1 N.C. Dental Opioid Prescribing Course: UPDATE 2019 (for 2020 Dental License Renewal) I am pleased to announce that once again I will be offering the Opioid Epidemic Update Course for 2019 approved by the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners and sponsored by the Isothermal Dental Society. Completion of this course in the calendar year 2019 will satisfy the N. C. State Board of Dental Examiners requirement to fulfill the N.C. General Assembly General Statute for 2020 dental license renewal, requiring all dentists who have a DEA license to take a course on the abuse of controlled substances. (Note: If you do not have a DEA license you may take the course but it is not required for license renewal). As you know, 2017 was the first year the N.C. General Assembly required dentists seeking dental license renewal in North Carolina to take a course on opioid prescription writing pursuant to House Bill 97. This bill requires at least a one-hour opioid CE course for controlled substance prescribing practices and controlled substance prescribing for pain management. Since House Bill 97 is a general statute in the N. C. Law, dentists are required to take a course on opioid prescription writing each year until further notice. I will present this course specific to our dental practices as an update focusing on new and relevant changes to opioid prescribing and entertain clinical questions that we face as practitioners. This year I have added 3 new cities for the course (Greensboro, Greenville and the Concord/Kannapolis area) in addition to the previous cities where I have presented the course (Charlotte, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, Hickory, Asheville, Wilmington, Fayetteville and Jacksonville). I also want to make this course available to all dental study clubs in North Carolina in 2019 for dental license renewal in Please consider scheduling a time in 2019 for your dental study club to help your members obtain this requirement for dental license renewal in 2020! I will come to your local study club in your town and teach the course at your convenience. Please contact me as soon as possible to schedule for 2019 so that I may be able to meet your request as to the month, day and time you would like to have the course taught at your dental study club.
