1 NEWSLETTER OF THE NORTH DAKOTA EARLY HEARING DETECTION & INTERVENTION PROGRAM Volume 5, Issue 3 Summer 2012 Changes for NDEHDI Hello! It is with mixed emotions that I write to let you know I will be leaving my post as ND EHDI Program Director effective August 1, I have accepted a position with our local special education unit as their Early Childhood Coordinator. As I reflect back to 2005 when I began working with EHDI, I am proud of what ND has accomplished in such a short time! Early hearing detection has truly become a standard of care within our hospitals across the state. In addition, the level of collaboration between the medical and education communities is quite remarkable. Thank you to all who have supported ND EHDI efforts throughout the years and I wish the very best for each of you in the years to come! Project Director, Wendy Thomas. Sincerely, Wendy Thomas Games for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Kids to Play Together By Julie Wetzel Games can serve as an ice-breaker and help lay the groundwork for better and richer relationships between deaf and hearing children. For deaf kids it is an opportunity to interact with hearing kids within a structure and learn how better to communicate with the greater hearing world. For hearing kids, it's an opportunity to be exposed to kids that communicate in a different way and to pick up sign language naturally. It broadens their experience, perhaps making them more accepting of anyone that is "different" and teaches a different mode of communication. Check out Pages 3 and 5 for a list of games. 2 Age 3-5 Age 2-3 Page 2 Chimes Hospital Spotlight: Altru Health By Sue Routledge ND EHDI staff would like to spotlight Altru Health and their community s hearing health support network in Grand Forks, ND. Recently, our EHDI team visited Altru to meet with hospital staff and area providers. Attendees included Altru hospital nursery staff, a pediatrician, and audiologists; Early Interventionists representing the Right Track Program and Part C/Infant Development; the ND Dual Sensory Project and Family Voices of ND. We were also pleased to have Minnesota represented including the MN Department of Health s EHDI team as well as members of MN Family Voices, MN Hands and Voices, and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Service group. The community visit provided an ideal venue to meet face to face, review Altru s current hearing program, and discuss each partner s role to assure infants receive timely and compete hearing healthcare in the greater Grand Forks area. Altru Health s birth hearing screening and follow-up team s level of compassion for what they do is evident and commendable. Reported data indicates 100% of infants available to receive a hearing screen were screened prior to discharge and 98% of infants needing to return received additional follow-up screening. Noteworthy as well is the rate at which their audiological staff report and communicate using ND EHDI s online reporting system, OZ esp. Altru s birth screening program raises the bar in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. Combining impressive outpatient rescreen rates, timely audiological services, and diligent efforts to reach families, Altru is an excellent example of exceptional hearing care in North Dakota. ND EHDI would like to thank Altru Health s infant hearing care staff and surrounding providers for their dedication, teamwork and perseverance! Congratulations on a job well done! 3 Volume 4, Issue 2 Page 3 Games for Kids 1. Hide the Thing (for two or more players) A small object is hid by one player while the others are in another room or in another part of the yard. With no speaking, searchers for the hidden object are given clues to the location with the signing of "hot" or "cold". Of course, the closer the searcher is to the object, the "hotter" they are. 2. Hide-n-Seek 3. Red Light/Green Light One person is designated as it and plays the part of the stop light. The other kids line up about 20 feet away from it. When the stoplight person turns their back to the other players, this is "green light" and they all race towards the stoplight, hoping to be the first to touch the stoplight person before they turn around. When the stoplight person turns around, this is "red light" and all the players moving forward must freeze. If the stoplight sees movement, they point at the mover, who must back up and return to the starting point, before the stoplight turns around for "green light." The first one to touch the stoplight becomes the stoplight and a new game commences. 4. Freeze Tag Get a group of friends together. Decide who is it." Chase your friends if you are "it" until you tag them. Once a friend has been tagged, that person must stop running and remain in the frozen position they were in when they were tagged. Unfreeze a frozen friend if you are not "it" by touching them as you run by. Another variation of this game is that you must crawl through the frozen friend's legs to unfreeze them. Continue the game until everyone is frozen. The last person to be tagged becomes "it." 5. Puzzles 6. Follow the leader 7. War (classic card game for two players) Divide a deck of playing cards in half and then each player turns over their top card. The higher card wins the battle and the lower card. If the cards are equal, then both parties throw down three cards faced down and face up a fourth. The card of the higher value wins the whole pot of cards on the table for this battle. These battles go on until one players loses all their cards. 8. Rock, Paper, Scissors, Hand Grenade (for two players) This should be a natural for game deaf kids. Two players face off, with one hand behind the back and the other counting "1, 2, 3", the players bring front the hidden hand in the shape of one of (Continued on page 5)

5 Volume 4, Issue 2 Page 5 News from ND Hands & Voices The ND Hands & Voices family support group is looking for committee members and board members. For more information, contact Kim at ndhandsandvoices@gmail.com or call (Continued from page 3) the following: Rock ("A" handshape), Paper (flat palm), Scissors ("V" handshape) and Hand Grenade (fist with thumb up). Rock beats Scissors, Scissors beats Paper and Hand Grenade, Paper beats Rock, Hand Grenade beats Rock and Paper. Repeat as many times as agreed upon to arrive at a winner. 9. Dingo Like Bingo but better. In groups of no more than four and a deck of cards for each group, divide the 52 cards into 4 sets of 13. Each player gets a set of 13 cards. For a group of less than 4 put aside however many sets are unnecessary. Then have the Dingo leader with their own deck and after a good shuffle, pull out a card and show it. Anyone who has that same card, say an 8 of Hearts, can remove their card from their active set. The first person who has removed all 13 cards stands or raises their arm and fingerspells, "Dingo!" Square or 4-Square A traditional elementary school recess game. All you need is a bouncing ball, two squares painted on the cement ground and three kids or for bigger groups 4 squares and 5 kids. A server starts the game by striking a big rubber ball into another player's square. That player must allow only one bounce of the ball in their square before returning to the server (or another square if play with 4). The game goes on until the ball bounces twice in a square or a player hits the ball out of a square all together. If the server errs, he or she is knocked out and the other play moves into their square and takes over the role of server and stays "king of the mountain" until he or she errs. 11. Hang Man (word game) All you need are two people, a piece of paper and pencil (or chalkboard and chalk) and you're ready to play. One person has a mystery word in mind and then draws a line for each letter in the mystery word, then the other player guess letters (hopefully using the manual alphabet). For each wrong letter, a body part is drawn into a noose. When the "hung man" is fully rendered (usually head, eyes, nose, mouth, trunk, arms and legs) the guesser loses the game. If the guesser gets the word correctly, they become the mystery word writer. 12. Fort Building Prop sturdy sofa cushions near a sofa or bed. Use chairs if necessary, to prop up cushions. Build the roof by draping sheets or blankets over the cushions. Add stuffed animals for play.
6 (810) What is EHDI? EHDI (Early Hearing Detection & Intervention) programs are located in states and are designed to identify infants with hearing loss by universal screening. This allows identified infants to be enrolled in an early intervention program. These intervention programs are designed to help facilitate the development of visual and/or spoken language and the cognitive (thinking) skills needed to succeed academically and socially. Chime In! Check out the most updated ND EHDI website at for information or to meet the staff. If you have questions, find broken links or typos, or have suggestions, please let us know. ND EHDI is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration; Award No. 2H61MC
