2 Use foot baths as prevention, not cure for spring lameness Cold, wet winter conditions will arrive soon, requiring farmers to monitor hoof condition continuously and rigorously trim and dip feet to prevent infection and digital dermatitis. Keeping hooves dry is the best way to prevent lameness, which, after mastitis, is the second highest reason for culling cows in the US. Farms where cows spend more time with their hooves exposed to wet surfaces should use the footbath more frequently, at least twice a day until conditions improve, says Alvara Garcia, Dairy Extension Specialist at South Dakota State University. By using footbaths and hoof trimming, the likelihood of infections can be reduced, he adds. During the first hour of exposure to water the hoof gains one-third of the total absorbed. Excessive water softens hooves, easing access of infectious agents such as the one responsible for hairy heel warts (digital dermatitis). This is one of the leading lameness causes with 62 and 49 per cent cases in bred heifers and cows, respectively. Despite the benefits of hoof trimming, 20 per cent of US dairies do not hoof-trim their cows. Although not a problem on some holdings, Mr. Garcia warns that failure to trim hooves results in uneven hoof growth and weight bearing issues that often compound stress on the feet and joints. Of course not all farms are the same, he adds. Holdings with a preponderance of wet surfaces predispose lameness and cattlemen should look to regularly use foot baths in these instances to safeguard against infection. Footbaths can be used as a bio security measure when introducing new cows, but remember they should be used as prevention rather than cure of an infectious lameness problem, says Mr. Garcia. In Europe, copper sulphate is banned, because of its residues in the environment. Formaldehyde on the other hand, is classified as being carcinogenic. Moreover, it doesn t work below 20 C and is highly irritant when splashing on the cows udder. CID LINES came up with an alternative: PEDILINE PRO. This footbath product is not carcinogenic. It works at temperatures below 20 C. It s not irritant to the skin and it s complying with the European regulations of biodegradation, being metal free. PEDILINE PRO is composed of glutaraldehyde (a non carcinogenic aldehyde) and different types of Quaternary Ammonia Compounds which, makes the product perform better in the presence of organic matter. Mr. Garcia reassures that hoof trimming and preventive footbaths are worthwhile in stopping digital dermatitis, responsible for 62 per cent of lameness in bred heifers in the USA. 5 Porcine Circovirus Disease: Is vaccination really worth it? Porcine Circovirus Disease (PCVD) is a common viral disease affecting pigs around the world. This dreaded disease leads to increased mortality and cull rates, poor growth rates, bigger variances at slaughter and ultimately, a reduction in profitability. Vaccines are highly effective at reducing the frequency and severity of PCVD. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatories help to control secondary infections often associated with PCVD, but do not protect herds from PCVD. Good farm management, all-in-all-out pig flow, proper cleaning and disinfection, and removal of affected pigs help to control the spread of disease. (1) In short, prevention is better than cure. Boehringer Ingelheim South Africa first imported its PCV2 vaccine Ingelvac CircoFLEX in 2008; PCVD was rife in the country at the time. The vaccine proved highly effective at reducing pig mortality and improving production and hence profitability. The vaccine protected many South African pig producers against severe losses. Similar results experienced around the world saw Ingelvac CircoFLEX become the most successful animal health vaccine of all time, protecting 1 billion pigs against PCV2 by A reminder of the pre-pcv2 vaccination times 5

6 Since the launch of the first PCV2 vaccine, the vaccination rate in South Africa and the rest of the world has increased significantly. Many farms have been vaccinating their piglets and have improved other control measures resulting in a consistent decline in PCV2 infections. However, a question that often arises is: What happens if we stop vaccinating? The answer is not straightforward and any effects are not always immediate. But considering that a number of studies have demonstrated that PCV2 vaccines are unable to eradicate the virus, one must consider that there will probably be an effect. (2) Many factors and specifics related to individual farms need to be considered. There are a number of studies that have demonstrated the implications of stopping PCV2 vaccination and two of these will be explored in this article. Based on yearly sales volumes (in comparison to all other vaccines in animal health) A field trial was done on a herd in Spain. Vaccination against PCV2 and M.hyo (Mycoplasma hyopneumonia), using the FLEXcombo (CircoFLEX and MycoFLEX), was well established. Stopping the CircoFLEX vaccination resulted in increased mortality particularly in the later growth stages which coincides with the time that PCV2 and M.hyo typically affect pigs. This is also the stage at which pigs are the most valuable. The graph below illustrates that the group in which vaccination was stopped had poorer growth, increased variation and higher mortality. When the vaccinated group was compared to the unvaccinated group, the return on investment (ROI) was calculated as 2.85:1 (i.e. for every euro invested in the vaccine they saved 2.85). (3) The graph below illustrates a field trial that was conducted in the USA on the disease dynamics of a PCV2-vaccinated herd over time. After 17 months of piglet vaccination with CircoFLEX, the vaccine was withheld from a group of 483 piglets. This resulted in combined cull and mortality rates as well as clinical signs similar to pre-pcv2 vaccination times. (4) 6

