1 Rapid needle alignment for localizing breast tumors Client: Dr. Frederick Kelcz Advisor: Dr. Beth Meyerand, Lonie Salkowski Date: February 6th to March 9th, 08 Team: Gopika Senthilkumar Kevin Fantl Colin Schrof Kari Borowski Alex Henry (Team Leader) (Communicator) (BWIG) (BSAC) (BPAG) Problem Statement Manual alignment of the needle by the physician during the localization process is often times inaccurate and requires multiple readjustments. This becomes both tedious for the physician and increases the length of time of the procedure. Our goal is to create a device that makes the needle localization process more efficient, ensures that the needle is always inserted accurately, and streamlines the process to decrease variability between technicians or facilities. In addition, our device will also easily integrate with the current practices, ensure safety of the patient, be reusable, and most importantly enhance the accuracy of the procedure. Last Week s Goals Discuss rejected patent and determine course of action Finalize Design 6 and print Summary of Team Role Accomplishments Kevin (Communicator ) Updated design Materials research for guide
2 Prepared and delivered preliminary presentation Edited and submitted various files for IRB submission Worked on preliminary deliverables Gopika (Team Leader) Wrote paper outline Printed prototypes Design updates Verified training Advisor updates Colin (BWIG) Uploaded team picture Progress report Uploaded website documents Preliminary presentation work Worked on preliminary deliverables Alex (BPAG) Prepared for and completed preliminary presentation Completed preliminary deliverables Worked on preliminary report Personal research for a phantom breast model Kari (BSAC) BSAC meeting Prepared for and completed preliminary presentation Worked on preliminary report Completed preliminary deliverables Summary of Design Accomplishments Modified the design of last semester s prototype to deepen the countersink, improve ergonomics, add mechanical advantage to closing device 3D printed the new design Begin to outline final paper Materials research and purchased initial test model
3 Bought a breast model Finalized post-procedure survey Completed preliminary presentation Completed preliminary deliverables This Week s Goals Evaluate breast model and explore other options Meet with client to show him current breast model Schedule when we will be able to go into the clinic to perform testing 3D print new, better cured device Project Difficulties As we enter the testing and product validation stage, we realize that our project will continue to redefine itself in the coming week. We must keep great communication with our team members, advisor, and client so that we can quickly and effectively unite our approach to this challenge. Our newest difficulty is selecting an appropriate phantom model for the localization testing. There are many design specifications that this model must meet, so the material and shape must be chosen carefully. We have purchased a synthetic breast model, but we worry that it will not be able to endure repeated procedures. Ideally, we would like a model that can be reused several times, so we will either have to find a new model or bolster the current one.
