4 EDUCATIONAL SERVICES MAY Spring Advisory Committee Meetin~ORTLAND COMMUI\,i) COLLl Joint Dental Hygiene/Assisting & Lab. Tech's. Thursday May 18th, :00 pm / LRC Room #204 Gary Smith introduced Anne Jackson, RDH, Ed M, as our "NEW" Department Chairman. Anne shared the "outcome" of the recent Western Regional College Accreditation just completed by PCC. Dr. Bremner shared with everyone some of the types of questions and comments put to Advisory members by the site team. Anne shared the Biography on Dr. Lenore Robertson that was presented at the "retirement dinner" for those employees retiring this year. She said that approximately 57+ people were leaving, and that due to the large number, Human Resources was unable to advertise for all the positions open. Therefore, a temporary (180 day) contract will be issues to a now "part-time person" within our own hygiene department for 1 year. Advertisement for a permanent full time Lead Instructor will be advertised for next year. BREAKOUT SESSION (Dental Assisting Dept.) In attendance: Dr. Jim Cain - Chairman, Pam Rutherford, Winnie Alcover, Judith Hollibaugh, Georgia Rascol, Nancy Deimling. 1. Information was shared with all advisory members as to the incoming class for the school year. Samples of the Orientation packet were distributed and they were asked to read through the Student Handbook and feel free to make comments next fall when we meet again. 2. Packets were handed out to all members reflecting the changes in (DA 110) Clinical Procedures I, (DA 111) Clinical Procedures Lab I, (DA 112) Clinical Procedures II, (DA 113) Clinical Procedures Lab II (DA 114) Clinical Procedures III, and (DA 115) Clinical Procedures Lab III.
5 Dental Hygiene Advisory Committee Meeting May 18,1995 r Minutes Present: Dr. Fred Bremner, Coralie Russell, SharOll Williams, Anne Jackson General Meeting Minutes Representatives from all three Dental Sciences Programs were in attendance. Gary Smith introduced Anne Jackson as the new administrator of the Dental Sciences Department. Ms. Jackson shared the results of the college accreditation with the members and thanked Dr. Fred Bremner and Ms. Sally Duyck for attending the group session for college-wide advisory committee members on very short notice. They represented the dental programs well and Fred Bremner shared his impressions of the session with the rest of the members. Dr. LaNore Robertson's retirement biography was circulated and the group was updated on the status of the dental hygiene instructor position which is currently open. Interviews are being conducted the week of May 22 in hopes of filling the position as soon as possible. Breakout sessions were scheduled to allow each program to discuss sections of curriculum in preparation for the dental accreditation in Members were asked to examine curriculum for inconsistancies, duplication, outdated content and sequencing. Dental Hygiene Meeting Minutes Review of curriculum continued with the second year sequence, Dental Hygiene Theory and Clinical Practice courses examined. The content is heavily weighted toward assessment and treatment of periodontal cases. Committee members contributed useful information on current concepts in the areas of ultrasonics, gingival curretage and realistic expectations for entry level skills. The department representative shared plans for giving competency tests at various stages of the student's training for use in the assessment process and, also, as a means of maintaining instructor consistancy in the clinical skills evaluation process. There are also ongoing efforts to equip the clinic with ultrasonic scalers with the goal of one unit/student. Sharon Williams, a recent graduate, suggested that students need more opportunity for observing practicing hygienists in sites away from the campus. The possibility of increasing rotations to other sites or moving them to a time earlier in the course sequence will be discussed at the next faculty meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 9 pm. The next meeting will be scheduled in Fall of 1995 to continue the review of curriculum.
