3 Lightning Process Empowers Thousands to Transform Lives For more than ten years the Phil Parker Lightning Process has helped thousands of people transform their health and lives. The Process is specifically developed to resolve life s most common and debilitating conditions including CFS/ME, Chronic Pain, Anxiety, Depression, Addictions and OCD. The Lightning Process is an empowering training course which teaches individuals how they can influence their health and life using techniques based on the way the brain and body interact. Osteopath and Personal Development Expert Phil Parker designed the Lightning Process at his London clinic. It builds on the concepts of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Osteopathy and Life Coaching. Eriksen, Kirsti Malterud who are university researchers from Bergen, can be found here: Dr. Bruun Wyller, who is considered to be one of Norway's leading experts on ME, says: 'Recent research on CFS pathophysiology has revealed alterations of cardiovascular regulation and thermoregulation, characterized by enhanced sympathetic nervous activity and increased secretion of epinephrine. These findings indicate a state of permanent distress response sustained arousal in CFS patients. Based upon our findings, we have formulated a theory of sustained arousal in CFS, which seems to correspond quite neatly to the theoretical considerations underlying the Lightning Process.' 6 Press release from March ,000 awarded for new research into the treatment of a chronic childhood condition A research study looking into interventions and treatment options for a chronic childhood condition has been awarded funding of 164,000 by the Linbury Trust and the Ashden Trust. The funding has been awarded to a research team led by Dr Esther Crawley, Consultant Paediatrician at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases NHS Foundation Trust, also known as the Min, and Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol. Esther and her team will carry out a pilot project to investigate whether it is possible to look at two different approaches to the intervention and treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME (CFS/ME) in Children. CFS/ME in children is a relatively common and potentially serious condition affecting over one per cent of children across the UK. Over 50 per cent of affected children are bed bound at some stage of their illness and have an average time off school of one academic year. Despite this there is a limited evidence-base for treatment for children with CFS/ME. This research also incorporates the first study on health economic cost of this condition in children. Dr Esther Crawley said:

7 We are delighted to have been awarded this research grant. CFS/ME can have a profound impact on a child s life. We hope that our research will enable us to understand more about this condition and how we can help those children who suffer with it. The team will carry out a pilot project to investigate how to recruit to a randomised controlled trial looking at the Phil Parker Lightning Process and specialist medical care. This will be the first study of its kind in this area, and the team hopes to establish a basis for a larger scale multicentre research project. The specialist Paediatric CFS/ME service at the MIN is the largest regional paediatric CFS/ME clinical service in the UK, and also provides services nationally. The team currently provides assessment and treatment for over 200 children from across the UK and Western Europe each year. Approximately ten per cent of the children referred into the service are housebound and are assessed at home. The Phil Parker Lightning Process is an intervention that is used for a variety of conditions including CFS/ME and has been developed from osteopathy, coaching and neuro-linguistic programming. It is a three-day training programme run by registered practitioners and designed to teach individuals a new set of techniques for improving life and health. Phil Parker, designer of the Lightning Process said: We are thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate on this exciting and groundbreaking research with Dr Crawley and her team. It is vitally important that all interventions that could assist children with CFS/ME to return to school and improve their health are explored. We hope that this study is successful and leads to further

8 research collaborations between the Lightning Process and specialist teams like Esther s. The study will involve in depth interviews with the patients and their parents, and the primary outcome measure will be school attendance after six-months. It is hoped that over 90 children aged between eight and 18 and their families will be involved in the study. They will be recruited after assessment by the specialist team at the MIN. 9 Press release September 2012 JOINT HARVARD AND KING S COLLEGE STUDY INTO LIGHTNING PROCESS After the XMRV, is this good news for ME/CFS at last? The Lightning Process (LP), developed in the 1990s by British osteopath and personal development expert Phil Parker, has been the subject of a qualitative study by researchers at Harvard and King s College, London, published in British Journal of Health Psychology. In this independent study of 9 young people, who had CFS/ME and used the LP as an approach, researchers reported that, In summary, the majority of the young people participating in this study reported largely positive experiences of the Lightning Process, despite all having experienced unsuccessful treatments for CFS in the past and typically having lived with CFS for a number of years with significant disability. Additionally they stated that, Two reported dissatisfaction and no improvement, while seven were satisfied and were much improved. This comes a week after the initially promising studies into the XMRV virus were dismissed as un-reproducible. This is the first published peer reviewed research into this technique, although it has often been reported as helping thousands of people worldwide. A survey published in 2010 by the ME Association showed that in answer to the question What were the affects of the approach on the symptoms, in the category for greatly improved, the Lightning Process was rated top. In a survey by the Lightning Process of 1092 who reported they had CFS/ME, 888 (81.3%) said that they no longer had the issues they came with by day three of the LP course. This research is very encouraging, and supports the need for a quantitative study (Random Control Trial) to be undertaken. Phil Parker is quoted as saying I very much welcome this research. I am pleased that serious researchers are taking an interest in CFS/ME and the LP, although the Lightning Process is described wrongly in the paper as working by denying the limitations of this illness. This is not correct, instead we work with this serious physical illness by teaching people to use the connection between the body, brain and mind, to help their body to recover before they can start doing more. Equally the paper mentions one individual feeling blamed for not getting better; this is upsetting as it the opposite of the Lightning Process approach, as covered in my book Dû Unlock Your Potential With A Word and unfortunately shows that they didn t quite understand what they were being taught.
