2 PAGE 2 TRESTLE BOARD DECEMBER 2016 Masters Message First and foremost, I am honored to have been elected and installed Worshipful Master of Saint Andrews Lodge. I'm very much looking forward to the new year, continuing the good work of my predecessors Worshipful Mills, and Worshipful Long. Saint Andrews has evolved quite a bit over the past few years and I can say with great pleasure that I have evolved along with it. I arrived at the door of Saint Andrews some years ago, with a very limited perception of Freemasonry. I was intrigued by the symbols, especially the square and compass, I saw it frequently. Having been a student of the Fine Arts and Architecture in New York City growing up... they certainly were all around me, and always caught my eye and imagination. I was intrigued by the history, by the mystery yet I had no idea how one becomes a Mason. To my knowledge at the time, there weren't Masons in the family (I have since learned that my great grandfather was indeed, a Mason!) I had no friends who I knew of who were Masons, there was simply no one I could ask. I always wondered. One day I learned of the annual Open House. This was my chance to have a look, find out a little more. I stepped forward of my own free will and accord, of my own curiosity to learn, and of my own faith in what I perceived Masonry might be, and knocked. I was greeted at the door by a very kind, and gentle, and knowledgeable man. I did not know at the time what a Worshipful Master was, but I was having my first lesson right then and there! What an introduction! What a wealth of knowledge! I had a feeling that this just might be the beginning of something really special. I was taken in and accepted by the Brethren of Saint Andrews Lodge, mentored every step of the way by that man... through all of my degrees and RAISED!! I am delighted to have such a friend as Worshipful Craig I. Brown still beside me as Secretary of Saint Andrews Lodge, and chief advisor as I preside in the East. Since then our Lodge has experienced a most excellent resurgence. I have had the pleasure of welcoming many others into Saint Andrews Lodge, to assist them in following their own individual paths, even as we come together as one to support the Lodge. I attribute that growth to the environment of brotherly love and friendship, and to the support and guidance that our past masters have provided for us. From RW Ronald Metcalf, and Wor. Jack Hartman I learn about the time honored traditions and customs of Masonry... from RW Sutherland, and RW Sawyer proper protocols and procedure... from Wor. Floyd Caron, good practice in ritual. And from all of you... great charity in fellowship. I want to thank these men I admire, for all I have learned, for all I will learn, and all we share. As I endeavor to continue on my journey to improve myself in Masonry, I can only hope to serve our ancient and honorable institution to the very best of my ability, leading by the same example as I have observed so many times in all of you. 3 PAGE 3 TRESTLE BOARD DECEMBER 2016 Past master s message Greetings, Well as you may know the lodge election for new master and line officers was held on November 30th. I wish the ingoing master Joe Rella all the best for his year He is a good man and I have no doubt that the lodge is in good hands this year. I want to thank all of you for the honor of being master this year it has been a great learning experience for me both as a mason and a man. The guidance and council from the brethren as well as the past masters made it a very enjoyable year. As I join the past masters of Saint Andrews I am humbled to member of this group. I also extend a hand to help the new master where I can when asked for my duty as a master mason does not stop here. I have no problem helping in degrees, lectures or wherever asked to serve even sitting on sidelines and watching Saint Andrews thru the 2017 year. If you haven t been to the lodge I invite you to come as you will see a new look with the new custom made leather aprons and collars and jewels for 2017 Having completed being master for Saint Andrews I again wish to thank everyone for the experience and friendships I have made along the way and look forward to see what my Masonic career holds for me. I look forward to more light in this craft, and bring it to the eyes and ears who want to see and hear. I always have said that masonry is like a diamond in the ruff and every degree and new roads that leads to a new cut in that diamond which reflects light and beauty. But I have also learned to stop, step back, behold and enjoy what has been accomplished to date. Thank you again for the privilege of serving you this year. 4 DECEMBER 2016 TRESTLE BOARD PAGE 4 My brother, my brother My Sister and I were watched by an Aunt on Thanks- giving Day back in My Father drove my Mother to Portsmouth Hospital, returned that evening and said In a few days your Mother will bring home a little Tom Turkey for your Thanksgiving Celebration, but you can t eat him! Michael, being the new baby, was spoiled by my parents with a big assist by Dr. Spock s new book on raising your children. Michael had a happy childhood and attended Lafayette Elementary School, Portsmouth Junior High School, and graduated from Portsmouth Senior High School, Class of He furthered his education at George Washington University in Washington, D. C., receiving a Bachelor s Degree of Business in June of Michael set out to conquer the world, but the world wasn t too agreeable, so he returned home and entered the family business, Goodman s, until it closed in the fall of Michael and I petitioned St. Andrew s Lodge together in the fall of We were initiated on November 12, 1979, passed on January 14, 1980, and raised on February 25, 1980, by Our Father and Brother, the late Melvin Goodman. Michael was appointed to the line at the Annual Meeting in 1980, and 3 years later at the Annual Meeting in 1983 was elected to become the Worshipful Master for 1984 at only 28 years old. Michael was a great ritualist, had an upbeat attitude, and went out of his way to please everyone. He had a excellent year but found himself frustrated, trying to govern a Lodge where a majority of the Brethren and Officers were many years his Senior. About six months after leaving the East, Michael was awarded the Major-General John Sullivan Medal at the age of 29. How did he receive this medal so quickly?

5 After his term of Master was up, he became the Electrician (assisting Brother Oscar Gibson our Tyler ), and eventually became the Tyler. In 1986, he was appointed the District Chairman of The Solomon Two Membership Building Program. He was a Past Patron of Rivermouth Chapter 54, Order of the Eastern Star in Portsmouth, N. H. He was a member and Past Excellent High Priest of Washington Chapter #3; Royal Arch Masons member and Past Thrice Illustrious Master of Davenport Council #5, and served as The Most Illustrious Grand Master of The Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of New Hampshire in He was also a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Portsmouth and Dover; and New Hampshire Consistory 32nd Degree of Nashua. Michael was extremely proud that he was only the third brother of the Jewish Faith to have been elected Master of St. Andrew s since the Lodge was founded in 1848; and equally pleased that the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire appointed him as their Representative to the Grand Lodge of Israel. In 1984, Michael needing a Junior Deacon, appointed me, saying I could step out of the line the next year. I accepted, didn t quit the line, and in 1988 Michael installed me as the new Worshipful Master of St. Andrew s Lodge. He continued on as Tyler, giving me his full support as Master, but took great delight in being my chief critic. I found his behavior annoying, but that s what sibling rivalry is all about. Although we had different personalities and styles of leadership, we both always had the best interests of St. Andrew s at heart. Michael had back surgery around 1999, and a bad infection set in. The massive amount on anti-biotics he received, was too much for his liver to metastasize and he fell very ill. He was diagnosed with non- alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver, the very same disease that took our Father in July With medication, Michael bounced back for a while; but his Doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital made it painfully clear after being on the List for three years, he wouldn t survive the wait for his liver transplant. He temporarily moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where the University Hospital transplanted organs from cadavers. Within 24 hours of being approved on their waiting list, he received a liver on February 14, Flipping over the hourglass to begin a second chance on life, Michael didn t know the sands would run out exactly one year later to the day! Michael was called to the Celestial Lodge above on February 14, Michael will be remembered most of all for his friendship, and his dedication to his family, and for being a devoted husband, and a proud father of his son Benjamin. Vaya Con Dios my Brother, perhaps the G.A.O. T. U. will allow the sibling rivalry to continue when we meet again. Your Brother Always, Mark
