2 Global Partnership Program Under Canada s leadership, the G8 launched the Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction at the 2002 G8 Summit in Kananaskis We commit ourselves to prevent terrorists, or those that harbour them, from acquiring or developing nuclear, chemical, radiological and biological weapons; missiles; and related materials, equipment and technology. G8 committed up to US $20B over 10 years Canada = $1 billion ~$120 million for Biological nonproliferation 2
3 Kyrgyz Republic Contemporary biological proliferation challenges and threats: numerous biological facilities store and work on dangerous pathogens that are endemic in Kyrgyzstan diseases of terrorist concern, e.g. plague, anthrax, FMD and brucella facilities are in states of serious decay Cooperation with Canada is strengthening Kyrgyz capacity to combat Infectious Diseases 3