7 What if PCVD is not considered to be a threat? Another important question is, if PCVD doesn t appear to be a problem, is there an added advantage to vaccinating against PCV2 considering the global presence of the virus? Again, individual farm situations need to be taken into consideration. A number of studies have demonstrated that the advantages of vaccinating against PCV2 in animals without clinical signs of disease and one of these will be considered here. The effect of piglet vaccination in a herd without any PCVD signs was investigated in a Canadian field trial. The graph below illustrates that the vaccinated pigs had a 36g/day ADG advantage and 4.6% less mortalities than the unvaccinated pigs. The ROI of 5.9:1 was calculated from the combined advantage of heavier pigs, lower mortality and better carcass quality of the vaccinated group. It is important to note that an unexpected ileitis outbreak occurred during the trial. All pigs were immediately treated with antibiotics. There was, however, a large variation in how the pigs handled the outbreak. The unvaccinated pigs had a more than 5x higher mortality rate than the vaccinated pigs. (4) 7

8 In conclusion: PCV2 is present throughout the world. (1) Vaccination programs suppress viral levels to undetectable levels but are unable to eliminate PCV2 from a herd. (2) When vaccination is discontinued it has a negative impact on mortality, cull and weight gain as PCVD re-emerges. (5) (3) There are clear economic benefits to vaccinating pigs with PCV2 vaccines, possibly even in the absence of clinical signs of disease. (4) Considering all the possible negative consequences of discontinuing vaccination, it does appear that continued vaccination really is worth the investment. Tegnologie en meganika moet deesdae van die eerste oorwegings wees by die beplanning van kalfgrootmaakeenhede. Kalwers word in groepe geplaas en kan elkeen sy gedeelte melk gaan drink soos hulle lus voel; omdat elke porsie beperk is word daar geen melk vermors nie en kan dit ook nie oorspoel in die verkeerde maag nie. Die Calfmom kan ook die hoeveelheid melk aanpas soos die kalf daagliks groei, en dit selfs verminder om die kalf baie makliker te speen. Met die sagteware wat gebruik word kan enige afwyking van voeding baie vroeër opgetel word en die betrokke kalf behandel word voor dit te laat is. As gevolg van die feit dat inligting outomaties gestoor word, kan die inligting enige tyd van die dag gebruik word en is dit daarom baie meer toeganklik is. Dit beteken dat die boer ten volle betrokke kan wees by die Melk- en kalfgrootmaak proses Die Calfmom maak elke porsie vars aan en kan selfs produkte byvoeg soos nodig geag. 12 UK TRIP Our Lionel s Vet Semen sales team recently returned from the UK having toured as guests of our suppliers Cogent, the largest bull stud in the UK. Perhaps we didn t quite credit Cogent with the level of respect that they enjoy from both other Semen companies who choose to stand bulls at the Cogent stud, the trust their clients have in Cogent nor the level of commitment to their quality standards that we should have had. This trip blew us away in every respect and it came as a huge surprise to get an idea of who is behind this company. Day 1 The Stud is based in Chester and this is where our trip began. Situated on the West Coast in an area known for its history, Chester is an important agricultural hub with intensive arable complimented by a large cow population. Two bulls were paraded Asterix and Milo and we were privileged to observe the collection of Milo and subsequent processing something that not all visitors get to see. Cogent s lab is a 24hr a day, 360 day operation with the very latest and most expensive technology available. Standards are extremely high with multiple safe-guards to ensure a quality product. Literally they check, check and then check some more! We then proceeded to one of Cogents farms where we were extremely impressed by the Azure daughters in particular. Medium sized cows with fantastic udders and exceptional veination they really caught the eye! Heifers are raised off the farm and this is where we went to next. We noticed several points of interest here with heifers being raised from all the farms with minimal labour (4 people for 600 heifers), a diet of high protein and ad-lib wheat straw. Housing was well planned and we all got some ideas. Goldmines are starting to Milk across SA, and seems to produce what his proof promised. 