2 Creating Positive Impact Since 1971, Southwest Solutions has worked to help Detroit neighborhoods become stronger, healthier, and more prosperous. Our programs and services address an array of individual, family, and community needs and work holistically to promote human, economic, and community development. Together, they form one of Michigan s most comprehensive neighborhood revitalization and human services organizations, impacting more than 10,000 people annually. Our housing programs began in 1979 and have made Southwest Solutions a leader in planning, developing, and managing affordable housing and commercial property, primarily in southwest Detroit. We revitalize our community through collaborative, highquality and innovative projects, and by promoting homeownership and resident-centered development. Our mixed-use projects stimulate commercial and cultural development. Our economic programs are the youngest, but some of the most impactful and exciting, of Southwest Solutions. These include opportunities for individuals and families to achieve greater economic success through job training, work readiness, adult literacy, homebuyer services, and neighborhood-based entrepreneurial training programs. We provide these services in partnerships across the City of Detroit. The Event Our counseling programs are where our organization first began and they include: Children, Youth, and Family Counseling; Adult Counseling; Supportive Housing; Homeless Services; and Veterans Services. These programs focus on the mental health and other needs of individuals and families across Detroit and southeast Michigan, with the broader goal of supporting community wellbeing. On Friday, September 13, 2019, Southwest Solutions will host our second annual Celebration of Impact fundraiser to mark our 48 years of social impact in Detroit. It will be a memorable evening of celebrating our mission of service and the importance of philanthropy, as well as honoring this year's recipients of our Clement Kern Awards for Social Impact. 3 Clement Kern Awards for Social Impact We will be presenting the second annual Clement Kern Awards for Social Impact to recognize leadership in social impact and justice. Father Kern was the founder of Southwest Solutions, which began in southwest Detroit, an area now recognized as the most diverse neighborhood in Michigan. Monsignor Kern dedicated his life to serving the city and its people, especially the poor. He was known as the conscience of Detroit because of his passionate commitment to social justice. The small community mental health agency that Father Kern founded in 1970 has since grown to become one of Detroit s most impactful and largest social service organizations. The Clement Kern Awards for Social Impact honor local and national leaders who have demonstrated the same commitment to advancing social justice and creating social impact that changes lives and communities. John Van Camp and the Van Camp Social Impact Fund John Van Camp joined Southwest Solutions in 1974 as the second employee. He led Southwest Solutions from 1982 to 2018 as only the third CEO in the organization s nearly 50-year history. John believed that reintegrating the mentally ill and homeless into the community and defeating stigmatization and discrimination also required decent, affordable housing and support services, education and employment opportunities. Because the wellness of residents requires the wellness of neighborhoods, Southwest Solutions expanded its role in Detroit s community revitalization and economic development efforts. John helped create a new vision for what a social service organization could be and the impact it could have on individuals, families and a community. In John's honor, Southwest Solutions is pleased to announce the Van Camp Social Impact Fund, a $1 million campaign to raise endowment and operating support to continue the vital work John started. The Van Camp Social Impact Fund enlists the greater Detroit community in continuing John s legacy of commitment and service to enhance the quality of life, success and self-sufficiency of individuals and families in Detroit s neighborhoods.
