VetPro 1000 VETERINARY DENTISTRY Veterinary dentistry, in many practices, remains an unglamorous cousin to real veterinary surgery. In fact good dental health contributes hugely to any pet s well being. Veterinary dentistry should also be making a significant contribution to the financial well being of any practice. Dentistry is one of the few areas where there is potential for expansion. A brief examination of the mouth of most pets will reveal teeth which need attention. Owners are very familiar with the concept of routine check ups and dental work. Dental equipment is not hugely expensive when compared to much other capital equipment and unlike many other practice investments dental equipment quickly pays for itself. All veterinary practices providing dental services should have access to an ultrasonic scaler plus a unit with slow speed and high speed handpieces for polishing and tooth sectioning during extraction. Ideally a dental x-ray unit could be added to this, as around 70% of a tooth is below the bone crest, therefore invisible without good radiographs. Within this section of the catalogue you will find a range of dental equipment from a simple piezo ultrasonic scaler to the new fully featured Midmark machine. Some dental units are supplied with integrated suction driven by the venturi effect using compressed air. In our experience this type of suction is very hungry on air necessitating a large, expensive compressor. In addition the nature of the suction tubes of venturi type are difficult to clean and sterilise. Stand alone suction units are inexpensive and much more efficient plus they can be used elsewhere in the clinic. See Chapter 21 page 420. Air Driven Dental Units To obtain the truly high speeds required for drilling and burring an air driven dental unit is necessary. Veterinary Instrumentation can supply two levels of air driven dental machines. The Midmark VetPro 1000 is state of the art with exclusive oil-free technology, whilst the Veterinary Instrumentation Mini Cart is a straightforward unit containing all the essentials of an air driven dental machine. Both are offered as a complete set up for cutting and polishing but can be modified by the addition of further handpieces and accessories. 5 12 DENTAL MACHINES VI Mini Cart VI Mini Cart The tray style top is large (400mm x 300mm, 16 x 12 ) and manufactured from 316 stainless steel for easy cleaning. There is plenty of room for instruments, scalers and other dental materials. The tray has a lip to prevent items rolling off onto the floor. Magnetic Bur Zone The tray has a nice lip to retain elevators and burs etc but the front left hand corner is magnetised to attract and keep all your burs and scaler tips in one place. Pressurised Water Outlet for Scalers For your convenience to the rear of the unit there is a water outlet which is connected up to the pressurised water cooling system of the Mini Cart. Simply plug in your scaler. No more pump up bottles!! Supplied as a complete package the Veterinary Instrumentation Mini Cart includes all the essential elements for a veterinary air unit. Made in the UK to our specification and incorporating a Bambi medical standard compressor. 7 12 DENTAL MACHINES Low Speed Motor Straight Nose Cone Running with low speed (up to 22,000rpm) and high torque, this air motor is used to drive several dental accessories e.g. straight nose cone, prophy heads and the latch head. The motor has a speed limiter feature, while forward and reverse are controlled by a collar at the base of the motor. This combination is used to cut rabbit teeth and drill holes in bone. In addition HP burs may be used in the straight nose in spinal procedures. 6,000rpm is the recommended maximum speed for prophy cups. If using an air driven unit we advise the 4:1 reduction straight nose cone. If using an electric micromotor the 1:1 may be used but turn the maximum speed down to 6,000rpm. Running with high speed and low torque this handpiece is designed to remove tooth or bone as part of extraction or repair technique. Only Friction Grip (FG) burs fit the high speed. Fine water jets cool the bur. The fibre optic version illuminates the operative area with a brilliant cold light. BA handpieces have a 1 year warranty, Midmark 6 months. All high speed hanpieces we supply have a Midwest fitting.nb no warranty covers burs stuck in the handpiece. To avoid this, the bur must be removed from the head between every case, and ideally should be