2 Hydra-Help Diabetes is a world wide public health issue for which there is currently no cure, the condition requires life long management. The most common form of diabetes is type 2. These diabetes sufferers manage their disease through medication, diet and exercise. A great concern for all diabetics is their blood sugar levels, these levels must be within a safe range to ensure bodily health. Blood sugar levels are infl uenced by food choices, alcohol, illnesses, stress, exercise and hydration. To ensure they are healthy diabetes sufferers are best off managing all of these factors to ensure a healthy happy lifestyle. Hydration is an overlooked factor when it comes to addressing sing blood sugar levels as it is assumed sufferers can just drink more water. This is untrue as many sufferers aren t aware of the signs of dehydration and simply confuse the effects on their body as exhaustion and do not consider that dehydration is infl uencing their blood sugar levels and wellbeing. Dehydration can heavily infl uence blood sugar levels if the user is not within safe blood sugar levels (Diabetes Co Uk, 2014), because of this a solution is needed to manage hydration for diabetes sufferers. The Hydra-Help aims to assist this issue, it is an hydration management drink bottle for type 2 diabetes sufferers to assist them with identifying when their sugar levels and hydration are not within safe levels. It achieves this by using a sweat glucose and hydration sensor embedded within the bottle to quickly and effectively test the users sweat hydration and glucose levels. The results are then quickly refl ected within the bottle lit up by an LED in green, yellow or red to signify whether the user is within healthy levels, at risk, or if the user should consult the Bluetooth linked app to see what they should do next to ensure they return to healthy levels. The Hydra-Help is intended to be a part of the user s daily life. While available for any and all to use this product is targeted at year old self aware type 2 diabetics. These users have busy lives revolving around full time employment and family management. This leaves little spare time to critically manage other infl uences on their blood sugar levels. By creating a solution that has simple, enjoyable tangible interactions as a way of the user to quickly gauge their hydration and glucose levels it is expected that the users will continue to enjoy the proposed solution. 4 Description The Hydra-Help has many features to assist with and manage the user s hydration and glucose levels. The most important feature is the sweat glucose and sweat hydration sensor. This is an existing technology (Yang, 2016) embedded within the stylish sensor that senses skin temperature, glucose, lactate, sodium and potassium within the user s sweat. This is then analysed quickly and relayed to both the internal LED and in more detail within the linked application. The application developed as a partner to the Hydra-Help conveys critical information and results from the sensor. It is linked to the bottle and can track sweat hydration levels and sweat glucose levels results. This helps the user understand and see problem areas within their days to help identify where they can improve. The app also tracks water intake as it is linked to a Bluetooth water intake tracker (Out Of Galaxy, 2016). This shows the user how much water they have consumed throughout the day as well as having the user set hydration goals with the app indicating how close they are. Tracking water intake over days gives the user opportunities to improve problem days to enhance their health and wellbeing. The Hydra-Help features 3 simple enjoyable interactions. The fi rst interaction is to activate the sensors. Following user testing it became apparent that the sensors needed to be near the base of the bottle; however, having the sensors always activated proved to be an annoyance on the user when simply picking up the bottle for transport. Because of this, much like wiping a dehydrated forehead the user slowly pass their hands over the proximity sensors embedded on the external rim. This wipe is instantly met with light feedback and a light beep when the sensors are ready to begin testing. The second interaction is to hold the sensors. The user holds their grip around the bottle with their palm on the sensors. The user is immediately met with sound feedback as the test begins. When the test is complete (2-3 seconds) the bottle is illuminated by the internal LED with a simplifi ed test result of green, yellow or red. The third and fi nal tangible interaction is to squeeze the two battery buttons in. This squeeze is immediately met with vibration feedback before displaying the battery status by illuminating the bottle with a simple green, yellow or red light signifying the battery level is high, medium, or low. 5 Description The Hydra-Help also features wireless charging to quickly charge the battery without plugging the bottle in, a silicon sleeve to ensure bottle durability and negate the risk of glass shattering. It is available in a multitude of