This booklet provides simple explanations about the various education & support programs offered in Tasmania. It provides an Australia-wide community support service offering rehabilitation and help for Australia s hearing impaired. Brief Outline of Services: Better Hearing Australia s services include speech-reading classes, tinnitus support and information on TV devices. 4

Brief Outline of Services: The Department of Education is responsible for providing appropriate services, resources and support to deaf and hearing impaired children from age of diagnosis to the end of senior secondary schooling throughout the state. Time available: Determined from each individual child s needs. Selection Criteria: All children with a diagnosed hearing loss who are referred to the service will be assessed. Ongoing service is determined by: ] A hearing loss of greater than 60dB in their better ear as measured by an audiologist at 500, 1000 and 2000 Hertz. ] Functioning in the following areas is also considered audition, language, literacy, academics and social/ emotional. Level of parental involvement: Early intervention services are implemented using an individual family plan, developed with the parents. Ongoing parental input is encouraged and welcomed throughout schooling. Fees: No fees are charged for this service the services are provided through the Department of Education, Tasmania. 5

Brief Outline of Basic Philosophy: To provide high quality services which empower deaf and hard of hearing Tasmanians to achieve their goals and participate fully in the community. Brief Outline of Services: Tasdeaf offers the following services: ] Interpreting booking service ] Case management of families, children and adults ] Support to people with hearing loss ] Information and trial of technology (assistive listening devices) to assist hard of hearing ] Referrals to appropriate services within Tasmania ] Information sessions to the broader community on hearing loss ] Auslan classes ] Deaf awareness and cultural workshop programs ] Community education workshops ] Play group for toddlers ] Social group for adults ] Promoting positive achievements i.e. golf days ] Hard of hearing support group ] Technology workshops to other service providers. Time available: Office hours are Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.30pm. Tasdeaf has an emergency after hours number that can be obtained from their website. Selection Criteria: Tasdeaf is available to assist anyone who wishes to obtain information. Access to the case management service is priority and demand based. Level of parental involvement: People are welcome to become part of Tasdeaf through board membership or by becoming a member. Frequency of group meetings: The board of management meets once a month. The Senior Citizens group meets every Tuesday at Tasdeaf from 11.00am to 3.00pm. The Meniere support group meets on the second Wednesday of every month from 10.30am to 11.00am The Hard of Hearing support group meets on the second Wednesday of every month from 11.15am to 12.30pm. Fees: Membership to Tasdeaf is $15 per year. 6

Brief Outline of Services: The following services are provided ] Universal new born hearing screening program ] Diagnostic assessment of infants referred from the universal screening program ] Family support for families when an infant is diagnosed with a permanent hearing loss. ] The non medical aspects of cochlear implant assessment and rehabilitation. Cochlear implant surgery is carried out at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne Services are provided in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie. All appointments are organised from the Hobart office Time available: Our office hours are Monday Friday 9:00 4:30 PM Selection Criteria: ] All infants are offered a hearing screen within 3 months of age ] Cochlear implant rehabilitation is provided to all children and adults with cochlear implants, regardless of where the implant surgery took place ] A medical referral is not required for an initial appointment to discuss the potential benefits of cochlear implantation.
