2 SCOTTISH DENTAL PRACTICE BOARD FUTURE VACANCIES MEMORANDUM TO NHS: 2003 PCA(D)12 1. This Memorandum seeks expressions of interest from dentists wishing to serve as members of the Scottish Dental Practice Board (SDPB). Background 2. In order to create a pool of dentists suitable for appointment as members of the SDPB the Memorandum to NHS: 2000 PCA(D)11, issued on 21 August 2000, sought expressions of interest from dentists wishing to be considered for appointment. As it has been 3 years since expressions of interest for appointment were first invited it has been decided to seek fresh expressions of interest. Those dentists who applied in response to the Memorandum to NHS: 2000 PCA(D)11, who were advised that their name would remain in the pool for future vacancies, and who are still interested in being considered for appointment are asked to submit a further application. 3. The SDPB comprise a part-time Chair, who must be a registered dental practitioner, 4 part-time dental members and 3 part-time lay members. Members are appointed for up to 3 years and attend SDPB meetings between 4 and 6 days per year. Members are paid for attendance at SDPB meetings and are entitled to travel and subsistence at NHS rates. 4. The criteria for membership of the SDPB is attached. 5. Appointments will be made in accordance with the guidelines of the Office of the Commissioner of Public Appointments. Applications 6. To assist with refreshing the pool of dentists suitable for appointment completed application forms should be returned no later than 17 October Dentists who wish to be considered subsequently for membership of the SDPB may complete and submit an application form at any time. 4 Criteria To enable you to assist with the agenda of the SDPB, listed below are the qualities, skills and experience you will need to serve as a dental member. It is important to note that when completing the application form candidates should highlight how their qualities, skills and experience match those required. Essential You must: be a registered dentist; demonstrate that you are fully committed to the NHS by spending at least 75% of your working time in each of the last 3 years as a dentist working within the NHS; provide services of a good professional standard and have your Dental Reference Service reports for the last 3 years taken into account; have a good understanding of the rules and regulations that govern the general dental services; live, or work for most of the time, in Scotland; demonstrate through your application and to be able to present at interview (if selected to attend): an understanding of, and interest in, government health policies, for example healthcare issues; the ability to work as part of a team; leadership and motivation skills; the ability to think and plan ahead; the ability to evaluate complex issues and weigh up conflicting opinions; be committed to considering the patient perspective; be committed to the idea of public service accountability, honesty, openness and equality of treatment and opportunity; be an effective communicator at all levels with good listening and interpersonal skills; be confident and willing to challenge and test proposals on decisions which you will be required to take; be committed to the implementation of procedures to prevent and detect fraud and abuse within the NHS; and have a positive approach to the provision of NHS dentistry. You must not: have been the subject of successful disciplinary or complaints procedures or currently be subject to investigation; have been the subject of action for damages which found against you or been convicted of a criminal offence; have been convicted of fraud or any other financial irregularities; and hold any appointment as an office bearer of a NHS Board, NHS Trust or Special Health Board.
5 Desirable: You might: have experience of serving on an NHS Board or Primary Care NHS Trust committee, eg disciplinary or Area Dental Committee; have management experience in the voluntary, public or private sectors; have experience as a patient; have experience serving in the voluntary sector, particularly in an organisation with links to the health sector; have been active in the local community or served it in local government or some other position; have specialist skills or knowledge relevant to the SDPB.
