Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center is the largest outpatient cancer center in North Texas and part of Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. This 467,000-square-foot facility houses a full range of outpatient cancer care services. Baylor Sammons Cancer Center combines advanced screening, prevention, diagnostic and treatment services in all under one roof. Patients now have easier access to additional services and educational resources to aid them in their cancer journey and their return to everyday life. Baylor T. Boone Pickens Cancer Hospital Baylor T. Boone Pickens Cancer Hospital is the first dedicated cancer hospital in North Texas and only the second in Texas. Baylor s cancer hospital has 113 beds and is linked via a skybridge to the 10-story Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center which are both a part of Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. Combined, the two facilities offer inpatient and outpatient cancer care services conveniently under one roof. The surroundings are comfortable and relaxing for patients, family members and caregivers. The hospital has two inpatient floors, including the blood and marrow transplant unit, and the Oncology Evaluation and Treatment Center which provides night and weekend scheduled urgent care, specifically for Baylor Dallas cancer patients. Baylor T. Boone Pickens Cancer Hospital also has its own pharmacy and radiology services, a concierge dining service, many private rooms, and access to the chapel in the cancer center, the meditation room and the healing garden. More than bricks and mortar, we have expanded and added new programs and treatments and will continue offering innovative services to cancer patients in North Texas and beyond.

Cancer Care Program aylor University Medical Center at Dallas offers a growing oncology program that has seen many recent improvements to provide quality cancer care to the Bcommunity. The lifetime risk of developing cancer is 1 in 2 for men and 1 in 3 for women, according to the American Cancer Society. Given these statistics and the expected population growth in Dallas and the surrounding areas, there will be a substantially increased demand for oncology services. Current estimates predict a 20% increase in the oncology needs for the Baylor Dallas primary service area. Our pledge at Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas is to meet this demand, and to serve Dallas and the surrounding communities with advanced cancer care as technology and new treatments evolve. Qualified Medical Staff Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas medical staff includes a number of medical oncologists, hematologists, and radiation oncologists, as well as surgeons specializing in breast, colorectal, and general cancer surgery. Other physicians that support the cancer program include specialists in gastroenterology, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, and interventional radiology. Nursing Recognition Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas has received Magnet designation for excellence in nursing services by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program. Accreditation In addition to the prestigious accreditation of The Joint Commission, Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas is accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC). The Commission on Cancer accredits programs that can prove they provide high quality cancer care when measured against national standards. CoC-accredited programs continuously strive to improve outcomes while meeting the patients individual needs. Baylor Dallas breast imaging center is also accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). NAPBC accreditation gives our patients the assurance that we are held to the highest standard of care for patients with diseases of the breast.

Following an initial cancer diagnosis, the decisions can often be overwhelming in terms of the different types of physicians you may need to see or the many decisions you will need to make. The patient navigator understands your needs and provides the ability for you to focus on healing. A patient navigator is a registered nurse (RN) who is available to you and your family as an advocate, guide, and moral supporter that can assist you from initial diagnosis through your recovery. The Patient Navigator Will: Help you gather all your medical records. Coordinate referrals to cancer specialists that have expertise in diagnosing and treating cancer. Assist with accessing specialists and scheduling appointments. Coordinate access to services and other resources needed. Answer general questions about cancer. Help you and your caregiver understand your personalized plan of care. Keep track of your treatment progress. Provide information to make your visits easier, such as directions, parking, transportation, and hotels. Provide information on cancer research trials.

