3 PRESIDENT S WORD Jean-François Riopel Once again, the end of the year is coming. At the association, there are few new things. The next annual meeting is still in our cardboards. We will resume in the next bulletin to give you all the information you need to participate. As you see on the front page, it is written Merry Christmas. Why would we have to leave a tradition which goes back up at the beginning of the French colony. Of course, for some 350 years, the tradition was religious. I remember myself very well that my grandmother, received us, celebrated in the New Year's Day. Christmas was above all, a religious feast. In time, her children celebrated in Christmas by not forgetting the midnight mass and several times, the following 2 low masses. Christmas means "birth day" for Catholicism. It is obviously about the birth of Jesus. Beyond this period, although religion is more and more absent in our lives, the fact remains that we still celebrate Christmas even if the relation in the religion has declined. We have no more the same marks, but we still celebrate this day. Is this a reason to give up a tradition to use those of others? I do not think so. Already in my childhood, Christmas meant more gifts, Santa Claus, love feast more than religious feast. If we continue in this tradition, only the reference will be changed. It is not this what Catholicism did with a so-called pagan festival nearly 2000 years ago, symbolically transforming it? So we should not hesitate to use this expression, well anchored here, to perpetuate a part of our history even if, its meaning had changed. Good reading! Thus, Merry Christmas and to use a popular Quebec expression, "to heck with the rest"! SOCIAL EVENTS CONCERNING THE ASSOCIATION by Jean-François Riopel In St-Jacques de Montcalm, on September 24, 2017, at the age of 80, passed away Mr. André Riopel, husband of Mrs. Yvette Giroux, residing in St-Roch of L'Achigan, formerly of St-Esprit. 8 PATRONYMIC OF RIOPEL by Michel Riopel (translated by Suzanne Riopel-Homier François René RIOPEL like his father got married twice. The first time on July 18 th, 1864 in Bourgbarré with Jeanne-Marie PELLERIN. She was 43 years old. She died on February 1 st, 1888 in Bourgbarré without giving birth to children. He married his second wife Anastasie SOUET, on July 31 st, He was 55 years old and she was 33 years old. She was a widow from François FORGE. Only one child was born from this second union, Isidore, on June 1 st, 1891 in Bourgbarré ( below) François René RIOPEL died on September 2 nd, 1912 in Bourgbarré Isidore François RIOPEL was the father of Léon, born on February 3 rd, 1920 in Laillé, himself a father of two sons from whom the second died in The possible descendant of Léon was not known. He married on September 23 rd, 1920 in Bourgbarré, Élisa GARNIER and they were the parents of four children, the first three were daughters and they are deceased today. The last one, Edouard, was born on April 8 th, 1924, without any known descendant. He died on May 4 th, Among the 37 RIOPEL taken in census, 1 man is part of this branch of the family. The 37 RIOPEL taken in census, spread out among three branches of the family, live mostly in Ille-et-Vilaine for they are 22 in this department. 4 live in other Breton department, 6 in Île-de-France and 5 somewhere in France. Do all these RIOPEL s have a common origin? We already saw that the RIOPEL from Québec talk of a spanish origin. If this is possible regarding l île d Oléron, the story seems difficult to believe for the RIOPEL from Britany where the first mention dates from The shortage of registers before 1651 in Saint-Georges-d Oléron make believe that starting from this specific year, we found seven couples on l Île-d oléron among them only 2 spouses wearing the name RIOPEL where born RIOPEL. In Ille-et-Vilaine, for the period of , 23 marriage certificates were found, and we must add almost a dozen couples without a marriage certificate because they found no register. If all have a far common origin, statistics speak in favor of l Ille-et-Vilaine. Very few elements can nurture this hypothesis. The port of Messac-Guipry, on the Vilaine was very active since the 13 th century. They used to unload wine and salt among other merchandises. This last item was coming from a saltpan from Guérande and Saillé. Guipry was the starting point of *la route du sel* (salt road) toward Britany s salt, Saulnières and in these lands. The wine was coming from Bordeaux. At this time, there was and there still is some vineyards on l Île d Oléron in the north with the name Bretagne. Across the fields, Messac was as close as 15 km from Poligné and 25 km from Chanteloup. We can assume that the RIOPEL, being adventurous, boarded in Guipry to meet again on the l Île d Oléron. The end. 8 December 2017 Bulletin de L Association des Familles Riopel / Riopelle, Les Tonnelleries

9 HOWARD RIOPELLE / HOCKEY PLAYER by Robert Riopel Who has not dreamed one day to wear the colors of the prestigious Hockey team the Montreal Canadiens. Well, this dream has become a reality for our genealogical personality: Howard Joseph Riopelle, grandson of a Riopel native of L Assomption, Quebec. Howard Joseph Riopelle is the fifteenth child of the couple formed by Jean-Baptiste Riopelle and Julia Isabella MacDonald. Born January 30, 1922, Howard grew up in the heart of the "Village" - now little Italy in Ottawa and following the outbreak of the Second World War, joined the RCAF. After serving overseas, Howard launched his hockey career with the Royal of Montreal ( ), and helped them win the 1947 Allan Cup. He then joined the professional ranks with the Montreal Canadiens ( ) before closing his hockey career with the Ottawa Senators ( ) in the Quebec Senior League (QSL). Howard began his career in the city of Ottawa with his brothers (Lasalle Ottawa and Ottawa St. Pats). When Howard was with the St. Pats, he was coached by legendary goaltender Alex Connell. Connell taught Howard a lot, and they became very close friends afterwards. After completing his junior career, he joined the Air Force (RCAF). Howard was coached by another NHL greats. Joe Primeau coached the Toronto Air Force and guided Howard and the rest of the boys to the Allan Cup semifinal in 1943, where they lost to the mighty Ottawa Commandoes with Mac's explosive line Colville - Alex Shibicky - Neil Colville, who had played earlier for the New York Rangers. Immediately after the war, Howard received two offers from the NHL. The first was from Joe Primeau who wanted him in Toronto and the other was from Tom Gorman who wanted him in Montreal. Howard chose to go to Montreal. Unfortunately, he was the last player to be cut off at this training camp in 1945, not bad considering that he had not worn the skates for almost two years. He ended up playing for the Royal of Montreal (QSHL) for two seasons winning the prestigious Allan Cup in During his two years with the Royal, he had 70 points (30 goals and 40 assists) in 70 regular season games in addition 22 points (10 goals and 12 assists) in 22 playoff games. This production opened the doors for him to finally become a pro. He made his NHL debut with the Montreal Canadiens in the season as a left winger. 11 HOCKEY PLAYER by Robert Riopel Wearing number 4, Howard played three seasons in Montreal, producing 43 points (27 goals) in 169 games until a back injury forced him out of the NHL. He composed a trio with Maurice Richard and Elmer Lach, following the leg injury that ended Toe Blake's career. He is briefly used on this attack unit, trying to exhilarate the famous "Punch Line", but he spent most of his three years in Montreal playing a defensive role, often playing alongside Leo Gravelle and Billy Reay., on the third trio. Howard attempted to participate in the Montreal training camp the following season but gave up his efforts. He did not play during the season. But he tried again, this time with the Ottawa Senators (QSHL). He played four seasons for the Ottawa team. He still led the league for points in the season, where he had 60 assists and 31 goals. He scored 196 points (73 goals, 123 assists) in 206 games in the QSHL / QHL between 1951 and When he retired from hockey, Howard developed an interest in entrepreneurship and decided to open a cloth store in Ottawa in At this time, he hooked up his skate for good. In 2013, at the age of 91, Howard passed away.
