1 NEWSLETTER OF THE NORTH DAKOTA EARLY HEARING DETECTION & INTERVENTION PROGRAM Volume 6, Issue 2 Spring 2013 Director s Message: NICHQ Update By Neil Scharpe ND EHDI is funded by the Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA). One of HRSA s requirements is for all EHDI programs to participate in a quality improvement learning ND EHDI NICHQ Team left to right: Irene Forsman collaborative led by the National (Project Officer), Janet DesGeorges, Neil Scharpe, Initiative for Children s Healthcare Tricia Nechedom, Nicole Swartwout, Jerrica Maxon, Quality (NICHQ). The ND Core Team and Darcy Severson. participated in a Learning Session in St. Louis in January along with 16 other states and territories. NICHQ promotes the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle for quality improvement initiatives. Our team s focus has been to reduce our loss to follow-up and to assure infants with a diagnosed hearing loss are referred to early intervention for hearing care follow-up. In each case, data drives the process, and without it, we are unable to determine if a change is an improvement or not. Several small tests of change were planned and implemented showing dramatic results with parents bringing their infant back for additional testing after a failed birth screen. The interaction with other professionals who have the same passion and purpose was invaluable. We have learned that the Plan-Do-Study-Act approach can/ should be applied to many situations, not just the EHDI program. Our ND EHDI NICHQ team will be attending one more face-to-face session in May that will hopefully bring us to the point that we can begin to replicate a proven improvement process across the state. 2 Page 2 Chimes Early Intervention Spotlight: Parent Infant Program By Roxy Hayhurst ND EHDI would like to spotlight the Parent Infant Program. In February, the EHDI staff was asked to provide training in Devils Lake to the North Dakota statewide Parent Infant Program (PIP). Their continued efforts and dedication in providing the best service is commendable! Along with an overview of the ND EHDI program, the training involved the two different views of the Early Intervention module in the OZesp statewide tracking system. The Early Intervention/PIP flowchart was also discussed along with a demonstration of the steps/process. Keep up the good work! ND EHDI PIP training February 4th, Quarterly Reports Going Green By Thomas Orluck In the past, the ND EHDI Quarterly Hearing Care reports (Birth Admission Screening and Follow-up Reports) were disseminated in hard paper format via snail mail to hospital faculty and nursery staff. Starting in 2013, reports will be going green with an electronic version being sent to those whose is/has been made available. The decision to go electronic reduces cost and saves a tree or two. Be on the watch for the new electronic format in the next rounds of quarterly reports! To assure you are on to receive the new format, please contact Thomas Orluck at thomas.orluck@minotstateu.edu or at ND EHDI, to assure your is up-to-date and included for the next quarterly reporting. May is Better Hearing & Speech Month By Emily Rodacker The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association promotes Better Hearing & Speech throughout the month of May. Many communities and organizations coordinate special activities and events to increase awareness and celebrate better hearing and speech. Visit ND EHDI on Facebook and tell us how you re celebrating! On Page 5 of this Chimes, you will find a coloring sheet you can copy and handout. For additional downloadable materials, visit

3 Volume 6, Issue 2 Page 3 Spotlight: Spirit Lake Early Childhood Tracking, Fort Totten ND By Sue Routledge ND EHDI staff would like to spotlight Spirit Lake s Early Childhood Tracking program for their continued partnership with ND EHDI and promotion of infant hearing healthcare. Recent management and staff changes within the Spirit Lake Tracking office afforded ND EHDI staff the opportunity to travel to Spirit Lake, meet their new staff, and discuss future collaborative efforts. It was also an ideal venue allowing EHDI staff to provide a one-on-one OZ esp training with new personnel. The Spirit Lake Early Childhood Tracking program provides a wide variety of services to children within their area. These services include infant hearing support and healthcare. Mr. Robert Old Rock, the program s new director, indicated that while he is introducing changes to increase their program s effectiveness and proficiency he will continue to support the partnership with ND EHDI. He has designated Ms. Lynn Johnson, Pediatric RN, as the new ND EHDI OZ esp data entry person. Our ND EHDI team welcomes our newest allies at the Spirit Lake Early Childhood Tracking program. Working together, we can assure complete, timely infant hearing healthcare! 6 (810) What is EHDI? EHDI (Early Hearing Detection & Intervention) programs are located in states and are designed to identify infants with hearing loss by universal screening. This allows identified infants to be enrolled in an early intervention program. These intervention programs are designed to help facilitate the development of visual and/or spoken language and the cognitive (thinking) skills needed to succeed academically and socially. Chime In! Check out the most updated ND EHDI website at for information or to meet the staff. If you have questions, find broken links or typos, or have suggestions, please let us know. ND EHDI is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administra on; Award No. 2H61MC