replaced with a new one. Blunt burs not only damage teeth, they also cause expensive damage to high speed turbines which will not be covered under warranty. The 1:1 attachment pushes directly onto the low speed motor and transmits actual motor speed to the head fitting (it has a blue band). The head may be used as a prophy polisher with use of P465 latch prophy cups or as a contra angle drill with the use of RA burs. The contra angle head offers a higher torque than the high speed. The speed is limited to 25,000rpm. A range of contra burs is available as bur kit D752. Use RA prefix when ordering packs of burs. See page :1 ATTACHMENT AND CONTRA ANGLE (LATCH) HEAD BA101 1:1 Attachment and Contra Angle (Latch) Head The 4:1 attachment gears down the low speed motor by 4 times. This should be set to 6000rpm. It has a very high torque which is best for polishing teeth. It usually has a green band and is used to drive prophy heads. Prophy cups are used in conjunction with prophy paste to polish teeth following scaling. Soft prophy cups are best as they create less heat and flare better under the gumline with less pressure. Failure to polish will result in a rapid build up of new plaque. Screw In Prophy Head Far fewer problems with hair. Snap On Prophy Head Widely used but has some problems in veterinary dentistry. 8 DENTAL MACHINES 12 Oscillating Prophy Head Options Rabbit Option (Shown on straight nose cone - not included) Developed for human dentistry to combat the risk of HIV the disposable prophy head is surprisingly cheap and minimises the risk of FeLV and FIV transmission. The oscillating action means there is no heat build-up on the tooth surface and snagging on muzzle hair is minimal. Soft prophy cups as supplied on these heads should be used as they produce less heat and flare better under the gumline with less pressure. The oscillating prophy head fits the straight nose cone. To achieve the correct running speed use the 4:1 reduction with air equipment or the 1:1 with micromotors. Adjust the running speed to 6000rpm on either system. We strongly recommend the use of fine grade prophy paste for general polishing after scaling, as this will produce the smoothest surface and reduce abrasion on the enamel. Medium and coarse are used for heavy staining in human dentistry, and always followed with a final, fine polish to give a good finish. Individual paste cups are recommended to maintain hygiene. The best method is the use of side cutting burs. Our Rabbit Bur Kit includes two of each of the most useful handpiece burs which fit the 1:1 Straight Nose Cone. They are housed in a custom made stainless block which also has holes for your favourite friction grip burs for the high speed. To minimise damage to the cheek and tongue, a Soft Tissue Protector is highly recommended. The Soft Tissue Protector and Burs were developed by David Crossley. Dog and cat enamel is thin and easily damaged. 11 12 DENTAL MACHINES Introduction It is possible to scale and polish using only hand instruments. It is, however, extremely time consuming. Teeth must be polished after scaling or plaque and tartar will quickly reform. Ultrasonic Scalers Ultrasonic scalers work by delivering high frequency vibrations to a metal tip. The vibration may be generated by a variety of mechanisms: Sonic. Slow and inefficient, often reaching less than 10,000Hz Magneto restrictive (cavitron type). The tip is vibrated by multiple layered metal strips and a magnetic field. Typically their type generates a lot of heat which requires a lot of cooling water Hz. Piezo. The movement at the tip is generated by applying a current across a crystal. Typically uses less water. Ferrite Rod. The tip movement is generated by an electrical field around a ferrite rod. This system is capable of producing higher frequencies up to 42,000Hz. Veterinary Instrumentation stock Piezo and Ferrite Rod Types (im ). We think these are most appropriate for veterinary use. Please note that all Ultrasonic Scalers should be used with care as inappropriate use will result in damage to enamel.all scaler inserts should be autoclaved after every patient, to avoid efficiently passing periodontal pathogens and retroviruses on to new patients. It reduces bur cutting time, cleans the tubes of the unit and mouth of the patient. Also disguises bad odours. The small pump is unobtrusive, about the size of a pack of playing cards, and the bottle will stand on the benchtop next to the scaler unit.
