3 FY16 PRCRP Military Relevance Focus Areas Identification of militarily relevant risk factors associated with cancer (e.g., ionizing radiation, chemicals, infectious agents, and environmental carcinogens) Unmet gaps in cancer care spectrum (prevention, early detection, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and/or survivorship) that impact the health and well-being of Service Members, Veterans, and their beneficiaries Applications that address exposures, conditions, or circumstances that are unique to the military, or disproportionately represented in a military beneficiary population, are the highest priority. 12

4 FY16 PRCRP Funding Opportunities Pre-application due 8 June 2016 at 5 pm ET To be released in July 2016 Idea Award with Special Focus Translational Team Science Award Career Development Award Horizon Award All researchers with faculty level appointment eligible Supports innovative, high-risk/high gain research Emphasis on innovation Special Focus on military relevance Preliminary data discouraged Direct costs - $400k over 2 yrs Assistant Professor or above eligible 2-3 PIs partner Supports correlative studies associated with an ongoing, completed trial Emphasis on military relevance Preliminary data required Direct costs - $1M amongst the partners over 3 yrs Independent investigator within 10 years of terminal degree Designated mentor at level of Associate professor Supports impactful research Encouraged to focus on military relevance Preliminary data not required Direct costs - $360k over 3 yrs. Pre-doctoral & Postdoctoral investigators eligible Supports junior level scientists Supports impactful research Encouraged to focus on military relevance Emphasis on discovery Preliminary data not required Direct costs - $150k over 2 yrs Clinical trials are not allowed 13

5 Strategies for Success Propose solutions to important problems: IMPACT Identify gap(s) that will be filled: INNOVATION Align the proposed work with guidance from the Announcement: RELEVANCE Justify a technically sound plan with clear approaches for contingencies: FEASIBILITY Include evidence of appropriate EXPERTISE (collaboration, consultants, etc.) Ensure the study is APPROPRIATELY POWERED for the proposed research outcome Explain the proposed work with CLARITY and UNBURDENED by jargon Demonstrate AVAILABILITY and ACCESS to critical resources, reagents, and/or subject populations Respect the different audiences of the technical and lay abstracts and COMMUNICATE effectively Don t break the rules for deadlines or requirements BE COMPLIANT 17

6 Pitfalls to Avoid in Application Submission Do not include Programmatic Panel members for the program and fiscal year to which you are applying Do not exceed the page limits; check files after creating PDF version Do not miss the submission deadline Grants.gov validation may take up to 72 hours System-to-system submissions are sometimes problematic Application verification in ebrap is possible before the deadline Submit the correct Project Narrative and Budget these components cannot be modified during the verification period in ebrap 18
