2 Childsmile Programme Childsmile National Programme Aim: To improve the oral health of children and reduce inequalities in both dental health and access to dental services. Four Main Elements: Antenatal Practice Core Schools and Nurseries (Fluoride Varnish) Combines Population + Targeted Approach

4 Antenatal Programme NHS GG&C NHS ORAL HEALTH STRATEGY (2005) NHS GG&C MATERNITY STRATEGY( ) Maternal Oral Health Risk Factors: Periodontal Disease Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes include: Pre Term Births (Tonelli, 2008) Low Birth Weights Pre Eclampsia (Contreras et al, 2006) Maternal influence on children (Kumar, 2009) OHD Strategy for Pregnant Women and Families: Staff Training Oral Health Packs/Promotion Parenting Classes Vulnerable Pregnant Women
5 Childsmile Core Promotes a holistic approach to healthy living and teaches children an important life skill. Oral health pack given to children in 1st year of life, at age 3 (2 packs), 4 (2 packs) and 5 (1 pack) Total OH packs distributed in academic year 2010/ ,421 All nursery schools (local authority and private) invited to participate in daily supervised brushing programme Supported by OHE teams and OHD training officers. 304 Schools 22,563 children targeted (P1 and P2) 489 Nurseries 34,334 children targeted
6 Childsmile School & Nursery (Fluoride Varnish) Childsmile School Programme is a National Dental Prevention Programme aimed at school Children aged from 3 years old. It takes the form of twice yearly application of Fluoride Varnish, applied by 7 EDDN Childsmile FV Teams in NHSGGC, using 4 Childsmile vans. Schools The Childsmile School's Fluoride Varnish Programme commenced in April out of 304 Primary Schools across NHSGG&C participate in the programme. Academic Year 2009/2010 (p1 and p2) - Target FV applications: 4378 Actual FV applications: 2086 (48%) Academic Year 2010/2011 (p1, p2, p3) Target FV applications: 23,786 Actual FV applications: 13,478 (57%) Academic Year 2011/2012, Sept - Dec 2011 (p1,p2,p3,p4) Target FV applications: 15,338 Actual FV applications: 10,362 (68%) Nursery The Childsmile Nursery Programme was launched in February out of 489 nurseries across NHSGG&C participate in the programme. Academic Year 2010/2011, Feb June 2011 Target FV applications: 5759 Actual FV applications: 2839 (49%) Academic Year 2011/2012, Sept Dec 2011 Target FV applications: 4704 Actual FV applications: 2653 (56%)
7 Childsmile Practice It is being developed to provide a universally accessible child-centred NHS dental service by raising parental awareness of good oral health behaviours and increasing the provision of oral health promotion and clinical prevention within dental primary care. From 1st October 2011, the Childsmile Practice programme payments were incorporated into the Statement of Dental Remuneration (SDR). This means that all GDP practices (249) within NHS GG&C can deliver Childsmile Practice activities. 19 CSDS Clinics in NHSGGC are also delivering Childsmile interventions. 8 NHS GG&C - Childsmile Practice Executive Summary, Childsmile Integrated Monitoring Report (July Sept 2011) As at Sept 2011, Children from NHSGGC were enrolled in Childsmile Practice 5,588 children attended a Childsmile Practice during Jan June 2011 In 6% (384) of appointments, the children failed to attend The failed to attend rate was highest in SIMD 1 at 8%, SIMD 2 at 6%, SIMD 3 at 5%, SIMD 4 at 4% and SIMD 5 at 2%.
