Blood Pressure s Effect on YOU: What nobody ever tells you about high blood pressure There is more to the story than risk of heart attack & stroke Brain Kidney Eye Nerves Heart Failure Blood Vessel Damage
The Cardiovascular Connection Blood vessel lining damage Thickening of heart walls Heart Failure Heart attack Atypical & Prodromal symptoms
Blood Vessel Damage

The Brain Connection: Stroke is a Brain Attack
More Brain Connections Increased risk of dementia & nerve damage Vascular dementia is the second most common form of dementia, 40 percent of dementia cases in older adults. Vascular dementia is caused by reduced blood flow to the brain usually from a stroke or series of strokes. While the strokes may be unnoticeably small, the damage can add up over time, leading to memory loss, confusion, and other signs of dementia. Vascular dementia: a subtle, progressive decline in memory and cognitive functioning. Blood supply carrying oxygen and nutrients to the brain is interrupted by a blocked or diseased vascular system. Blocked blood supply for longer than a few seconds can cause brain cells death and damage to the cortex of the brain the area associated with learning, memory, and language.
The Kidney Connection High blood pressure can damage blood vessels in the kidneys by stretching vessels so blood flows more easily. Stretching scars and weakens blood vessels If the kidneys blood vessels are damaged, they may stop removing wastes and extra fluid from the body. Extra fluid in the blood vessels may then raise blood pressure even more, creating a dangerous cycle. High blood pressure is the second leading cause of kidney failure in the United States after diabetes and has increased 7.7 percent from 2000 to 2010.
The Eye & Nerve Connection Hypertensive retinopathy is damage to the retina from high blood pressure. (The retina is the layer of tissue at the back part of the eye. It changes light and images that enter the eye into nerve signals that are sent to the brain.) High blood pressure can damage blood vessels in the retina. The higher the blood pressure and the longer it has been high, the more severe the damage is likely to be. Diabetes, high cholesterol levels & smoking, increase the risk of damage and vision loss.
