1 Subject Outline: Dermatology I Course: Master of Dermatology (Coursework) Subject: Dermatology I (Foundations of Dermatology) Credit Points: 3 Year/Semester Delivered: 1/2 Subject Outline: This subject will provide the student with a foundation for basic dermatology practice. Students will obtain the core knowledge and basic skills required for general medical and procedural dermatology. It is intended for students who have successfully completed the Clinical Sciences I and II subjects and will build on the knowledge acquired to integrate it into basic principles of dermatologic disease. Components of the subject include: 1. Principles of clinical dermatology including a. history taking from a dermatology perspective b. examination and an initial approach to diagnosis covering the morphology and description of skin rashes and lesions. c. Basic principles of dermatologic therapy including topical therapy. 2. Dermoscopy in dermatology, including: a. Contact versus non-contact dermoscopy b. Algorithms used in dermoscopy c. Dermoscopy in pigmented lesions, in particular melanoma 3. An introduction to procedural dermatology including a. Infection control b. use of local anaesthetics c. the role of antibiotics and anticoagulants d. different biopsy techniques. Successful completion of this subject will give the student the core fundamental knowledge and skills for general medical, procedural and therapeutic dermatology. 2 This subject is supported by online content modules: Principles of Dermatology (Skin basics- structure and terminology, History and examination, Overview of dermatologic therapy) Procedural Dermatology (An introduction to procedural dermatology, Local anaesthetic, Biopsy techniques, Choice of Biopsy Method, Antibiotics and Anticoagulants in skin surgery) Dermoscopy (Practical aspects of Dermoscopy, Introduction to Dermoscopy, Two step algorithm, Dermoscopy of melanoma ) Each module contains its own specific learning outcomes, topic content, additional resources, quizzes, and a range of images and case studies. Learning Outcomes: After completing this subject, students will be able to: 1. Establish a safe and appropriate clinical environment 2. Communicate effectively with patients and other stakeholder 3. Develop an effective protocol for generating a relevant history 4. Assess a patient s condition through systematic examination 5. Formulate appropriate diagnosis and differential diagnoses based on a critical assessment of evidenced gather during diagnostic investigations 6. Create and implement an effective treatment management plan 7. Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment plans. Student Workload: The following extract for the ACD Academic Awards Framework Policy should be used as a guide to the minimum time a student should spend working on this subject. A 3 credit point subject will have a minimum of 36 hours teaching time associated with it per semester. 1CP will equate to a minimum of 2.5 hours personal study time per week for the student. Over a semester (20 weeks) this equates to 150 hours of personal study time for a 3 CP subject. 5 Curriculum Mapping: DOMAIN 2: Medical Dermatology Fundamentals of clinical practice in Dermatology The Fundamentals of Clinical Practice in Dermatology constitute key learning outcomes that are applicable to all topic areas in Medical Dermatology. These outcomes are the foundation principles required to effectively evaluate and manage patients. BLO 2: Critically assess patients, generating an accurate history through systematic and comprehensive clinical examination BLO 3: Critically assess and synthesise specialist medical dermatological knowledge of disease process, presentation and epidemiology to develop effective differential diagnoses. BLO 4: Critically analyses appropriate investigations to develop and justify well-reasoned diagnoses. Learning Outcomes LO2: Develop a therapeutic relationship with the patient and carers as appropriate. LO3: Generate a comprehensive relevant history from the patient and carers, as appropriate. LO4: Create an appropriate context for informed consent. LO5: Assess a patient s condition through a systematic and comprehensive patient examination. LO6: Formulate sound clinical decisions and differential diagnoses through the application of dermatological knowledge and skills to both the assessment of a patient s condition and appropriate diagnostic investigations. LO8: Create, implement and evaluate effective treatment management plans, taking into account the patient s condition and context.
