Regulated Medical Waste Management and Proper Waste Segregation Nevada Nevada Arkansas Regulated Medical Waste Management and Proper Waste Segregation The regulations in this presentation are specific to the state of Nevada. For an overview of general regulations pertaining to regulated medical waste, refer to the training on MyStericycle.com under Required Training Biohazardous Waste Medical Waste Solutions.
Table of Contents Regulatory Authority Definitions Storage Container Markings... 7 Training
Regulatory Authority Nevada Division of Environmental Protection Solid Waste Branch Regulations Washoe County Nevada has adopted the US Dept. Of Transportation definition for regulated medical waste found in 49 CFR Part CFR Part 173 3
Regulatory Authority Nevada Regulations and Washoe County Regulations Nevada regulations do not require treatment of medical waste. Disposal in a permitted landfill according to approved practices is acceptable. However, until the waste has been either treated or disposed, it must be stored and collected according to the requirements of Nevada Administrative Code (NAC) (Note: the Washoe County District Health Dept. has infectious waste regulations which do require treatment before disposal.) There is no comprehensive federal regulatory program for the management of medical waste. The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has adopted regulations to limit workers' occupational exposure to blood and other body fluids which may pose a risk of infection by bloodborne pathogens. 4
Definitions RMW in Nevada (Infectious Waste) Nevada has adopted the US Dept. Of Transportation definition for regulated medical waste found in (49 CFR Part 173 ) Basically that definition includes such items as: Regulated medical waste means a waste or reusable material known to contain or suspected of containing an infectious substance including: - Waste generated in the research, diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of human beings or animals - The production or testing of biological products - Cultures and stocks of infectious agents and associated biologicals - Pathological waste - Sharps that have been used in animal or human patient care - Contaminated animal carcasses, body parts, and bedding of animals that were known to have been exposed to infectious agents during research 5
Storage Medical wastes must be stored: in watertight, tightly covered clearly labeled containers that are resistant to corrosion in a safe location inaccessible to the public In addition, medical wastes must be stored in cleanable containers with liners or in a manner approved by the solid waste management authority. 6
DOT Requirements - RMW Container Markings 7
Training Since Regulated Medical Waste contains sharps and potentially infectious substances, all affected employees are required to have initial and annual OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens training Stericycle can provide the necessary DOT training for your employees. Please contact your sales or customer service representative for details The transport of Regulated Medical Waste is regulated by the United States Department of Transportation as a hazardous material while it is in transport. All affected employees (those who perform the functions of either packaging or signing the shipping papers) must complete DOT hazardous materials training initially and every three years thereafter 8
Additional Information Thank you for your interest in the specific laws governing Regulated Medical Waste (Infectious Waste) in Nevada. Be sure to also check actual State/County website for further details and any possible changes to State regulations. If you have additional specific questions relating to waste segregation please feel free to Stericycle at 9
