1 All-Cause Mortality, Waterloo Region and Ontario, 2010, 2011 and 2012 Table 1. Number of deaths and age-standardized mortality rate per 100,000 population, by place of residence, Waterloo Region and Ontario, 2010, 2011, and 2012 Number of deaths Mortality rate Place of residence Cambridge Kitchener 1,422 1,395 1, Waterloo North Dumfries Wellesley Wilmot Woolwich Waterloo Region 3,108 3,064 3, Ontario 89,070 89,741 90, Definition: Number and rate of deaths, both overall and for leading causes of mortality. Age-standardized mortality rate is the total number of deaths during a given year per 100,000 population, age-standardized to the 2011 Canadian population. Epidemiology and Health Analytics Team Last updated: March 30, 2017 Page 1

2 Limitations and Notes: Deaths are classified into leading causes based on the primary (i.e., underlying) cause of death, as this is the only type of cause currently available through this data source. The underlying cause of death is (a) the disease or injury which initiated the train of events leading directly to death, or (b) the circumstances of the accident or violence which produced the fatal injury. Co-morbidity contributes uncertainty to classifying the underlying cause of death. Determining true cause of death may be influenced by the social or legal conditions surrounding the death and by the level of medical investigation, e.g., AIDS, suicide. Age Standardization is a method of adjusting rates to minimize the effects that different age compositions have on populations. This method is used when comparing two or more populations. The standard 2011 Canadian population was used as the standard for the rates presented here. Table 2. Number of deaths and age-specific mortality rate per 100,000 population, by age group, Waterloo Region and Ontario, 2012 Place of residence Age group Number Rate Waterloo Region Less than 1 year to 19 years to 44 years to 64 years to 74 years 494 1, years and older 2,037 6,740.8 Ontario Less than 1 year to 19 years to 44 years 3, to 64 years 14, to 74 years 14,775 1, years and older 56,737 6,315.1 This indicator includes only residents who resided within Waterloo Region and excludes any Waterloo Region or Ontario residents who died outside Ontario. Numbers and rates based on numbers less than five cannot be reported and have been suppressed for confidentiality purposes. Epidemiology and Health Analytics Team Last updated: March 30, 2017 Page 2
