5 Product data ydro Alication and need Abundant water is the key to rogress and comfort. A booster set should be lanned the right way whether used for water suly, industrial uroses or irrigation. The urose is to otimise oerating costs and achieve a high degree of comfort. The starting oint when lanning a booster set is need. Every suly area has its own consumtion attern. the etrochemical industry the harmaceutical industry. In general, consumtion is characterised by: large variations from minimum load to eak load sudden variations constant ressure. Q The Grundfos ydro booster set can be used for a wide range of alications. A number of tyical examles are shown below. Water suly Access to the right quantity of clean water at the right time is the key to a healthy life. The term water suly covers: waterworks, ressure boosting in distribution circuits blocks of flats, schools, hotels, hositals, etc. Studies of the water consumtion in a tyical waterworks have revealed large differences in the daily water consumtion attern. Consumtion is characterised by: sudden variations between min. and max. consumtion variation taking lace over long eriods constant ressure. Q Fig. 3 Irrigation Tyical industrial consumtion attern In order to maintain recreational areas used for secific uroses, it may be necessary to irrigate. The term irrigation covers: gardening arks sorts grounds, etc. A tyical irrigation system could be used in connection with e.g. a golf course. When the irrigation system is started, consumtion deends on the number of srinklers activated. h TM 9 13 A tyical irrigation system is characterised by: irrigation zones variable, but known consumtion h TM system divided into ressure zones. Q Fig. 2 Tyical consumtion attern in waterworks Industry In a number of rocesses, water lays a vital art. The industrial consumtion attern varies with the tye of industry. Many manufacturing rocesses consist of a cycle requiring an absolute constant ressure even where large and very quick flow variations are concerned. Among others, industrial ressure boosting and liquid transfer comrise: Fig. 4 h Tyical consumtion attern in irrigation alication TM the food industry the textile industry 5

12 Sizing ydro General information When sizing a booster set, it is imortant to ensure that the erformance of the booster set can meet the highest ossible demand both in terms of flow and ressure. that the booster set is not oversized. This is imortant in relation to the installation and oerating costs. If required, the erformance can always be enhanced at a later stage by adding one or more ums connected in arallel. Consumtion attern The consumtion attern can be illustrated in different ways: 24-hour rofile A 24-hour rofile shows the consumtion at different times of the day. Q [ m3 /h ] TM Fig hour rofile Duty-time rofile ased on the 24-hour rofile, a duty-time rofile is worked out. This rofile is used to give an overview of how long the system is oerating at a secific flow. Q [ m3 /h ] TM Fig. 7 Duty-time rofile The examle in fig. 7 shows the following: % of the time: flow 5 m 3 /h 79% of the time: flow > 12 m 3 /h 75% of the time: flow > 28 m 3 /h % of the time: flow > 33 m 3 /h % of the time: flow 38 m 3 /h 12

13 Sizing ydro System selection When sizing, the following should be considered: 1. The consumtion attern to be met by the booster set, including Q [ m3 /h ] how much does the consumtion vary, how suddenly does the consumtion vary. See age The distribution of consumtion over time. See age Fig Consumtion attern TM The tye of booster set to be selected. The selection of tye should be based uon the consumtion attern. The following tyes are available: MS, MS, MF, MF, ME, ME, MES. See age 14. Q [ m3 /h ] The system size to be selected (um erformance and number of ums). The selection of system size should be based uon the consumtion attern, considering the following asects: TM efficiency, Fig. 9 Duty-time rofile NPS value, are standby ums required? 14 Sizing ydro Tye of booster set The booster set tye should be selected on the basis of the consumtion attern, i.e. the 24-hour and duty-time rofiles. If the consumtion is highly variable and otimum comfort is required, ums with continuously variable seed control should be used. Examles of different consumtion atterns and their 24-hour and duty-time rofiles: Water suly Industry Irrigation Q Q Q 24-hour rofile h TM h TM 9 13 h TM Flow: igh degree of variation. Continuously variable seed control of the ums is recommended. TM Systems using half-size ums should not be used if the variation in consumtion over a very short time is higher than the erformance of one full-size um. 15 Sizing ydro System size Pum size As mentioned before, the system should be caable of meeting the highest ossible demand. ut as the highest demand will often occur for a comaratively short art of the duty eriod only, it is imortant to select a tye of um which can meet the varying demand throughout the duty eriod. It is not recommended to select a um tye whose erformance is lower than the lowest ossible consumtion. Nor is it recommended to select a um tye whose erformance is higher than the highest ossible consumtion. Efficiency In order to achieve the otimum oerating economy, attemts should be made to select the ums on the basis of otimum efficiency, i.e. the ums should, as far as ossible, oerate within their nominal oerating ranges. As the system is always sized on the basis of the highest ossible consumtion, meaning that it will always be regulated down, it is imortant always to have the duty oint of the ums to the right on the efficiency curve (see the um erformance curve), in order to kee efficiency high when consumtion dros. Eta Fig. 13 Pum efficiency curve Q [ m3 /h ] The otimum efficiency is ensured by selecting a duty oint within the hatched area. TM NPS In order to avoid cavitation, never select a um whose duty oint lies too far to the right on the NPS curve. Always check the NPS values of the ums at the highest ossible consumtion (see the um erformance curve). NPS Fig. 15 NPS curve Standby um To most customers reliable sulies are a major factor. Often it is not accetable if the system does not maintain its maximum flow even during um reairs or breakdown. In order to revent any disrution of the suly in such a situation, the system may be sized with a standby um. Fig. 16 System with standby um If it is accetable that the system does not roduce the required ressure but an unchanged flow during um reair and breakdown, a standby um may, in certain circumstances, not be required. 16 Sizing ydro Diahragm tank The need for a diahragm tank should be estimated on the basis of the following general guidelines: All ydro systems installed inside buildings must be equied with a diahragm tank due to the auto-sto function. ydro systems used in water suly alications do not have to be equied with a diahragm tank as miles of PVC iing artly hold the necessary caacity, artly have the elasticity to give sufficient caacity. The need for a diahragm tank for ydro systems used in industrial alications should be estimated from situation to situation on the basis of the individual factors on site. Full-size um tye The size of the obligatory diahragm tank can also be calculated from the following formula: Dry-running rotection To rotect the booster set against dry running, dryrunning rotection is obligatory. The actual inlet conditions determine the tye of dry-running rotection to be used. If the system draws from a tank, dry-running rotection should be in the form of a level switch or electrode relay. If the system has an inlet ressure, a ressure transmitter should be used to rotect against dry running. Friction-loss comensation Friction-loss comensation often imroves the economy of the system. The system characteristic determines whether friction-loss comensation can be used or not. TM Friction-loss comensation can be used. Q Q TM Friction-loss comensation cannot be used. 16

