10 The 4 Simple Rules

11 Rule 1. Self Calibration All Morita apex locators self-calibrate when they are turned on, you must ensure that the ends of the probe cord are not touching any metal objects prior to switching the unit on

12 Rule 2. Pulp chamber must be bone dry!

13 Rule 3. No metal contact to file

14 Rule 4. File must be snug in the apical third of the canal

15 Trouble Shooting 1 1 If blood, conductive solutions such as sodium hypochlorite are present in the pulp chamber an electrical short could occur. Morita apex locators are set up to display a false positive hence the display will read APEX! If this occurs, stop, dry the pulp chamber and start from where you left off 2 When the pulp chamber is clear of conductive solutions, proceed with treatment 2

16 Trouble Shooting: A Root Canal with a Large Apical Foramen A root canal that has an exceptionally large apical foramen due to a lesion or incomplete development cannot be accurately measured: the results will show a shorter measurement than the actual length.

17 Trouble Shooting: A Broken Crown If the crown of the tooth is broken and a section of the gingival tissue intrudes into the cavity surrounding the canal opening, contact between the gingival tissue and the file will result in electrical leakage and an accurate measurement cannot be obtained. In this case, build up the tooth with a suitable material to insulate the gingival tissue.

18 Trouble Shooting: A Fractured Tooth/Branch Canal A fractured tooth or branch canal will cause electrical leakage and an accurate measurement cannot be obtained.

19 Trouble Shooting: Re-Treatment of a Root Filled with Gutta Percha In this case, the gutta percha must be completely removed before a measurement is attempted. First pass a small file all the way through the apical foramen and then fill the root canal with a saline before taking the measurement. Gutta Percha

20 Trouble Shooting: A File Touching a Crown or Metal Restoration Accurate measurement can not be obtained if the file touches a metal crown or metal restoration. In this case, widen the opening at the top of the crown so that the file will not touch any metal before taking the measurement.

21 Trouble Shooting: Cutting Debris on the Tooth/Pulp from the Canal Thoroughly remove all cutting debris on the tooth. Thoroughly remove all the pulpal tissue inside the canal, otherwise an accurate measurement cannot be made.

22 Trouble Shooting: Caries Contacting Gingival Tissue In this case, electrical leakage via the carious lesion to the gingival tissue will make it impossible to obtain an accurate measurement.

23 Trouble Shooting: A Blocked Canal The meter will not move if the canal is blocked. Open a glide path all the way to the apical constriction prior to taking the measurement.

24 Trouble Shooting: An Extremely Dry Canal If the canal is extremely dry, the meter may not move until it is very close to the apex. In this case, try moistening the canal with saline.
