Professional Hypnotherapy & Hypnosis Training Hypnotherapy & Hypnosis For IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
What Is IBS? (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) IBS is the term for a collection of symptoms that may include: Abdominal (Stomach) Pain Or Cramping Abdominal Bloating Or Swelling Change Of Bowel Movements Such As Constipation, Diarrhoea (or both) Excessive Wind Urgent Need To Go To The Toilet Passing Mucus Feeling Of Not quite emptied after going to the toilet.
Secondary symptoms can include: Sleep Disturbances Fybromyalgia, Back Pain Chronic Pelvic Pain Interstitial Cystitis Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Migraine Headaches. Female patients who have IBS have also reported discomfort during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia).
Sometimes sub-divided into: IBS-D is when the digestive system contracts quickly, transiting products of digestion rapidly through the digestive tract, resulting in frequent, watery bowel movements (diarrhea) IBS - C is when the digestive system contracts slowly, delaying transit time for products of digestion, resulting in hard, difficult to pass, infrequent stools (constipation). (Stools can be small and hard like pebbles) IBS - A - is when the transit time throughout the digestive tract fluctuates and stools may alternate between diarrhea and constipation. These extreme stool consistencies can sometimes even occur within the same bowel movement.
Secondary psychological symptoms can include: Anxiety (at not being able to make it to the toilet in time) Depression Decrease In Quality Of Life Shame Fear Low Self-Esteem Guilt Anger
Causes The full cause or causes of IBS remain unknown but it is often associated with: The digestive system becoming over-sensitive to certain foods, which can trigger the symptoms Stress.
How Many People Does It Affect? Estimated that around % of the population of Canada, UK & USA are suffering with IBS at any one time Up to 7,000,000 sufferers in Canada Up to 12,000,000 sufferers in the UK Up to 60,000,000 sufferers in the USA
Seeking Help Only about 40% of sufferers seek help from a physician or GP Around 75% of sufferers said they had searched online for a solution There is currently no formal medical treatment for this condition
What Can We Do To help? A LOT!! Hypnotherapy appears to be an effective long-term treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with sufferers feeling the benefits for at least five years, new research claims.
Research Research at Withington Hospital Hypnotherapy Unit, Manchester, UK 204 patients with IBS were monitored after undergoing gut-directed hypnotherapy Each patient recorded their symptoms, quality of life and levels of anxiety and stress before and after treatment.
Research Patients were assessed immediately afterwards, and then 6 years afterwards. 71% of participants reported a positive outcome Improvement in quality of life Decrease in levels of anxiety and depression Reduction in drugs used to manage the condition. Reduction in need to see doctor. Less than 10% of participants sought other treatments after trying hypnotherapy.
The Treatment In this particular trial the treatment consisted of approx 12 x 1 hour hypnotherapy sessions plus use of CD at home.
The Treatment Method (In this trial) The method used in this trial was a visualisation of the gut as a river. Patients suffering with constipation imagined rocks and boulders that needed removing; Patients with diarrhoea imagined the river as flowing too fast, needing the banks shored up.
Self-Directed Visualisation From my experience, visualisations are usually far more effective when the patient is allowed or encouraged to create their own imagery using the Go Inside Technique.
Example Of Self-Directed Visualisation Client was suffering anxiety over not being able to make it to the toilet on time, because would get sudden need to go, and be fearful of not being able to get in anywhere.
Example Of Self-Directed Visualisation This resulted in fear and anxiety about any situation in which he didn t know where he could go.
Example Of Self-Directed Visualisation I suggested to the client to imagine his gut and bowel system as being like a river that was flowing too quickly and could he go inside to have a look around to see what he felt needed to be there to improve the system
Example Of Self-Directed Visualisation He said, Traffic lights in my bowels to keep everything in there until there is somewhere I can go. As he said this & I asked him what that was now like & he showed immediate signs of relaxation and said, Calm, comfortable and in control - which became the mantra.
Example Of Self-Directed Visualisation I then took him through all the previous anxiety situations he had described, only this time asking him to tell me what he is doing differently. Switching the lights to red now to green now to red etc
Example Of Self-Directed Visualisation After going through all the anxiety situations, but now feeling more in control, he looked visibly relieved and able to relax.
Other Treatment Options Self-Directed Visualisation Analytical Approach To Assess Any Underlying Causes. Swish or Equivalent To Replace Anxiety Image (no control/humiliation) with in-control image. Letting Go Of The Fear