18 Sizing ydro Understanding the curve charts The curves should be read as follows: The x-axis, giving the flow (Q) in m 3 /h, is common to all the curves, whereas the y-axis, giving the head () in m, has been adated to the individual um tye. When oerating systems with half-size ums, the erformance of one half-size um is illustrated in the curve chart as a thin curve. The half-size um tye can be read in the lower left corner. 9 9 ydro CR 1-9 MS-MS z ISO 996 Annex A CR 5-14 This axis (y-axis) is adated to the individual um tye CR 1-6 MS-MS Secification of full-size um tye and system tye CR 5-1 Secification of half-size um tye CR 1-4 MS-MS 1 CR 5-8 This axis (x-axis) is common to all um tyes. 19 Sizing ydro Examle: ow to select a system A head of 45 m is required. The um tye best meeting this secification is found by means of the y-axis, e.g. CR 1-6. Draw a rightward, horizontal line from the head required. A flow of 18 m 3 /h is required. Now draw an uward, vertical line from the secified flow. The intersection of the two lines gives the number of ums required for the system (2 CR 1-6). Only systems whose oerating ranges lie within the hatched area of the examle should be selected. 9 9 ydro CR 1-9 MS-MS z ISO 996 Annex A CR 5-14 CR 1-6 MS-MS CR 5-1 CR 1-4 MS-MS 1 CR 5-8 CR 1-3 MS-MS 1 CR Q [m³/h] Q [l/s] TM

98 Technical data ydro Dimensions and weights The revious ages state dimensions and weights for ydro. Please note that the dimensions stated may vary by ±1 mm and that all systems are sulied without vibration damers. All systems have the control cabinet mounted to the right of the ums on a common base frame. owever, there are certain excetions: Systems marked have the control cabinet centred on the base frame. Systems marked are sulied with the control cabinet mounted on a searate base frame. Systems marked are sulied without a searate base frame for the control cabinet. The control cabinet is mounted on its own base. The weights stated for these systems do not include the control cabinet. Construction ydro is built u on a common stainless-steel base frame (EN/DIN 1.41). The ums are fixed to the base frame by means of bolts. The control cabinet is fixed to the base frame by means of a stainless-steel stand (EN/DIN 1.41). A suction manifold of stainless steel (EN/DIN 1.41 or EN/DIN ) is mounted on the suction side of the ums. An isolating valve and a non-return valve are mounted between the suction manifold and the individual ums. The non-return valve may be mounted on the discharge side on request. A discharge manifold of stainless steel (EN/DIN 1.41 or EN/DIN ) is mounted on the discharge side of the ums. An isolating valve is mounted between the discharge manifold and the individual ums. The Control control cabinet is fitted with all necessary comonents. All ydro F control cabinets are fitted with a fan to remove surlus heat generated by the frequency converter. Oerating conditions iquid temerature: C to + C. Ambient temerature: C to + C. Oerating ressure: The oerating ressure deends on the ressure transmitter, but maximum is 16 bar. The maximum oerating ressure may also be limited by the diahragm tank installed. Installation A ydro booster set must be installed in a well ventilated room to ensure sufficient cooling of ums and control cabinet. The booster set should be laced with a 1-metre clearance in front and on the two sides. Mechanical installation The ies connected to the booster set must be of adequate size. To avoid resonance, exansion joints should be fitted in the suction and discharge ies. The ies are to be connected to the manifolds of the booster set. Either end can be used. It is advisable to fit ie hangers both on the suction and discharge sides. The booster set should be ositioned on an even and solid surface, e.g. a concrete floor or foundation. If the booster set is not fitted with vibration damers, it must be bolted to the floor or foundation. 2 Fig. 18 Mechanical installation TM Exansion joints. 2. Pie hangers. Electrical connection z standard voltage: 3 x V -1%/+6%, N, PE. Starting method: 3 kw direct-on-line starting 4 kw Y/. Note: For single-hase MGE motors 1.1 kw, the mains neutral lead must be sized in relation to the full-load current in the neutral lead. 98
