2 Dear Friends, We are proud to partner with New Haven Works to increase the economic vitality of the communities we serve. JAMES P. TORGERSON, PRESIDENT & CEO, UIL HOLDINGS CORP. My previous job forced my family on state aid for health insurance. New Haven Works referred me to United Illuminating, where my new job doubled my pay and added affordable benefits. My family can stop living paycheck to paycheck. BERNICE RODRIGUEZ-COLON CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE, UIL HOLDINGS CORP. Home to a world-class research university, the fourth largest healthcare network in the U.S., a biotechnology sector experiencing a renaissance, and several large construction projects underway or about to break ground, the City of New Haven offers great opportunities for good jobs. At the same time, recent studies show that Connecticut is the most unequal state in America, with the highest per-capita income and a joblessness crisis in our cities. In New Haven, a quarter of the working-age population is unemployed or underemployed, while only 1 in 4 jobs is held by a city resident. In 2013, major employers, unions, and elected city offi cials collaborated to create New Haven Works, a public/private organization designed to ensure that regional employers and businesses have access to a local talent pool and that qualified, pre-screened city residents have access to good jobs. In our first year, New Haven Works made significant progress on three objectives: 1. Build a talent pool for regional businesses by recruiting, preparing, and screening City of New Haven residents for available jobs in growth occupations 2. Create access to regional jobs for city residents by collaborating with partner and participating employers to ensure that local residents successfully navigate the pathways to employment New Haven Works asked the right questions to identify our needs and our ideal candidates. Together, New Haven Works and Yale University are transforming successful internships into satisfying careers in technology. This year, we had 100% retention for temporary hires from NHW. Now, we can focus on maintaining the City s parks for residents to enjoy. 3 Our Results New Haven Works is the stuff of careers, not just jobs. They matched my law experience to a Yale Law School opening and got me an interview. I was hired, then promoted! 323 members hired or placed $20.00 starting hourly wage for 17% of NHW placements Highest NHW placement wage Average NHW placement wage $36.92/hr $16.52/hr OSIKHENA AWUDU SENIOR ADMIN. ASSISTANT YALE UNIVERSITY 674 members became ready-to-hire 83% of NHW placements were still on the job after 181 days 1,526 2,319 New Haven residents became members of NHW 66% High School Diploma or GED 24% Bachelors or higher 17% of NHW placements from the re-entry population New Haven residents attended 84% a NHW orientation of NHW placements are people of color (70% Black, 11% Hispanic) 4 5

When I got the job, New Haven Works gave me a bus pass to get back and forth to work my first week it meant they really cared.