Cancer Genetics T he cancer genetics program offers genetic counseling, patient education, genetic testing, interpretation of genetic testing results and tailored options for managing cancer risks. Genetic counseling helps individuals understand the medical, psychological, and familial implications of the genetic contributions to cancer. Genetic counseling services are offered to patients who have a personal or family history that is suspicious of any cancer predisposition syndrome. Common genetic counseling indications include a history of breast and/or ovarian cancer, a history of colon and/or uterine cancer, a history of colon polyposis, a history of melanoma or a history of multiple types of cancers in the same individual. The genetic counselor will develop a risk assessment to determine the likelihood of having an inherited form of cancer. If indicated, laboratory analyses of cancer predisposition genes will be performed. If an individual has a genetic condition that predisposes him or her to cancer, there are specific screening, prevention, and treatment guidelines that can help reduce his or her risk of disease. Additionally, other family members could be tested to determine their risk of cancer. Dental Clinic A visit to the dentist before beginning cancer treatment may be an important part of your overall healing. Certain medications used to treat cancer can affect oral health. Doctors and dentists recommend extractions and other intensive dental work be completed prior to cancer treatment. This allows for optimal healing. The dental clinic provides oral health care before and after cancer treatment, blood and marrow transplants and organ transplants. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy have the potential to harm healthy cells in the mouth. Exercise Program Our program helps patients improve their physical and psychological well-being through exercise. Trained staff members create individualized programs tailored to patients fitness levels, needs and goals. Exercise can help reduce the side effects associated with cancer treatment. Ask your physician for a referral. Integrative Medicine The integrative medicine program at Baylor Sammons Cancer Center focuses on each patient s needs from a holistic viewpoint. The program offers quality care in a healing environment that combines complementary, holistic, ancillary and traditional medical approaches. The physician specialists on our medical staff take into account the whole person: body, mind and spirit. The makeup of each patient is considered, along with the internal and external environmental factors that affect well-being. A program is then developed and tailored to fit each patient s unique requirements. Services Offered: Acupuncture Relaxation techniques 90-minute initial consultations Specialty lab testing Nutritional counseling Bio-impedance testing Targeted nutritional supplements

Oncology Therapy Program Our physical and occupational therapists help patients stay fit and strong as they undergo cancer treatments. Evidence-based practice shows that therapy can increase strength and endurance, improve mobility, reduce fatigue, improve mood, reduce mental stress and anxiety, and increase overall function in all areas of life. Patient Education and Support The Virginia R. Cvetko Patient Education and Support Center offers many educational and support programs that allow cancer patients to share experiences and learn from other survivors. Group meetings allow patients to learn more about their disease from experts, find encouragement and emotional support, and learn solutions for managing the challenges of living with cancer. Services include: Access to the medical director, nurses, chaplains, social workers, clinical psychologists, and art therapists Individual and group education A resource library with internet access, books and educational materials Assistance with locating community resources Center Demonstration Kitchen The Virginia R. Cvetko Patient Education and Support Center offers a demonstration kitchen where a chef and registered dieticians teach patients and their families how to cook nutritionally and deliciously. Eating healthy is crucial during cancer treatment. Sometimes patients experience side effects that impact their nutritional intake and may need to know how to cook healthy foods that accommodate new nutrition and taste needs. Behavioral Health The primary goal of Behavioral Health is to help cancer patients manage common cancer-related physical, emotional and behavioral health challenges. The program also assists with life-transitional stressors that may interfere with daily functioning, thereby helping to promote overall health, quality of life and well-being for those it serves. Some examples are: Complementary techniques for pain and nausea including biothermal touch therapies and aromatherapy Quality of life interventions including fatigue management Shibashi group exercise class that combines gentle and slow movements and breathing, which offer many health benefits (Tai Chi and QiGong) Lymphedema Services An extension of our oncology therapy program, our lymphedema program offers upper and lower extremity lymphedema treatment. The complete decongestive physiotherapy treatment is a 5-step treatment process that includes hygiene and topical skin products, manual lymph drainage, bandaging and exercises, dietary guidelines, and patient education. Chapel and Meditation Room The chapel is a quiet, tranquil space that offers patients and families a place to worship, pray, meditate and seek comfort. There is a meditation room on the skybridge for contemplation, meditation, prayer and a moment s rest. Grief support and recovery services are available to help deal with the effects of illness. A Healing Environment Every part of Baylor Sammons Cancer Center is designed to promote healing. Natural lighting and specialized panels light the hallways providing a natural and calming atmosphere. Beautiful touches like gardens and abundant seating throughout the building provide room to relax and reflect. Clowns and pet therapy offer cheer, while art and music carts deliver healing sights and sounds. Baylor Sammons Cancer Center provides patients with a healing center that nurtures the soul while treating the disease.

