2 NER TITLE Next to tradition, business is the heart and soul of South arolina. ommerce helps drive our state, and by embracing changes in health care and adopting new technologies, we can make South arolina s workforce one of the most attractive and productive in the nation. The purpose of the South arolina usiness oalition on Health is to serve as a partnership for businesses, organizations and individuals in S.. and inside the healthcare field to act collaboratively in creating sustainable initiatives to improve healthcare quality and efficiency, promoting greater consumer responsibility in healthcare decisions, improving the overall health of South arolinians and thereby improving our economic competitiveness and quality of life. One approach that SH utilizes to achieve our mission of improving healthcare is to serve as a collaborative partner with other entities in S that share our passion for health improvement. Exemplifying our work as a community partner, SH has been an active partner in the statewide cancer prevention program, which is our featured topic for the 2016 Hospital Quality Guide. dditionally, this year s guide highlights various tips to help our citizens maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to help prevent cancer. TLE OF ONTENTS Fast Facts Nutrition Physical ctivity Relaxation and Meditation Routin Medical are Tests and heckups Understanding olorectal ancer Hello, my name is Lisa, and I have stage 3 Ovarian ancer. I can speak from experience on how cancer effects one s family, work, and most importantly, how it affects you. My journey with cancer began on pril 27th When I was diagnosed I quickly realized that this personal battle would take an entire army to fight. With my family and friends by my side I fought as hard as I could, but I realized that I needed to make changes. I needed to eat healthier, work out more, and make choices about how I wanted to fight this disease. I started at the South arolina usiness oalition on Health over six years ago, with the hope of making a change in the way our State handles health, and assisting families, employers, and employees secure the best possible health care benefits wareness olors Hospital Scores Stivarga Information Meet Lisa I am working my hardest to help employers provide employees with the best ammunition to provide these benefits, which are not free and come at a huge cost. ut it s up to those of us fighting to take a look at how we can improve our health. It s up to us to ask ourselves if we re ready to take on an unexpected health issues, and are we taking the steps to avoid future health problems? SH is working hard with businesses, health providers and many other partners to improve health care for everyone in our beautiful State of South arolina. Please encourage your hospital to participate in Leapfrog, and ask your company to join us in the fight for change.
3 FST FTS DID YOU KNOW? One-third of all cancer deaths in the United States each year are linked to diet and physical activity? ancer is the second leading cause of death in South arolina. One out of two men and one out of three women will develop cancer in their lifetime. There are more than 15.5 million cancer survivors alive today in the United States. It is estimated that by 2026 the population of cancer survivors will increase to 20.3 million. NUTRITION While hereditary and other environmental factors, such as tobacco and alcohol, play a large role in the development of cancer, maintaining a healthy weight and diet can lower your risk of developing cancer. The combination and interaction of certain minerals, vitamins and phytochemicals in food can help fight cancer. Healthy food, like pples, lueberries, roccoli, herries, offee, Flax seeds, Grapefruit, Legumes, Soy, Squash (maybe display as a chart, or with little symbols?) and other fruits, vegetables and whole grains help fight cancer. PHYSIL TIVITY dults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity a day. Moderate intensity activities like brisk walks, vacuuming, mopping, or cycling burn three to six times as much energy per minute as siting. hildren and teens should get at least one hour of moderate or vigorous intensity activity each day. Vigorous intensity activities include hiking, running, jumping rope, and sports like baseball, soccer, and basketball. Relaxation nd MEditation Stress can have many negative effects on the body, resulting in increased habits such as smoking, overeating, or increased drinking, which can increase a person s risk of cancer. It s important to take time to relax and rest your body. Relaxation techniques can help alleviate the psychological stress caused by cancer. Relaxing activities, like mediation, breathing exercises, painting, reading, or walking can be great ways to relieve stress. 4 5 South arolina South arolina usiness usiness oalition oalition on Health on Slim Health Down South South arolina South arolina usiness usiness oalition oalition on Health on Slim Health Down South
4 Routine checkups and cancer screenings are recommended for most adults. These tests and checkups can discover cancer before a person even shows symptoms. Early detection is a key step in winning the battle against cancer. Recommended Screenings Include: Pap Smear: Women between ages 21-29, should have a pap smear conducted ever 3 years. Women age should have a pap test and an HPV test. Mammogram: Women age 40 and Up should have an annual breast exam. 6 Prostate ancer: Men age 50 and older should speak with their doctor about a Prostate exam and should always receive a PS blood test with our without rectal exam. Lung ancer Screening: Men and Women age 55 and older with a history of smoking should participate South arolina usiness oalition on Health in an annual low-dose T scan of the chest. olonoscopy: Starting at age 50 men and women should have this procedure every ten years. Several other stool and blood tests can should also be conducted at this age. Understanding olorectal ancer Each year more than 136,000 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer, making olorectal cancer the third most frequently diagnosed cancer in both men and women in the United States. That s why doctors recommend screenings for those over the age of 50. Symptoms Recognizing the symptoms can help with early detection. olorectal cancer symptoms depend on the size and location of the cancer, but commonly experienced symptoms include changes in bowel habits, changes in stool consistency, blood in the stool and abdominal discomfort. Prevention While there is no sure way to prevent colorectal cancer there are steps you can take to help lower your risk. Those steps include, getting active, limiting red meat and processed foods, increasing your consumption of fruits and vegetables, avoiding smoking and excess alcohol, and making sure to get the recommended levels of calcium and vitamin D. Detection Regular screening tests for colon cancer is the single best way to protect yourself. olon cancer is at its most treatable when detected early. olon cancer can even be prevented by finding and treating or removing abnormal growths, known as polyps, which can become cancerous. While doctors recommend that you begin testing at age 50, if you have a history of colon cancer or other important risk factors, your doctor may recommend you begin testing earlier. Screening Options The following tests are recommended colorectal screening options. If a test finds anything irregular, a follow-up colonoscopy is usually necessary. Screening options include: Fecal Occult lood Test or Fecal Immunochemical Test, olonoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, Virtual olonoscopy.