13 In any company it helps to know who is behind it, their principles, the vision they have for the company as well as the backing the company enjoys. The Duke of Westminster, owner of Cogent, over 5500 acres of prime agricultural property in Chester, four entire villages and multiple property holdings country wide, Godfather to Prince William, and personal friend of the Queen is an agriculturalist at heart. He has backed farmers and his belief in the vital role that each of us play in this business sector is refreshing. The tour of his Estate silenced us with its magnificence what a place! Day 2 Dairy farming in the UK is different in many respects. On every farm we went to, there were always British Blue crossed calves in the pens. With this in mind we headed the following day to the Cromwell British Blue stud. What an amazing sight pens and pens of extreme cattle! Exceptionally muscled with almost unbelievable growth rates these cattle were a sight. Huge emphasis is placed on calving ease genetics and certainly the cattle we saw were light framed with quick growth rates and muscling ability. Following on from this we went to the Wilodge stud a highlight of the trip for most of us. Wilodge runs a pedigree Limousine stud in Shropshire. The muscling on these animals was something we all felt would be difficult to describe unless you have seen it yourself. A consistent breeding goal has resulted in exceptional animals displaying width, depth and double muscling that is hard to comprehend. They also produce suckler calves on the BB/Limo cross which can potentially realise up to 4500 sterling at 6 months old! We were fortunate to see progeny from Fastrac and Goldcard. Our following stop was Shraden Hereford stud. This family run integrated farm enterprise comprises the Hereford stud, free-range pigs and poultry, veggies and a deli/restaurant which markets their produce. Cattle are grazed on pasture with suckling calves supplemented with a maize based concentrate 13

14 and any animals not making the stud grade are fattened for their butchery. Certainly a business model to think about in an increasingly audited agricultural market place. Day 3. Technology is moving at such pace and so it was with some excitement we headed to Walford and North Shropshire College to view both their robotic milking system and their daughters of Tiergan and Paulo. A desire to offer a Degree with the latest technology as part of the Curriculum resulted in the decision to put the system in and has resulted in increased student numbers. Only the first 100 day cows are milked robotically and thereafter go to a regular Herringbone system. There have apparently been no problems switching the cows and certainly the cows were noticeably calm and content with cows going to be milked freely. Dairy manager Neil Ridgeway was hugely informative and interesting to chat with. Asterix had impressed us earlier in the week at Cogent and so it was fantastic to be able to view the Woodmarsh stud also in Shrewsbury. Welcomed by Mick a man passionate about genetics and the importance of cow families, the standard of cows we saw was impressive. Totally TMR and averaging 12500/305 lactation, these cows are not just pretty! Ably helped by his wife who is integral to the farm we had a great visit and left with confidence in the bulls they have bred. We viewed family of Talented, Metallic and Asterix. Variety was an impression our hosts wanted us to appreciate and complimented by a visit to the Wright Families Fourcrosses Jersey herd in Staffordshire. Considered to be one of the best Jersey herds in the UK, we viewed several EX-scored cows including F. Bomber Bambi (EX-95) dam of Cogents latest bull Stag. Cows are TMR based over 18l / day thereafter on pasture. No tour would be complete without a visit to a no-frills commercial farm who breeds cows for suitability to a system this one on pasture. Rangemore had three Milo daughters, two of whom were twins. These first calvers were uniformly small in stature, very black and had lovely neat udders. All of us felt that this bull would be ideal for many of our pasture clients. Day 4 We never imagined that we would see a 22yr Ayrshire cow - and in calf to boot, but that is what we found in amongst the impressive Hunnington herd. A herd with a reputation for tremendous longevity the cows were uniformly capacious with great strength. Our own Mr Ayrshire - Edmund Els was with us to share his opinion on the cows and highlight the practicality of this herd. The herd averages between l/lactation and an average of 8 lactations. 14

15 Here in South Africa tenanted farms are not common. The Reeds run their herd on Eastside farm in Bridgwater a TMR herd that was also a highlight for us. Numerous superb Twist daughters all with fantastic udders especially in the rear, medium sized, quiet cows with great strength and a stylish Asterix daughter were a highlight. They were really superb in a well run and impressive overall herd a credit to their hard working owner and the breeding ability of Twist! Many of our clients have expressed an interest in our British Friesians and so the organic farm Maundrills in Somerset was an interesting visit. Organic for the last 14 years and using a mix of Jersey, Holstein and Friesian this herd was an interesting stop. Smaller and stronger than a Holstein, these crosses are run on pasture with a herd average of 8160L and a calving interval of 380 days. All of us were interested by the principal of a 3 way-cross for our NZ based clients and the