes used and the illustration below will help you decode the code. A D A 10 Division Technical Activities Division is A Group Section Committee number 14
The committees within the Technical Activities Division are the basis for communities. Friendship and connections are formed that often last for an entire professional career. The people you meet while working with a committee are a resource to rely on as you navigate your professional career and the challenges that it brings. Our standing committees do not conduct or guide research. 15
25 member slots Membership is rotated every 3 years To encourage diversity additional members are permitted in two categories Four additional young members (35 years of age or younger) Five additional international members Each committee has a friends list and the people on that list play a critical role in all of the committee activities. The friends list is a source of new members during rotation. 16
Identify research needs Encourage needed research Sponsor sessions, conferences, and/or meetings Develop technical material to advance the profession Disseminate information 17
