Mention two signals and symptoms of the visual diseases Identify at least two of the chronic illnesses Mention one of the most common test that are used to detect vision lost.

5 Introduction Certain visual illness do not present any symptoms until the illness has progressed 90% of these can be diagnosed and treated at a early stage. According to the Ophthalmology Archives(2004), there is an increase of blindness and the loss of vision in elderly people. According to the National Eye Institute of The United States (US) more than 50% of people that are 80 years old suffer from cataracts.

6 Anatomy of the eye The eye has different parts in charge of different functions. Thanks to these functions your eye can: Control the amount of light that enters your eye Transmit light and focus the light in your eye

7 What is healthy vision? According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the best way to maintain a healthy vision throughout your life is: Maintain a preventive eye care, by performing regular checkups as recommended by your doctor Early detection of any visual condition Getting the right treatment

8 Most common sigh problems Myopia You can see close objects well, but you are having difficulty seeing distant objects Hyperopia You can see distant objects but objects look blurry close to your eyes Astigmatism The eye is not able not focus properly Dry eye The lacrimal glands of the eye do not work properly

9 Diseases witch may affect bvision Cataracts Cloudy areas in the lens of the eye Prevent that light can easily pass trough to the retina, where the image we see is formed Often it presents no symptoms May cause vision loss Treatment One of the treatments for cataracts is surgery

10 Diseases witch may affect vision Glaucoma Pressure of the liquid of the eyes increases slowly and damages the optic nerve. It presents no symptoms at the beginning, an integral exam of the eye can detect it. 11 Diseases witch may affect vision Age-related macular degeneration(amd) Affects the most delicate part of the retina It can affect acute vision, necessary for seeing objects clearly and common chores such as: Driving Reading Treatment: May be treated with laser to reduce risk of mayor vision lost

12 Diseases witch may affect vision Diabetic retinopathy Diabetes related complication Occurs when there is poor circulation in the retina and blood vessels are disrupted, causing inflammation and hemorrhage Treatment: Laser surgery and a treatment called vitrectomy can help treat this condition

16 Signs and symptoms of eye disease If you have any of these symptoms, see your doctor: Difficulty focusing on near or distant objects Sensitivity to bright light Red eyes (with or without secretions) Drooping eyelids or excessive blinking, red edges, runny or swollen A change in color of the iris Loss of eyelashes Persistent pain in or around the eyes

17 Signs and symptoms of eye disease Double vision or collide with objects when walking Dark spots in the center of the viewing area Excessive tearing or watery eyes Dry eyes with itching or burning Seeing unusual points or images Seeing twinkles or rainbows around lights

18 Eye exam as a prevention Complete eye exams performed regularly can help prevent vision loss Early detection and timely treatment of eye diseases can help save your vision and improve the quality of it Frequency of eye exam years old - Every 5 years or as recommended - 40 and older - once a year

19 Eye Exam Dilatation exam Using drops, the doctor dilates or enlarges the pupils Looking through a magnifying glass, examine your retina for signs of damage to the optic nerve (sign of glaucoma) After the exam, your vision may remain blurry for several hours Tonometry You will feel a small puff of air into your eye when applying a pressure sensitive tip near or against the eye To anesthetize the eye, you can apply a few drops By measuring eye pressure, this test helps detect signs of glaucoma
