What are Bloodborne Pathogens? Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms that carry bloodborne diseases including, but not limited to, Hepatitis B and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Hepatitis B Hepatitis B is a liver disease that results in infection caused by the Hepatitis B virus. Health effects can include: flu-like symptoms, fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, jaundice (yellowing of the skin/eyes),dark urine, clay-colored bowel movements, pain in muscles, joints and stomach. Chronic Hepatitis B results when the virus remains in the body and can lead to liver damage(cirrhosis), liver cancer, death. HIV HIV is a virus that attacks the body s immune system, causing the disease known as AIDS. Health effects include flu-like symptoms, fever, diarrhea, and fatigue. Infected individual will eventually develop AIDS and may develop AIDS related illnesses including neurological problems, cancer, and other opportunistic infections
All OVSD school buildings have an Exposure Control Plan. What is an Exposure Control Plan(ECP)? Outlines procedures to eliminate or minimize employee exposures to bloodborne pathogens(bbps). Outlines who is at risk for exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens Outlines Engineering Controls Outlines post exposure procedures Outlines Employee Training and record keeping A copy of the OVSD ECP is kept in each building s Health Suite and the plan is specific to each building.
Who is at risk for exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens? ALL OVSD EMPLOYEES ARE AT RISK OF BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN EXPOSURE. All OVSD employees who have been trained in use of Epipen Auto Injector All OVSD employees who may be a first responder to student illness or injury. All OVSD healthcare employees (Certified School Nurses, Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses).
Methods of controlling exposure to BBPs Universal Precautions Engineering Controls Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) Workplace Practices
Universal Precautions The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) defines Universal precautions as an approach to infection control to treat all human blood and certain human body fluids as if they were known to be infectious for HIV, HBV and other bloodborne pathogens, (Bloodborne Pathogens Standard 29 CFR (b) definitions). Also known as Standard Precautions. Universal precautions shall be used by all OVSD employees for all body fluids.
Engineering Controls Engineering Controls are safety devices, including safety medical devices, that prevent or reduce occupational exposure to BBPs. Examples of Controls: Sharps Containers Red Biohazard bags Personal Protective Equipment The Epinephrine Auto Injector/Epipen is a type of Engineering Control. The needle has a protective mechanism, which covers it after administration. This mechanism reduces the risk of an accidental needle stick to the person administering the medication.
Personal Protective Equipment(PPE) PPE is equipment used to protect employee from direct skin, eye or mucous membrane contact with blood or other body fluids. The following types of PPE are available to all OVSD employees: Disposable gloves Surgical masks Eye Protection Microshields PPE is located in Go bags and/or Go buckets in each classroom. PPE can also be obtained by contacting the Certified School Nurse or Building Administrator.
Workplace Practices Handwashing is required of all employees. Broken sharps should be picked up with a brush, dust pan, or tongs and disposed of as contaminated waste. Recapping, bending, or breaking needles is prohibited. If no alternative exists, recap using one-handed method or recapping devices. Hands-on training with needle devices is provided during annual Epinephrine Auto Injector Training. Additional training on use of needles is provided to employees designated as Trained Diabetes Personnel. All sharps should be disposed of in a puncture resistant, leak proof sharps container located in the Health Suites.
Post Exposure Procedures If an exposure occurs, immediately contact the Certified School Nurse or Building Administrator. Initial First Aid will be provided to exposed employee. An Accident Report and Sharps Injury Log will be completed. Post exposure treatment, counseling and evaluation is available through Workers Compensation(WC). Incident Report/Worker s Compensation packets for completion are available in the Health Suite.
Where to obtain Hepatitis B vaccine series The District will be providing an opportunity for all district staff to obtain the Hepatitis B series of vaccination during the work day. Immunizations will be administered by the Detweiler Group and will be provided in the Middle School Library. Please refer to the information ed to you in June for instructions on obtaining the Hepatitis B series vaccinations through work.
Hepatitis B Vaccination Verification Form Information about the Hepatitis B vaccination availability was sent to you in an in June. The included a Hepatitis B Vaccination Verification Form, which must be completed by all staff, even if you are choosing not to receive the vaccinations. The completed form must be signed and returned to your school nurse by August 7, Additionally, if you are opting to receive the vaccination series, you need to complete a brief survey at to help our provider plan for the clinic. Please complete this survey as soon as possible.
Benefits and availability of the Hepatitis B vaccine. Information on the Hepatitis B vaccination series is available in the Health Suite in each district building. Vaccine information can be obtained at and
