1 February/March 2018 Page 1 This week I would like to highlight Michelle Scarberry. Michelle is our health tech/office clerk. She is the one who greets your children when they are their most vulnerable...sick or hurt. She also is the one who makes sure they are accounted for if they are not at school and sends you these newsletters every week. Even with all of these responsibilities, she still keeps a positive attitude and a smile on her face! Should your pick-up plans change during the school day please let the office know before 3pm, it can be difficult to track down students to pass along last-minute messages at the end of the day. From the Health Office: Flu (Influenza) season is here and we are beginning to see students miss school because of it. Many schools in our district have been hit hard this year. At Bennett we have been lucky -- It hasn't hit us as hard as others, but we want it to stay that way. Influenza is highly contagious and a list of supports to combat it are below. We ask that if your child isn't feeling well you consider keeping them home. Also, if your child has the symptoms of the flu, please let us know that in your call to us to excuse their absence. Our staff is working hard to make sure we are doing all that we can to stop the flu from spreading. Thank you for reminding your kids about how they can prevent the spreading of germs (resource below) and the importance of hand washing. continued on next page

How is influenza spread? Influenza is easily spread from person-to-person through the air by coughing or sneezing.

An infected person may spread influenza one day before having symptoms up to seven days after becoming ill.

Symptoms of influenza begin suddenly and include fever, headache, chills, body/muscle aches, extreme tiredness, dry cough, and sore throat. In addition to the respiratory symptoms students may also have nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Nausea and vomiting alone, often reported as the stomach flu, are often caused by other factors and are not influenza. How is influenza spread? Influenza is easily spread from person-to-person through the air by coughing or sneezing. Surfaces and hands contaminated with nose, mouth, or throat secretions can also spread influenza viruses. An infected person may spread influenza one day before having symptoms up to seven days after becoming ill. How is influenza treated? Antiviral medications are available by prescription that may reduce the length of illness; consult your health care provider. Measures may continued on next page

How do you control the spread? Annual flu vaccines are recommended for all persons 6 months of age and older, unless you have contraindication to the vaccine.

Teach your student to cover their noses and mouths with a tissue or their arm when coughing or sneezing. When using a tissue, dispose in a wastebasket and wash hands well afterwards.

Over-the-counter medications, when used as directed, may lessen fever, headache, and muscles aches. Please consult your medical provider to discuss the use of these medications. Make sure adults and children wash hands frequently and thoroughly. Use plenty of plain liquid soap and warm water. Avoid touching the eyes, mouth, or nose. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces frequently. Stay home during the first days of illness when symptoms are most severe, and the infection is most contagious. Staff and students should remain home until they have been fever free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication. continued on next page
