3 Answers to last month s puzzles: Something to Remember In order for Meals on Wheels to deliver food safely, someone must be at home to receive it! We simply cannot leave the food outside your door. It is unsafe, as the food is no longer under someone s control anything can happen to it, from animals or insects violating the container; the temperature of hot food goes down, while the temperature of the cold or frozen food goes up, and food must be kept within a certain range of proper temperature to keep it healthy. If you are not going to be home when we come by, please call us preferably a few days or more in advance, so we can save a little money by not ordering your meal for that day. Our office number is If we attempt to deliver and no-one is there, we will not leave the food outside. After the second failed attempt to deliver to your address, you will be removed from our list until you call us.
4 Coffee Does Not Cause Cancer Most senior citizens may rejoice, as current studies show their favorite drink coffee does not cause cancer, and, in fact, in many cases may prevent it. An international Working Group of 23 scientists convened by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the cancer agency of the World Health Organization (WHO), found no conclusive evidence for a carcinogenic effect of drinking coffee. Drinking coffee was not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans, which places it in Group 3. The large body of evidence currently available led to the re-evaluation of the carcinogenicity of coffee drinking, previously classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B) by IARC in After thoroughly reviewing more than 1000 studies in humans and animals, the Working Group found that there was inadequate evidence for the carcinogenicity of coffee drinking overall. Many epidemiological studies showed that coffee drinking had no carcinogenic effects for cancers of the pancreas, female breast, and prostate, and reduced risks were seen for cancers of the liver and uterine endometrium. For more than 20 other cancers, the evidence was inconclusive. The experts did find, however, that drinking very hot above 149 F (65 C) - beverages probably causes cancer of the esophagus in humans. Water boils at 212 F (100 C). These results suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of esophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drinks themselves, that appears to be responsible, says Dr. Christopher Wild, IARC Director. Drinking very hot beverages was classified as probably carcinogenic to humans (Group 2A). This was based on limited evidence from epidemiological studies that showed positive associations between cancer of the esophagus and drinking very hot beverages. Studies in places such as China, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Turkey, and South America, where tea or maté is traditionally drunk very hot (at about 70 C), found that the risk of esophageal cancer increased with the temperature at which the beverage was drunk. Esophageal cancer is the eighth most common cause of cancer worldwide and one of the main causes of cancer death, with approximately deaths recorded in 2012 (5% of all cancer deaths). The proportion of esophageal cancer cases that may be linked to drinking very hot beverages is not known. A summary of the final evaluations was published yesterday in The Lancet Oncology, and the detailed assessments will be published as Volume 116 of the IARC Monographs. Read more at