Clinical Trials If you re fighting cancer, it s nice to know your hospital is doing all it can to fight cancer with you. At Baylor, this means we offer advanced treatments today, and conduct clinical trials that may lead to even better treatments tomorrow. Every research study we conduct has you in mind. By taking part in a clinical trial, you can: Play a more active role in your own health care Help others by contributing to medical research Have the satisfaction of aiding in progress against disease Receive the most recent information and evidence-based care from our experts To see if you qualify for enrollment in one of our clinical trials call BAYLOR, where you can learn more about active research trials. Cancer Research Baylor Sammons Cancer Center has long been a leader in researching ways to better detect and treat cancer. Patients currently have access to more than 100 cancer clinical trials at any time and the Swim Across America Innovative Clinical Trials Center provides more clinical trials and research laboratory space, additional research staff and specialized clinical trials, all in a dedicated space. Services Palliative Care When a patient is facing a life-threatening illness, we go beyond advanced medical treatments and offer compassionate care to help you and your family members cope. This service is called palliative care. The primary mission of the Palliative Care Program is to provide symptomatic relief to patients, improve their quality of life, and assist with advance care planning or direction. The Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas Palliative Care team includes physicians, nurses, chaplains, social workers, therapists, pharmacists, and other health care professionals. These dedicated team members are trained to help you with the issues you may face in dealing with a critical illness. The Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas Palliative Care Consultation Service is hospital-based, and different from hospice care in that patients are often continuing active treatment of their disease. You may continue to receive treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation, while also working with the Palliative Care team. To learn more about our cancer clinical trials, call patient navigation at or visit BaylorHealth.com/CancerResearch. Cancer research studies on the Baylor Dallas campus are conducted through Baylor Research Institute, Texas Oncology and US Oncology. Each reviews, approves and conducts clinical trials independently.

Blood and Marrow Transplant Program Community Outreach The power of health begins with prevention and early detection. Since its beginning in 1983, the Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) program at Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas has performed more than 5,000 transplantations, ranking it among the largest in the country. The program has vast expertise in autologous, allogenic-related and allogenic-unrelated donor transplantation. Treatment is available for acute and chronic leukemia, Hodgkin s lymphoma, non- Hodgkin s lymphoma, myeloma and related diseases, as well as selected solid tumors. In 1998, the BMT program at Baylor Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas became one of the first in the United States to receive initial accreditation by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT). The program has continued to maintain its accreditation. This recognition placed Baylor Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas among an elite group of BMT centers nationwide. At Baylor Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas, patients have access to a comprehensive continuum of BMT services, including pre-transplant evaluation and treatment, inpatient and outpatient care, long-term follow-up care, education, support, housing coordination and financial services. Caring for cancer patients and their families requires comprehensive planning to provide the diagnostic and treatment capabilities for the entire episode of care. This means reaching beyond the hospital s doors with information, education, and support to enable cancer patients to take control of their own health in a preventive and meaningful way. One of the ways Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas fulfills this role is through community health events and outreach activities. Baylor Dallas sponsors a variety of awareness events and screenings, including For Women For Life and It s a Guy Thing, our annual women s and men s health fairs, community health screenings, and skin cancer screenings. We offer community education on a variety of topics that stress the importance of regular screenings to promote early detection of cancer. We are also able to offer our new lung cancer screening CT exam, designed to identify early signs of lung cancer in patients with a long history of smoking. Support groups offer an environment where cancer patients as well as their loved ones can talk about their disease and receive support and encouragement from others. Baylor offers a variety of cancer support groups. Call The Cvetko Center at for times and locations.