benefits as evidenced on this farm. For the last stop of the day we headed to Clinton Devon Estates on the coast of Devon. This herd is run on a system very similar to that in NZ with cows on pasture fulltime. Unfortunately the owner was unable to spend time with us but we were able to view daughters of Kestrel and Milo. Pastures were quite hilly and demonstrated the adaptability of the breed with a system very similar to ours except that there was one woman doing the milking on a 600 cow herd! Go Girl! The evening was spent with Neil Gregor a friend to many and now the Head Progeny advisor in the Southern area of the UK for Cogent / WWS. Neil confirmed our impressions of the bulls we saw being particularly complimentary of Twist and Asterix and highlighting their potential value in our herds. It is great to be able to call on him for his expertise and opinion and we look forward to keeping in contact with him and his evaluation of the Cogent Visions Sires progeny as they come through the system. Day 5 Having spent time viewing Milo daughters during the week we headed for the Wintersell herd, breeders of Milo. The Milo daughters we saw had a little more strength than the previous ones and similarly were predominantly black with nice neat udders. Again we all felt that this sire has the makings of an ideal pasture bull for us. We also saw more daughters of Twist a bull that breeds more of the same no matter the herd. London was our next stop! Our thanks go to Cogent and the farmers we visited. Unlike most of us these guys are completely handson, largely dependent on the participation of their wife s in the farm and universally welcoming. Their time was time taken from manual tasks and appreciated by all of us. Cogent is a company that prides itself on the quality of their product, the Genetics they have to offer and I know that we can offer their semen with absolute confidence! 15

Een van ons verteenwoordigers in die Suid-Kaap het GROOT sukses behaal met die gebruik van Lactatropin op een van sy kliënte se plaas in die Heidelberg Riversdale area. Johan vertel ons meer: Ons het Februarie 2013 Lactatropin begin gebruik op die plaas, soos gesien kan word op die grafiek hieronder. Met behulp van voldoende voeding en ook Lactatropin het hierdie plaas se gemiddelde melk geklim vanaf liter in Februarie tot liter in Junie Dit is n gemiddelde verbetering van 5.3 liter op sy stal gemiddeld. Die daling op die grafiek is as gevolg van kuilvoer wat op geraak het en ook baie nat omstandighede. Ons het met opdroog na diere gekyk en gevind dat die diere wat met Lactatropin gespuit is, in n baie beter kondisie was as die wat nie gespuit is nie. Die uiteinde was dat die beeste wat weer in melk kom, teen n hoër produksie in die stal inkom, soos gesien kan word in die grafiek vanaf November 2013 tot Maart In die area waar Lactatropin huidiglik in die veld gebruik word is die gemiddelde toename in melkproduksie 4.25 liter. Enige melkery kan Lactatropin gebruik en GROOT sukses behaal, mits daar voldoende voeding beskikbaar is! 17 Die Voordele Van Kruipvoeding vir Suiwelkalwers Geskryf deur: Steyn Pretorius Inleiding Verskalwers is die toekomstige melkkoeie van n suiwelboerdery. Daarom is dit uiters belangrik om die regte bestuur en voedingspraktyke toe te pas as dit kom by jong diere. Kruipvoeding hou verskeie voordele in as dit saam met melk en melkvervanger gevoer word. Hoekom is kruipvoeding belangrik? Na parturisie is die rumen van n kalf nog nie ten volle ontwikkel nie en besit die kalf nog nie die vermoë om kragvoer of ruvoer te verteer nie. Die kalf is so te sê monogastries totdat die rumen ontwikkel. Al het die kalf reeds 4 pense, word die rumen uitgesluit en voedingstowwe word verteer in die melkpens (abomasums.) Die reticular groove vorm n kanaal vanuit die slukderm na die melkpens. Die groef sal minder effektief word soos die rumen ontwikkel. In jong kalwers beslaan die rumen ongeveer 25% van die totale pens kapasiteit teenoor 80% in die volwasse herkouer. Die melkpens beslaan uit 60% in die jong kalf en 8% in die volwasse herkouer. Daar is twee uiters belangrike aspekte van n kalf se ontwikkeling. Die eerste is die inname van kolostrum wat passiewe immuniteit aan die kalf voorsien en die tweede is die oorgangsfase van n monogastriese dier tot n goed ontwikkelde ruminant. Hoe vroeër die kalf droë voer inneem, hoe vroeër kan die rumen ontwikkel. Hoe vinniger die rumen ontwikkel hoe vroeër kan die kalf gespeen word. Navorsing wys dat n kalf reeds oop 2 weke na geboorte die vermoë besit om te herkou as hulle vanaf geboorte reeds toegang het tot goeie kwaliteit droë voer. Kalwers kan suksesvol gespeen word as droë materiaal inname bo 500g DM per dag is. Met goeie kwaltiteit kruipvoeding kan n kalf so vroeg as 30 dae na geboorte gespeen word. Verskeie kruipvoere bevat medikamente om te help met die gesonde ontwikkeling van die kalf se spysverteringskanaal. Koksidiostate is een voorbeeld. Die gebruik van n koksidiostaat voorkom koksidiose wat verskeie verteringsprobleme in kalwers kan veroorsaak. Koksidiose beskadig die dermkanaal en belemmer ontwikkeling. Die beskadiging van die dermkanaal verminder verteerbaarheid en kan lei tot diarree en verlaagde aptyt. Sekere koksidistate kan ook as ionofore dien wat voeromset vebeter en lei na n verhoogde GDT.
