The National BAHA Registry Convened by Sue Archbold, Ear Foundation Supported by Oticon Medical and Cochlear Europe
What is The National BAHA Registry? The registry has been developed so we can put a figure on the number of BAHA fittings nationwide (and eventually, worldwide!). Other information collected will include usage and indications for fitting of the BAHA. 2
Why do we need a National BAHA Registry? There is currently no information available regarding the number and outcomes of BAHA fittings This Registry will provide evidence of clinical cost effectiveness Funding for BAHAs around the country varies, therefore this research is fundamental to secure the future funding of BAHAs. 3
Number of Patients in The National BAHA Registry (September 2013) The total number of patients in the Registry is now 2065 from 9 centres. 4
Which Centres are Participating? Birmingham Children's Hospital Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Cambridge Chester Manchester General Manchester Royal Newcastle Upon Tyne Norwich Nottingham This graph shows the increase in centres participating, is your centre taking part? 5
Where does the data come from? 6
Age Range 7
Current Usage of BAHA How long do BAHA users wear their hearing aid? 8
Waiting time from surgery to fitting of the BAHA processor How long do patients wait from surgery to BAHA fitting? 9
Why people have the BAHA This graph shows the main reasons for having a BAHA. 10
Aetiology 11
Unilateral or Bilateral Hearing Loss? Do BAHA Users have a unilateral or bilateral hearing loss? N.B: Unilateral: Hearing Loss in One Ear Bilateral: Hearing Loss in Both Ears 12
Distribution of Age at Fitting This graph shows age when fitted with the BAHA. 13
Do Patients with a Unilateral Hearing Loss wear a BAHA? Out of 2065 patients, 552 patients have a hearing loss on one side. 65% of patients with unilateral hearing loss wear a BAHA, whereas the remaining 35% do not. 14
Do Bilateral Hearing Loss Patients have Bilateral BAHAs? Yes! This graph shows only 20% of patients with bilateral hearing loss have 2 BAHAs fitted. The rest either just have one BAHA or are unaided (or have conventional BTEs). 15
Suffering in silence the child denied a 3,000 hearing aid This story featured in the Metro Newspaper on 23 rd May Missing out: Ellie Sanders, whose rare condition has left her with just one ear, with her mother, Kelly, (Picture: SWNS) A girl born with one ear is being denied a hearing aid because of where she lives. Ellie Sanders, four, has the rare condition hemifacial microsomia which hinders the development of the lower half of her face. She begins her first term at infant school this September and needs a device so she can hear her teachers and communicate with other pupils. Her mother Kelly, 31, applied for a bone anchored hearing aid (Baha) implant which transmits sound directly through the skull to the inner ear. But she says Ellie is the victim of a postcode lottery with two NHS trusts arguing about who should pay the 3,000 bill. Other families in the same situation have been offered a Baha, said Mrs Sanders from Truro, Cornwall. They don t have to go crawling around to other trusts. I don t know how long this process is going to take. It s just so unclear where we stand. Other people seem to have great support. Ellie struggles now in a nursery setting. After numerous consultations Kelly first tried unsuccessfully to get a Baha from the former Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Primary Care Trust which later became NHS Kernow. Since April a new national commissioning policy means patients have the same access to treatment, irrespective of where they live in the country, said an NHS England spokesman. Source: 16
