3 Introduction It is recognised that prevention of ill health and reducing health inequalities can be achieved by increasing health improvement knowledge and skills as widely as possible. One of the most effective methods to secure health improvement of local populations is to enable organisations and communities to gain skills to deliver health enhancing activities. It is essential that we harness every opportunity across all agencies to engage with individuals and groups to address our key 21 st century public health challenges. Renfrewshire Health Improvement Team is committed to delivering a local, high quality and relevant learning and education programme which is detailed in this document. Links to other learning and education opportunities are also noted and accessible via the links below: NHSGGC elearning Calendar Public Health Resource Unit (PHRU) Learning NHS Health Scotland elearning Health Behaviour Change (HBC) introduces approaches and encourages practitioners to develop their brief negotiation skills to support individuals to address specific health and wellbeing needs. 4 Addictions Drug Awareness This training will offer basic drug awareness as well as looking at practical information and resources for workers to develop their own sessions. ½ Day - Youth Workers - Teachers Vicky Ledgerwood Tel: Victoria.Ledgerwood@ggc.scot.nhs.uk Alcohol, Drugs and Youth Work Training This training has been developed with the aim of enhancing the knowledge and confidence of Youth Workers in discussing drug and alcohol related issues with young people. The Training also aims to build the skills of Youth Workers in responding confidently and appropriately to substance misuse issues as they arise in the course of their work including working with young people who may be misusing substances, and, managing possible substance misuse incidents. 2 x full days or can be split into 4 x ½ day/evening sessions - Youth Workers - Teachers Vicky Ledgerwood Tel: Victoria.Ledgerwood@ggc.scot.nhs.uk
5 Alcohol Brief Interventions (ABI) This training will help identify people drinking hazardously/ harmfully and support them to reduce their alcohol consumption. The training will aid understanding of the impact of drinking excessively and the impact on health. Brief Interventions are not appropriate for those drinkers who are alcohol dependent. 6 Breast Cancer Breast Cancer Awareness and Screening This training provides information about signs, symptoms of breast cancer and the importance of breast awareness. Courses are run to equip staff/carers with the knowledge, skills and confidence to deliver this health message in the local community. One hour Staff groups and general public. Maggi Boyd Tel:
7 Gender Based Violence Basic Awareness Domestic Abuse (BADA) Training The aim of the training is to build a solid understanding of the nature and the scope of domestic abuse as a gender based violence (GBV) and its impact on those who experience it, providing delegates with the confidence and the knowledge to deal with the issue in their work setting. Forthcoming Dates 1 Full Day Contact Christine Hanton for forthcoming dates Registration is between 8:45am and 9:15am with training starting at 9:15am prompt. Sensitive Routine Enquiry This is a skills based training that equips practitioners to consider gender-based abuse as part of their routine assessment. - Explain the context and rationale for routine enquiry of domestic abuse in various settings - Define the health impact of domestic abuse and potential implications for healthcare outcomes - Demonstrate the knowledge, confidence and skills to conduct routine enquiry of domestic abuse within community settings - Respond safely and sensitively to disclosure and where to access appropriate support and guidance for both self and women accessing the service Full or half day depending on staff group. can be adapted to suit service area in discussion with GBV Lead Forthcoming Dates - Health Visitors, Staff Nurses, School Nurses, AHP s, RES teams and District Nurses. 8 Maternal and Child Health Breastfeeding Welcome Award The Breastfeeding Welcome Award (BFWA) is given to public places in recognition of their approach to welcoming breastfeeding women. The training session equips teams or organisations with the awareness, skills and knowledge to promote a welcoming environment and support, promote and protect breastfeeding in the community 2 hours Any private, statutory or voluntary organisation that has a facility which is open to the public and wishes to become a Breastfeeding Welcome establishment. Irene Carswell Tel: Irene.Carswell@ggc.scot.nhs.uk Breastfeeding Friendly Nurseries The Breastfeeding Friendly Nurseries programme aims to promote cultural change by helping nurseries create an environment where breastfeeding is seen as a normal way to feed infants. The training session prepares staff to promote, protect and support breastfeeding. This programme is available to all nurseries who wish to achieve the Breastfeeding Friendly Nurseries award. Training is open to all nurseries within Renfrewshire aiming to become a Breastfeeding Friendly Establishment. Preparation time plus 2 hours face to face training Irene Carswell Tel: Irene.Carswell@ggc.scot.nhs.uk Play@Home Play@Home is a physical activity programme for babies and young children. The training is offered to anyone working or volunteering in this sector to enable them to confidently promote and utilise the Play@Home resource with children and families. 2 hours The training is offered to practitioners from Health, Local Authorities or the Voluntary Sector where they have experience of childcare, early education, physical activity or health promotion. 11 Sexual Health Growing up, relationships and sexual health workshops To raise awareness: - with parents about the importance of their role as educators on this topic. - of the support and programme available The training is for parents who have children under the age of 12. Workshops available in your local area. Just text or phone to find out more information to Sexual Health Training Training provided by NHSGGC Senior Training Officer and offers delegates in-depth training which can cover all aspects of sexual (Youth) health including STIs, contraception, services, the law, media influences, sexual orientation, developing sexual health work with young people and issues around social networking and internet safety amongst other things. Training can be tailored to meet a particular staff group's needs. 2 Days - Youth Workers - Teachers Laurel Stevens on or Laurel.Stevens@ggc.scot.nhs.uk Basic Sexual Health Training This training would provide delegates with the necessary knowledge to discuss issues with young people. It would be recommended that delegates attended the 2 day session (above) also. 12 Tobacco Reducing children s exposure to second hand smoke To introduce participants to NHSGGC Smoking in the Home Campaign and to increase awareness about the effects of second hand smoke particularly to children s health. To equip participants with the knowledge and skills to help them undertake brief interventions with parents/carers to help reduce children s exposure to second hand smoke inside and outside the home To familiarise with the Five Point Plan that can be used with parents/carers when undertaking brief interventions aimed at reducing the effect of second-hand smoke in the home. 3 hours Staff working directly with parents of young children or expectant mothers i.e. Midwives, Health Visitors, Nursery Nurses Alan Curley Tel: Alan.Curley@ggc.scot.nhs.uk Raising the Issue Participants will gain an awareness of the purpose, benefits and process of raising the issue of smoking and delivering brief advice.
