2 The Tasdeaf team have been busy relocating our reception area, to make better use of our building and the space we have. The community room now has a large noticeboard for members to share information, please drop by and have a look, all new information as it arrives at our Hobart office, will be put there for members to see this way information doesn t get lost. Opening hours at Hobart will extend shortly, allowing more member access to workers, we will take it in turn to start and finish early, plus start and finish late. More details to follow. Hearing Awareness Week (25th and 26th August), Gearing up Expo (more info on page 4), National Week of Deaf People (17th 23rd October) are all activities being planned for. Another date for your diary is our AGM which is on Saturday 24 th October, with guest speaker Jacqui Petrusma, again at UTAS campus s across the state. Tasdeaf is working with another organisation, ACD (Association of Children with Disability) to provide Returning Officer for Board elections. Look out soon for your opportunity to vote on the potential new Tasdeaf logo. Atholl and I had a very warm welcome at Dr Syntax on Friday 7 th August, and I have met with members interested in bowling and golf, and Tasdeaf is developing a stronger working relationship with Deaf Sports Australia, through a partnership agreement. SCC are working Christmas xmas raffle, more details to follow*, and the Tasdeaf Board would like member nominations to join a fundraising sub-committee for Tasdeaf. to mary.gays@tasdeaf.org.au or SMS for more information on any of the above. 3 Hi, Again this is becoming a regular catch cry isn t it? another month has flown by and we are into August! The third SGM which was held on July 25 th went very well despite the hiccups for the North West members who were delayed for some time due to the building being locked out and having to wait for a security guard to drive down and let them in the rooms were open, but not the building. For the members who were unable to attend, all the recommended amendments and changes to the Tasdeaf constitution which was presented to the Board by David Owen and the constitution action sub-committee were unanimously accepted by members present at the SGM via locations in the South, North and North West. The updated constitution has now been sent to the regulatory authority body ACNC for lodgment. Thanks to everyone who came along, it was very much appreciated. In relation to one of the questions that arose during the end of the last SGM which was about membership, yes we are still in the process of reviewing the current membership structure and there will be some changes coming through in the near future. Dealing with three SGM s over the last six months has taken an enormous amount of resources, time and effort by the Board, Mary and her team. One of the main objectives that we said at the first SGM back in March has been completed (updating the constitution), we can now focus on the other issues raised - the membership structure being one of them. The next main event for Tasdeaf will be the AGM in October where we hope to see as many members as possible as it is always good to catch up with everyone. We would love to hear of any stories or feedback from our members - if you have any interesting news that you wish to share with the Tasdeaf community, please pass on the information to the staff at Tasdeaf and every effort will be made to include in the next newsletter. 6 What do you enjoy the most about your job? I enjoy working with good people who are dedicated to helping others to enjoy quality of life. What is your role at Tasdeaf? My role at TasDeaf is to manage the sale of assistive listening devices and hearing protection, conduct of fee for service industry hearing and noise testing and worker noise awareness training. I also do community hearing tests and noise/hearing awareness education when the opportunities and funding allow. How long have you worked at Tasdeaf? I have been working here since 2006, when I started as the National Relay Service representative for Tasmania. What do you like to do on your days off? I often landscape gardening on my property, riding my motorcycle and marrying people (I am also a very busy marriage celebrant). What is your favourite travel spot? to date, the Norwegian Fjords 185 What celebrity do people think you look like? I often get mistaken for Dick Smith

Also, a big thank you to Tony Bain for volunteering his time to fix the second hand lawn mower that TDS recently purchased. We are considering how we can provide better services to more of our members by being open at extended times. We will provide more details shortly. 12 Eyelines began in 16 and has since grown to 13 stores providing optical services to 24 locations across Tasmania, employing over 50 people and serving the optical needs of over 35,000 Tasmanian s every year. Louisa Sahetapy is an Optometrist at our Rosny store. She is originally from Singapore and graduated with a Diploma in Optometry in Louisa then moved to Brisbane and graduated with honours from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in She became therapeutically qualified in 200. Before moving to Tasmania, Louisa worked at the Brisbane Eye Clinic assisting the Ophthalmologists and running the Low Vision Clinic. She has a great passion in outreach programs and has been to Vietnam, Cambodia and Ethiopia. She enjoys all aspects of Optometry but in particular diabetes, macula degeneration, anterior eye diseases, low vision and contact lens fitting, and will ensure you receive a thorough eye examination. Louisa has completed a community course in Auslan (Australian sign language) and offers a Deaf friendly optometry service at the Rosny Eyelines store
