3 Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever Future Generali Health As of Mid August, the WHO (World Health Organization) reports: 2240 Cases and 1229 Deaths In Nigeria, there were 15 cases and 4 deaths, all in Lagos. The fatality rate so far has been between 60% and 90 %. Most of the cases and deaths occurred in: Liberia Sierra Leone Guinea Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever (Ebola HF) is one of numerous Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers. It is a severe, often fatal disease in humans and nonhuman primates (such as monkeys, gorillas, and chimpanzees). Ebola HF is caused by infection with a virus of the family Filoviridae, genus Ebolavirus. When infection occurs, symptoms usually begin abruptly. The first Ebolavirus species was discovered in 1976 in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo near the Ebola River. Since then, outbreaks have appeared sporadically. There are five identified subspecies of Ebolavirus. Four of the five have caused disease in humans: Ebola virus (Zaire ebolavirus); Sudan virus (Sudan ebolavirus); Taï Forest virus (Taï Forest ebolavirus, formerly Côte d Ivoire ebolavirus); and Bundibugyo virus (Bundibugyo ebolavirus). The fifth, Reston virus (Reston ebolavirus), has caused disease in nonhuman primates, but not in humans. The natural reservoir host of ebolaviruses remains unknown. However, on the basis of available evidence and the nature of similar viruses, researchers believe that the virus is zoonotic (animal-borne) with bats being the most likely reservoir. Four of the five subtypes occur in an animal host native to Africa. A host of similar species is probably associated with Reston virus, which was isolated from infected cynomolgous monkeys imported to the United States and Italy from the Philippines. Several workers in the Philippines and in US holding facility outbreaks became infected with the virus, but did not become ill. Transmission Because the natural reservoir of ebolaviruses has not yet been proven, the manner in which the virus first appears in a human at the start of an outbreak is unknown. However, researchers have hypothesized that the first patient becomes infected through contact with an infected animal. When an infection does occur in humans, there are several ways in which the virus can be transmitted to others. These include: Direct contact with the blood or secretions of an infected person Exposure to objects (such as needles) that have been contaminated with infected secretions Page 1

Future Generali Health The viruses that cause Ebola HF are often spread through families and friends because they come in close contact with infectious secretions when caring for ill persons. During outbreaks of Ebola HF, the disease can spread quickly within health care settings (such as a clinic or hospital). Exposure to Ebola viruses can occur in health care settings where hospital staff are not wearing appropriate protective equipment, such as masks, gowns, and gloves. Proper cleaning and disposal of instruments, such as needles and syringes, is also important. If instruments are not disposable, they must be sterilized before being used again. Without adequate sterilization of the instruments, virus transmission can continue and amplify an outbreak. Signs and Symptoms Symptoms of Ebola HF includes: Some patients may experience: Fever Headache Joint and muscle aches Weakness Diarrhea Vomiting Stomach pain Lack of appetite A Rash Red Eyes Hiccups Cough Sore throat Chest pain Difficulty breathing Difficulty swallowing Bleeding inside and outside of the body General Recommendations Preventive Measures The activities most at risk involve direct contact with sick or dead people, all body fluids, or with animals. Avoid all physical contacts (including handshakes) with all people Frequently wash hands with soap or alcohol based solutions Do not buy or eat bush meat Avoid contact with people who are sick and for whom Ebola fever has not been excluded as a diagnosis and do not visit or seek care at facilities where Ebola patients are treated. For people in contact with the patients, the use of long gloves, masks, gowns, shoe covers and goggles or face shields is mandatory to avoid transmission of the virus through the skin or the mucous membranes. But diet, smoking and drinking alcohol also have an effect on dental health. A Healthy Diet What you eat and drink can cause tooth decay, so a healthy diet is important for your teeth. A healthy diet contains foods from different groups, including fruit and vegetables, starchy foods (rice, pasta, bread and potatoes), some protein-rich food (such as fish, meat, eggs and lentils) and some dairy foods. A glass of fruit juice counts towards your five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, but it also contains sugar. When you have sugary food or drink with a meal, it can be less damaging to your teeth than if you eat or drink it on its own. Try to drink fruit juice only at mealtimes. Smokers' Teeth Smoking can prevent you from having gleaming, healthy teeth. Smoking turns your teeth yellow, causes bad breath and increases your risk of gum disease, breathing problems and lung cancer. If you smoke 20 or more cigarettes a day, you're six times more likely to develop mouth cancer than someone who doesn't smoke. So giving up smoking is important if you want to look and feel better. Sugar Limiting the amount of sugar you eat and drink is important to prevent tooth decay. Have sugary food and drink only at mealtimes and don't eat sugary snacks between meals. Most of the sugars we eat and drink are contained in processed and ready-made food and drinks. These include: sweets, chocolate, cakes and biscuits buns, pastries and fruit pies sponge puddings and other puddings table sugar added to food or drinks sugary breakfast cereals jams, marmalades and honey ice cream dried fruit or fruit in syrup syrups and sweet sauces sugary drinks, including soft drinks, fizzy drinks, milk drinks and alcoholic drinks A glass of fruit juice counts towards your five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, but it also contains sugar. Alcohol and Tooth Decay Excessive consumption of alcohol has been linked to an increased risk of developing mouth cancer. According to Cancer Research UK, 75-80% of mouth cancer patients say they frequently drink alcohol. Alcohol can also erode the enamel on the outside of your teeth, leading to decay. If this happens, you may need to go to the dentist for a filling. Page 3

Wine, cigarette smoke, tea and coffee can all discolor teeth. Keep these to a minimum or cut them out completely to stop your teeth from becoming stained.
