2 Message from the Chairperson I am pleased to present to you our annual report on the Cancer Program at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. We are the area s longest running Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program certified by the Commission on Cancer, a division of the American College of Surgeons. We are also Tage Haase, MD the area s most comprehensive cancer treatment center offering care for a wide variety of patients. The Medical Center tries to provide for all of our patients needs, both great and small. We have tried to stay on the cutting edge of technology, techniques and procedures while giving the personal comfort and care that you expect from your community hospital. One example of this is the recent acquisition and use of the da Vinci Surgical System. This gives us the ability to perform robotically assisted laparoscopic prostate resections. Patients no longer have to travel out of town for surgical robotic treatment of prostate cancer. This technique allows our surgeons to treat patients while providing them a minimum of pain and disability. We are also dedicated to the prevention and early treatment of cancers. Colorectal cancer is in the top five cancers in the nation. We have participated with the Kentucky Cancer Program to increase screening for colorectal cancer. This is one cancer that has seen a decrease in the death rate in part due to these screening measures. For more information on colorectal cancer, we are highlighting it in this year s report. We would like to thank you for taking the time to read our report for We will continue to try to provide for your cancer care needs in the best way possible. Tage Haase, MD Board Certification in General Surgery Committee Chairperson Colon and Rectal Cancer Update Colon and rectal cancer combined is the third most prevalent type of cancer nationwide as well as here in Kentucky trailing only cancers of the lung and breast. Although advances in chemotherapy and radiation treatments have afforded patients longer life expectancies after diagnosis, the resultant James R. Curtiss, MD morbidity and mortality rates remain high. Colon and rectal cancer affect both genders equally and is slightly increased in the African-American population. Is there any good news? The answer is, absolutely! Colon and rectal cancer are largely preventable diseases through various screening tests. A colonoscopy is the gold standard of these tests. Being the most widely used test for colon and rectal cancer, the colonoscopy allows both diagnostic and therapeutic options. A colonoscopy is a sedated procedure (painless) that lasts approximately 15 to 20 minutes and is done in an outpatient setting. Any precursors of colon cancer (polyps) can be removed during the procedure, and the findings of the exam are typically available at the conclusion of the test. The biggest reluctance or drawback in the past about patient screenings has been the bowel preparation the dreaded gallon jug of stuff. Well, more good news! Newer, more patient friendly bowel preparations are available and have been well received by patients. Ready for more good news? Depending on the results of the exam, a repeat colonoscopy may not be needed for 5, 7, or even 10 years, so a colonoscopy is not an annual procedure. Who gets screened? If you are 50 years of age or older or have a family history of colorectal cancer, you are eligible for screening. Of course, any change in bowel habits, bleeding or pain warrants investigation. The screening colonoscopy is covered by insurance and is an important part of our preventive health. So, no more excuses see your doctor about colorectal cancer screening today! James R. Curtiss, MD Board Certification in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine
