To make your experience here at the school as pleasant and convenience as possible, the following information is provided and should answer any questions you have regarding the upcoming examination. See directions below. From Westchester, the Airport area & the South Bay: Take the San Diego (405) Freeway North. Exit at Jefferson Blvd. Turn right onto Jefferson and proceed straight crossing Sepulveda. The street name will change to Playa. Where Playa curves North about 1/4 mile further it becomes Overland Ave. Proceed north on Overland past two stop signs. The next light is Freshman Drive. Turn right onto the campus. 2 P a g e

3 From Westwood, Santa Monica & the San Fernando Valley: Take the San Diego (405) Freeway south. Exit at Jefferson Blvd. Turn left onto Jefferson and proceed straight crossing Sepulveda. The street name will change to Playa. Where Playa curves North about 1/4 mile farther, it becomes Overland Ave. Proceed North on Overland past two stop signs. The next light is Freshman Drive. Turn right onto the campus. From Downtown Los Angeles: Take the Santa Monica (10) Freeway west. Exit at Overland Ave. Turn left, and proceed South on Overland about 5 miles. Continue past Jefferson Blvd. and make a left turn at the second signal, Freshman Drive. From Ladera Heights & Inglewood: Take Slauson west to Hannum (by Fox Hills Mall, 1 block east of Sepulveda) and turn right. Make a right at Playa. Playa curves north and becomes Overland Ave. Proceed north on Overland past two stop signs. The next light is Freshman Drive. Turn right onto the campus. From La Cienega: Turn west on to Rodeo. Rodeo becomes Jefferson Blvd. Then, turn left on to College Blvd. which brings you on to the campus. Visitor Parking; Student / Guest Parking Students and guests may park in the South Parking Structure and Overflow Lot (Lot 8A) which are adjacent to the Fine Arts Complex. Day permits can be purchased on sight; however, parking dispensing permits ONLY accept cash ($2.00). 4 Restaurants: Many restaurants are located within a few miles of West LA College. The area is richly diverse and you can find many types of cuisines throughout the area. Patient Screening: West LA College cannot provide Patients for Candidates and the facility will not be available for Patient screenings. Radiographs: Our facility is a digital site; all Candidates will need to bring radiographs in a printout form. Candidates needing to use the Radiology clinic are required to follow West LA College s infection control policies and to wear proper clinic attire. Staff will be available to facilitate and answer questions about the equipment. The Candidate will be responsible for exposing, scanning and mounting their patient s images. Radiology will only be available to the Candidates during the exam on an emergency basis. Radiographs will cost $5.00 for each radiograph including a printout. Local Anesthetic Support: No practitioner will be available to provide local anesthesia. Dental Supplies and Equipment: The Candidate is responsible for supplying the following items: protective eye wear polishing handpiece cavitron (ultrasonic) inserts blue, black & red pens syringes needles scrubs lab coats blood pressure equipment 4 P a g e

5 The following disposable supplies will be provided by West LA College: surface disinfectant paper towels soap headrest covers autoclave bags small and large trash bags nonlatex gloves (small, medium, large & X-large) styrofoam instrument trays tray covers standard saliva ejectors air/water syringe tips Patient napkins disposable bib clips drinking cups clear barrier tape face masks facial tissue 2X2 gauze squares cotton swabs antimicrobial mouthwash topical anesthetic local anesthetic(s) prophy paste pre-rinse & cups Schwartz Perio Retriever Clinic Facility Information: Each Candidate will be assigned a numbered operatory in the Dental Hygiene Clinic. The number assigned should correspond to the Candidate s numbered I.D. badge which will be issued at orientation. Each operatory is equipped with a dental chair. A delivery unit equipped with an air/water syringe and an operator s stool. Any equipment malfunctions should be reported immediately to the Chief Examiner. Handpiece and Prophy Angle Hookups: All units are from the manufacturer A-Dec, using a 4-hole connector for handpiece and prophy angle. Candidates will have the option to rent a polishing kit (handpiece, prophy angle, prophy paste) for a fee of $ Payment must be made in cash or personal check (payable to DH Trust Fund ). Candidate must inform facility up to 48 hours from the date of the exam via to Cha-Zette Smith smithci@wlac.edue or Andrea Blanco: Blancoaa@wlac.edu. Sonic/Ultrasonic Devices: All units are equipped with hookups for ultrasonic units (power and water). The facility has magnetostrictive (SWERV3 Hu-Friedy) and piezo (Symmetry IQ 3000 Hu-Friedy) ultrasonic scaler available to rent for a fee of $25.00 per unit (inserts are not included). Payment must be paid in cash or check (payable to DH Trust Fund ). Candidate must inform facility up to 48 hours from the date of the exam via to Andrea Blanco: Blancoaa@wlac.edu. Sterilization: Sterilization area will close at 4:30pm each day, only for those candidates that need to retake exam. Facility infection control protocol states that instruments opened and/or used during the exam will need to be transported in a plastic container with lid out of the facility. Candidates cannot carry instruments on paper or plastic bag, wrapped on paper, or wrapped on aluminum foil. 5 P a g e

6 Patients are not allowed to handle candidate s used /contaminated instruments. Infection Control: Surface Asepsis: Only the surface disinfecting solution provided in the West Los Angeles College Dental Hygiene Clinic is to be used in the clinic. Other brands of disinfectant, either purchased elsewhere or obtained as samples, are not to be used, as they may contain ingredients that may deteriorate the clinic furniture and equipment. Any surfaces (horizontal or vertical) within 3 feet of the patient s mouth must be considered contaminated after providing treatment that produces splatter therefore, cabinet doors, drawers, and instrument kits must remain closed during treatment. However, only surfaces that are touched must be cleaned and disinfected (with approved disinfectant only) or disposable covers changed between patients. Sharps Disposal: Used needles are to be disposed of in the appropriate puncture resistant containers located in the clinic area. Used needles should not be purposefully bent or broken after use. Needles must be recapped only by using needle capping protective devise or using the scoop technique. Empty anesthetic cartridges (no drugs or blood) can be disposed in the regular trash. Anesthetic cartridges with left over drugs should be disposed in a RED infection waste puncture resistant container. Disposable needles, syringes, scalpel blades o other sharp items and instruments must be placed into sharps containers for disposal as close as possible at each cubicle Emergency Equipment: See the clinic floor plan where oxygen (O 2 ) and emergency kits (E.K.) are located. Medical Emergency Protocol: The School Coordinator will be the Emergency Director until the outside paramedics are present. The dental hygiene receptionist will be the direct link to the on-campus emergency line (4314 or 4315). The Emergency Director will contact the campus sheriff who will determine whether L.A. County Fire/Ambulance/Paramedics is to be called prior to the arrival of the on-campus emergency team. Candidates who are not involved directly with the emergency will continue their clinical examination. 6 P a g e

7 Exposure Incident for Bloodborne Pathogens: Needle stick with a contaminated needle, puncture wound from a contaminated sharp dental instrument, contact between potentially infectious blood, tissues, or other body fluids and mucous membranes of eye, nose, mouth or non-intact skin (i.e. exposed skin that is chapped, abraded or shows signs of dermatitis) are considered as an exposure incident. See the School Coordinator and refer to the WLAC Dental Hygiene Infection Control/Hazard Policy Manual for more detailed instructions and the form. 7 P a g e