colour combinations and has an internal capacity of 900mls of liquid. This seems like an odd amount but it was the maximum amount possible with the constraints of creating a well designed, usable drink bottle that does not negate human factors and user needs. This is a relatively high capacity for a drink bottle but the design intention is that this bottle is used throughout the user s day, work, home, car, and simply walking the dogs are where this bottle is envisioned. As the Hydra-Help is a passive object situated within the user s lifestyle there is a high chance it spends most of its time within the user s space, but not within the user s hands. Because of this the user can simply forget to test hydration and sweat glucose levels and therefore forget to manage their hydration. To combat this the Hydra-Help has an ambient light subtly fl ashing after 15 minutes of inactivity. This is non intrusive and simply reminds the user it is time to take a drink to ensure they stay hydrated. If the Hydra-Help is within the users view they can easily see that it is time to drink to stay within their hydration goals. After 45 minutes the Hydra-Help begins to vibrate as it is time for the user to take a drink to ensure they stay hydrated. ID6 N

6 Design Justification The aim for this project is: To design an improved interactive portable device to assist diabetes sufferers in managing and tracking their hydration and blood glucose levels while boosting user experience through enjoyable tangible interactions The aim has been achieved with the Hydra-Help through its enjoyable simple tangible interactions keeping the user connected with their current hydration and sweat glucose levels. The bottle is larger than a typical water bottle. It has undertaken many sizes through in person and on paper usability examinations. It is the maximum size for the bottle to be usable by the 5th percentile females, while still being usable for the 95th percentile males. The sensor placement ensures all people can easily place their palms over the sensors when interacting with the product. The size was commented on within the design presentation as the bottle s carrying capacity is 900ml. As previously mentioned this was the maximum possible size while still keeping the bottle completely usable. The Hydra-Help is a lifestyle companion and therefore it is important it can carry the most possible liquid to keep the user hydrated when they re out and about. The material selection is suited to the target user group. While it appears to be upmarket design each material was chosen carefully. The decision to utilise a glass bottle casing instead of a plastic one was made after research into the long term usability of plastic. A plastic bottle would need replacement after 5 years. This does not suit the intentions of the product or the user and therefore glass was chosen. The secondary reason was due to the target group. Glass has a higher perceived value than plastic, as well as a broader range of cleaning and sterilising options. The Hydra-Help is a part of the user lifestyle to boost their health and wellbeing. The device needs to fi t in and look the part, it should therefore have a high perceived value. High Density Poly Ethylene was chosen for the majority of the custom parts as it fi ts the hardness, durability and manufacture needs as well as being recyclable. This is the same reason silicon was chosen as the material for the sleeve. The sleeve also needs a particular amount of elasticity as it secondarily acts as a barrier to the glass in the case of the bottle being dropped. Shatterproof glass was investigated in the event of dropping but was elected against due to its high cost and the effects its implementation would have on the design. The high density poly-theylene provides protection to the most vulnerable edges of the glass as part of the design. The application design is kept simple to use to ensure any users can navigate the internal menus and modify their goals. This helps engage not only the target user group but any other potential users that are not as knowledgeable with technology. Goal 14/ - 20/ You have high sweat glucose levels. The standards that do apply are: ISO 9008:1991 : Glass bottles - Verticality - Test method BS 7367:1991 : Specification for manufacture of glass bottles for carbonated soft drinks including carbonated water AS/NZS 4020:2005 : Testing of products for use in contact with drinking water ASTM D2911/D2911M-16 : Standard Specification for Dimensions and Tolerances for Plastic Bottles The Total cost of manufacture for this unit is $486,490 in a run of 000 units, placing the individual unit cost at $ This is quite a high cost but it is understandable due to the large amount of custom components, the features and the material choice. The decision to use recyclable HDPE, silicon and a glass enclosure in the bottle have driven the price up. The design is to fit the target user who is capable of purchasing this product as a life companion and therefore it needs to have high value materials that are long lasting and recyclable. ID6 N
