Today we officially welcome Judy A. Salerno, M.D., M.S., to Susan G. Komen as she begins her tenure as President and CEO. At a recent event hosted by UCLA, Komen-supported UCLA researchers did just that at a

This symposium helped the Affiliate audience to appreciate the impact of their contribution to Komen s Research Programs and provided key talking points they could share with their constituents. Mitochondrial Genome May Influence Susceptibility to Complex Diseases Mitochondria s role as a cell s powerhouse is well established, but whether the mitochondrial genome separately influences biological functions apart from the cellular genome is unknown. Now, Dr. Danny R. Welch, a Komen Scholar at the University of Kansas Medical Center, and collaborators, have discovered that mitochondrial DNA might play a role in whether certain people are more susceptible than others to diseases such as metastatic breast cancer. Click here to read a summary. Komen Announces the ZUMBA Global Research Grant for Breast Cancer Prevention

3 Page 3 of 6 Share Past Issues Zumba Fitness, in partnership with Komen, will raise $3 million for global prevention research. The funds will support the Zumba Global Research Grant for Breast Cancer Prevention that will evaluate the effects of the lignan found in flaxseed on premenopausal women as a safe and low-cost solution to help prevent breast cancer on a global scale. Supporters, survivors, and Zumba enthusiasts can join the Party in Pink campaign to Party, Prevent, and Prevail against breast cancer. More information on Zumba's campaign to "Party, Prevent and Prevail against Breast Cancer" is available here. Leveling the Big Data Playing Field Past Komen Grantee, Dr. Lucila Ohno-Machado, MD, PhD, sought to develop a bioinformatics approach to discover and validate novel breast cancer biomarkers. Her team created a number of new methods and free online resources to more accurately use big data to validate biomarkers without lifting a pipette. Read more here. Encouraging the Immune System to Fight Cancer Newly funded Komen researchers are finding innovative ways to target tumors by encouraging the immune system to destroy cancer cells. Komen Research Maps Around the World Updates We are excited to announce the 2013 updates to the Komen Research Grants Around the World Maps! These maps are now available on Komen.org. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month Join Susan G. Komen in honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October. Leading up to this important month, Komen will be holding the 4th Annual Honoring the Promise Gala at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, on September 20. Funds raised at the event will support our research program and community health work. Throughout the month of October, activities will be held in communities all over the country. Visit our website, or that of your local Affiliate, to find events near you and consider encouraging a loved one to get screened, donate to the cause or sign up as an advocate or race participant during this month of awareness!

Komen recently announced that the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has granted Komen Special Consultative Status, allowing Komen to further share our knowledge and experience with the UN to address a growing cancer crisis in low-resource nations. Reuters, Yahoo! and CNBC also cover the announcement. Science Codex reported on a Komen-funded study that found chronicling a cancer experience online could help reduce symptoms of depression in breast cancer patients. Beneficial effects were particularly strong for women in active medical treatment, most of whom had metastatic disease. The Houston Chronicle reported results from a 2008 Komen Promise Grant study, supported by American Airlines, led by investigators from Thomas Jefferson University s Kimmel Cancer Center has discovered molecular clues that may help physicians therapeutically target inflammatory breast cancer. Science Codex reported on results from the Phase III Komen-funded Carolina Breast Cancer Study that found among white women, household size and losing a job due to one's diagnosis were reasons for delay in treatment, while among African American women, the type of treatment received influenced delay. Susan G. Komen released a Request for Proposals (RFP) to conduct a comprehensive, baseline assessment of breast and cervical cancers in Zambia to identify gaps, challenges, and priority areas of focus for building up cancer control capacities. Application deadline was September 2. Komen TV The global leader in the fight against breast cancer names a new CEO, Dr. Judy Salerno, MD, MS.
