1 TOPIC: Infectious Disease NYS Standard 1 Personal Health and Fitness: Students will understand human growth and development and recognize the relationship between behaviors and healthy development. The will understand ways to promote health and prevent disease and will demonstrate and practice positive health behaviors. Objectives: Students will define and list the various types of pathogens, and they will understand how pathogens are transmitted. They will brainstorm various ways to prevent the spread of pathogens, and they will display proper disease prevention techniques such as handwashing and properly covering their mouths when coughing and sneezing. Duration: Two 45 minute class Grade Level: 8 Title: Jan 3 8:43 AM (1 of 15)

2 Procedures Procedure: Day One 1. Using Chapter 22, pp in the health text book, student will complete the vocabulary on the worksheet shown on slide #5. Review the correct answers with them having students come to the smart board and write in correct responses. 2. Go to slide # 7. Using worksheet #6 have students list and draw pictures of as many different kinds of pathogens they can find in the text book. 3. Using the smartboard, have students reveal the definition to pathogen and check their work by revealing the names of six different types of pathogens. Procedure: Day Two 1. Using Chapter 22, pp in the health text book, student will complete worksheet #8. Have students list and draw pictures of the ways infections are spread. Encourage the use of stick figures with those who are not gifted at art. 3. Using the smartboard and slide #9, have students move the manifying glass to expose the different descriptions of modes of transmission. 4. Go to slide #10 and review the human immune system with students. Then show them the video clip that is linked to this page. 5. Give students a copy of the worksheet shown in slide #11 and allow them time to list and draw pictures of various ways to prevent the spread of disease. When some students finish allow them to come up to the smart board and draw their examples on the smartboard page. 6. After students finish, go on to the slide #12 and show the video "Henry The Hand" which shows the importance of and the proper way to wash hands. 7. Slides #13 and #14 are reviewed with students by the teacher who then shows the importance of sneezing in one's sleeve vs. on one's hands using the video link on slide #15. 13 What's in a sneeze and cough, and why should you cover your mouth? When the sensitive tissues inside your nose are irritated, your nose tries to get rid of the irritation. A signal is sent to the muscles that help you breathe, and they suddenly contract. Air bursts from your lungs. Some of it exits through your nose, the rest through your mouth. It carries away the irritating substance. Andrew Davidhazy, Professor, Rochester Institute of Technology < But a lot of other stuff gets expelled too, like water vapour, water droplets, and mucus from your nose. This moisture may be full of microorganisms, and some of those may be unhealthy ones. This cloud of air and moisture can move as fast as 160 kilomtres per hour... as fast as hurricane winds! 14 Sneezing releases many particles into the air. Some of these particles can be passed to others and cause disease. Droplet pathogens present in water droplets (ex. sneeze, cough) The average sneeze travels 200 miles/hour and carries 10,000 to 100,000 microbes. An example of a pathogen spread via droplet is the influenza virus. Passing on a disease from one person to another happens in a number of ways. Droplets of moisture from the cough or sneeze of an infected person can contain pathogens <../glossary/index.html>. Inhaling droplets gives pathogens a point of entry into the body.
