2 2 The surgery is over, but your job is just beginning. Your patients expect comfortable, complication-free healing, but this is not always as easy as it sounds. Post-operative surgical site infections (SSIs) disrupt the healing processes of surgical patients, drain monetary resources, and demand more from hospital staff. Along with the day-to-day demands of caring for a post-operative patient, you must monitor the surgical wound site constantly to help reduce the risk of infection and ensure it heals properly.

3 3 Staying on the alert for HAIs. Despite hard work to reduce incidents, healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs) continue to be a serious problem. HAIs are one of the top 10 leading causes of death each year in the United States. 1 As the second most common HAI, surgical site infections (SSIs) account for 20% of all HAIs in hospitalized patients. 2 Surgical patients who contract an SSI are 60% more likely to spend time in the ICU after surgery than an uninfected surgical patient. 3 Once acquired, SSIs can cost up to $29,000 per incident with an additional 7-10 hospital days for each patient s stay. 4 Patients with an SSI after discharge are 5X more likely to be readmitted to a hospital. 3 So, what can you do to help reduce the risks of HAIs, especially SSIs?

5 5 Close. Protect. Cover. Choosing the appropriate closure is the first step to protecting your patients and helping them heal infection-free. 6 6 Close. Safe wound closure. Choosing a closure method. Artificial wound closures support healing until skin is strong enough to handle daily tensile forces. Traditionally sutures or staples performed this role. 8 8 Protect. A gentle, protective barrier. Strip away pain, not skin. We understand that helping you keep patients comfortable while protecting the skin from the unnecessary injury and pain associated with Medical Adhesive-Related Skin Injuries (MARSI) is of utmost importance. When working with adhesives that aren t silicone-based, you may want added protection for your patients. 3M Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film forms a protective barrier between skin and the adhesive dressing, device, or tape to help reduce the risk of skin damage. What is MARSI? MARSI results when adhesive attachment to the skin is stronger than the patient s own skin cell-to-cell attachment. 19 Removing or repositioning tape can cause epidermal layers to separate. In mild cases, there may be no visible trauma, but in other cases irritation and injury can be more obvious. MARSI may take several forms, including: Tension Injury or Blisters, Allergic Contact Dermatitis, Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film should only be applied when no ignition sources or heat-producing devices are in use. Avoid using around flames. Using the foam applicator, apply a uniform coating of film over the entire area of concern. 9 9 Cover. Complete protection. Healing results are optimal when bacteria are kept away. You ve closed the wound and protected the skin, but bacteria can still find a way in if the site is not properly covered. Unfortunately, traditional gauze dressings do not provide an ideal environment to protect post-operative wounds. Single gauze dressings provide no barrier to bacteria. 21 Bacteria can pass through 64 layers of dry gauze.
